CANDLE HOLDER FOR BIRTHDAY CAKES Filed Nov. 25, 1955 I N V EN TOR. ac/L e Ei SCA/5R51?,
5f/mm United States Patent C) CANDLE HOLDER FOR BIRTHDAY CAKES Lucille E. Scherer, Gardena, Cali Application November 25, 1955, Serial No. 548,905
6 Claims. (Cl. 67-25) My invention relates to holders for the candles usually used to decorate birthday and similar decorated cakes.
Such cakes are nearly always designed to be particulary decorative, having congratulatory messages in colored icings, graceful designs of flowers, and the like, together with ruching. or continuous garlands around the peripheral edge of the cake. When candle holders of the types heretofore known, which support a candle on a spike, are used it is often diflicult to arrange them symmetrically without damage to the decorations and Without obscuring the latter, and it is also often most difficult to position the desired number of candles on the cake without a resulting conglomeration of congested candles and holders therefor being displayed.
In general, most birthday and anniversary cakes are provided around their peripheral edges with a raised decorative border of icing, whipped cream, and the like, as Well as the usual decorative designs and message displayed on the top surface of the cake; and it is the general object of my invention to provide a novel decorative holder for candles to be used in further decorating such a cake, and which holder may be firmly and securely embedded in the cake proper without likelihood of it becoming dislodged or displaced after placement on the cake, and also without contact with or damage to the decorations on the cake border; and also whereby an increased number of candles may be deeoratively sup- Y ported on the cake in such manner that the decorations and message on the cake top will not be obscured.
It is an object of my invention to provide a novel decorative candle holder yfor birthday cakes, and the like, by the use of which numerous candles may be sup-` .I
candle holder of the above character, and by means ofV which a large numbern of candles may be artistically mounted on a cake with a minimum area of the cake obscured by supporting members of the holders.
A further object of my invention is to provide `a` novel decorative holder for candles, and by which two or more candles may be supported adjacent the edge of a cake, one candle holding socket being arranged on a portion of the supporting member depending over the side of the cake while other candle holding socket means are arranged on the supporting member above the surface of the cake, or layer thereof.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a novel decorative candle holder for birthday cakes, and the like, whereby a plurality of candle receiving sockets are supported at dierent levels with respect to one another on a single support that is adapted to be pushed into and embedded in the cake to be decorated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel decorative candle holder for birthday cakes, and the like, and in which a single support with a curved portion is rice provided that is adapted to extend over the edge of a cake and any ruching extending around the peripheral edge of the cake, without marring said ruching, said curved portion being continued downwardly to support a candle socket adjacent the side of the cake, another portion of said supporting meansserving to mount additional socket means.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detail description, and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention in some of the forms I at present deem preferable.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a portion of an ornamented cake arranged in three tiers, and showing the various forms of the novel candle holders of my invention associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, on enlarged scale, of one form of a novel candle holder constructed in accordance with my invention inserted into the edge of a plain frosted cake, the latter being shown in section; and a portion of the candle holding socket being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of another form of a novel candle holder constructed in accordance with my invention, and arranged to hold two candles on a single supporting member; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a modification of my invention arranged to mount a single candle and provided With a supporting member adapted to be pushed into the side walls of a cake.
Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates generally a typical embodiment of my invention which includes an elongate curved supporting member 11 having a pointed end portion 12 and an arcuate or curved portion 13 intermediateits length, a portion 14 extending generally similarly to the portion 11 and a candle holding or mounting portion 15. The socket supporting portion 15 is preferably wound in a spiral for decorative effect as shown inthe drawing but obviously other forms of a decorative nature may be given to the socket supporting end 15.
The sockets 16 may be of any preferred form as shown by way of example, as being of small cylindrical blocks bored as at 20 to receive the end of birthday candles and secured to the Asupporting member in anysuitable way.
It will be noted that by mounting one socket 16 'on the high point of the curved portion 13 of the .supporting member 11, and another socket 16 on the spiral end 15 which is at a lower level than portion 13, two candles may be mounted on a single supporting member 11 and give a very pleasing appearance to the cake. l
The curved portion 13 is primarily provided to enable the supporting member 11 to extend over the ruching or decoration 17 `usually placed` around the peripheral edge of a birthday cake A and depend down `the side of the cake without marring the ruching and supporting the downwardly extending portion 14 of the supporting member clear of the side of the cake which is usually covered with icing, and the curved supporting member 11 tends to bind the holder in mounted position on the cake A.
In the form of the candle holder shown in Fig. 2, the left hand portion 15a of the candle holder 10 is similar to that of the candle holder shown in Fig. 3 but an additional branch 18 is provided and connected in any suitable manner to supporting member 11a to extend to the side opposite to portion 15a, and may end in a similar spiral 15' on which a socket 16a is mounted at a higher level than the adjacent socket.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the candle holder 10", has its socket 16b mounted on al spiral ,mounting portion 15bof similar formto `those shown in Figs. 2 and 3 but a supporting member 11b is provided which extends laterally of, and angularly to, themounting portion 15b to enable the candle holder .10""to-'be inserted inthe side wallsof a cake,as shown fat vthe -top in Figure 1.
The artistic and-decorative effect which is achieved -by the candle holders of my; invention isv clearly shown .in Figfl. -It` will beseen that the triple candle holder shown in Fig. 2 may be used on theedge of the bottom tier 2S 'of a three tierv cake, the double candle holder shownv in-Fig. 3 may be -used -around the --edge of the second tier 26, andthe single candle holder shown in Pig. `4 may be used around the sides of -the top layer 27 of the cake. While candles 19 of the same heighth are. shown in allforms ofthe candle' holder obviously candles of variousl heights may be used to give different etfects. The candles 19am-received in recesses 2) in the respective sockets 16,16a and 1611.
kThe candle holder of my invention may -be made of any suitable material as for-instance of ymetal wire with separate receptacles to hold the base of the candles secured to the wire in any suitable manner, or thewhole device mayv preferably be formed of plastic molded into the desired conguration.
From-the foregoing, it will :be seen that in the preferred form and embodiments of my invention as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, that- I have provided a candle holder having an elongate supporting member that is bent intermediate its ends intoasubstantially inverted U-shape form, one leg 11 of which is curved inwardly toward the other leg-14 thereof so as to form a more or less hook-end to be inserted in the cake, `to thereby aid in maintaining the candle holder 10 in proper mounted position on the -cake A, and the arcuate or curved portion or Vbase-13 ofV said inverted U-shaped supporting member is adapted tok receive, embrace or straddle the decorations 17I aroundthe border or peripheral edge of the cake without contact therewith, or damage thereto.
The candle holders 10, 10 and 10 may be placed in staggered arrangement around the periphery of various tiersor layers 25, 26 and 27 of cake A to enhance the decorative effect of combining my novel candle holders with birthday cakes, and the like.
While certain specific embodiments of my invention have been hereinndescribed and shown in the drawing, it will be obvious that various modifications may be made by those skilled in the art-without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appende claims.
I claim:
