2 Claims. (Cl. -335) The present invention relates to bed covers of the type having a pocket at the foot end adapted to receive a mattress end whereby the cover is held in place on the mattress. It is especially useful in top covers and is well adapted for use in blankets such as electrically heated blankets.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved pocket structure for a bed cover which is so shaped and arranged that when fitted on an unoccupied bed mattress it provides smooth even rear corners so as not to detract from the neat appearance of a made bed but which when the bed is occupied provides ample space or kick room between the cover and the mattress at the foot of the bed.
For a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and to the claim appended thereto.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the foot end of a bed cover having a mattress receiving pocket embodying the invention, the cover being shown fitted on a mattress. 7
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the foot end of a blank from which a cover embodying the invention may be formed.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the foot end of Fig. 1.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary side views of the foot end of a mattress fitted with the cover, illustrating its use, the cover being shown in section; Fig. 5 being taken on line 55, Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 being taken on line 6--6, Pig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 6 indicates the top portion of the cover, 7 the side flaps and 8 the foot end flap. Top portion 6 is of a size approximately equal to the size of the top portion of the mattress M with which the cover is intended to be used, side flaps 7 are of a width somewhat greater than the thickness of such mattress and end flap 8 is of a width not only greater than the thickness of such mattress but also greater than the width of the side flaps. Integral with the bottom edge of end flap 8 is a bottom strip 9 which extends across the bottom of the mattress and fits snugly up against it. Bottom strip 9 is shorter in length than the width of the mattress by an amount substantially equal to twice the amount which the side flaps exceed the thickness of the mattress, and at its ends is attached to the bottom edges of side flaps 7 at points spaced forwardly somewhat from their end edges as is indicated at 19. The end edges of end flap 8 are attached to the adjacent end edges of side flaps 7 as indicated at 11 and to the adjacent bottom edges of side flaps '7 as is indicated at 12, thus forming a pocket the bottom edge of which is defined by strip 9.
Fig. 2 shows the foot end of a blank from which a pocket as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5 may be formed. The end edges 13 of side flaps 7 are substantially straight and extend at right angles to the side edges 14 of top 6; and the initial portions 15 of the side edges of end flap 3 are also substantially straight, although preferably nited States Patent 2,788,532 Patented .Apr. :16, .3195? and blend into the ends of strip 9. In constructingcthe pocket, edge portions'15- and Bare sewed togetherand edge portions. 17 and the endsof strip9 are. sewed to the adjacent bottom :edgesof sideifiaps 7. Theasewingdogether of substantially; straight rightcangular .edges .13
and 15 provides straight corners 11 which will fit snugly and evenly around the mattress corners; the sewing together of edges 17 and the adjacent bottom edges of side flaps 7 provides a pocket portion adapted to extend rather loosely under a mattress, and the sewing of the ends of strip 9 to the bottom edges of side flaps 7 provides a portion 18 of the side flaps which is pulled by the strip 9 under the mattress as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, the strip fitting up snugly against the bottom of the mattress as well shown in Fig. 1. To effect this result strip 9 is shorter than the width of the mattress by about twice the amount which the width of the side flaps exceeds the thickness of the mattress.
End flap 8 by reason of its being wider than side flaps 7 and all the flaps being wider than the thickness of the mattress provides a pocket which is greater in depth than the thickness of the mattress so that when the cover is laid smoothly on top of a mattress with the end of the mattress in the pocket, the cover may be smoothed down and adjusted to give square even corners, the extra length being tucked under the mattress between it and a support S as is shown in 4. This is also shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This extra width, when the bed is occupied, enables the foot end of the top portion 6 to be lifted as indicated at 20 in Figs. 5 and 6 to provide foot or kick room under the cover at the foot of the bed. When the cover is raised at the foot of the bed, the bottom edge of the pocket will be pulled and stretched to a position as indicated by the dotted line 21 in Fig. 1, it being pulled from under the mattress more at the center of the mattress than at the sides. This is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, Fig. 5 being a section at the center of the mattress and Fig. 6 being a section at the side after the cover has been pulled upward at the foot of the bed to provide kick room.
In addition to providing a cover having a pocket which when fitted over the foot end of a mattress provides smooth even rear corners and even draping of the side and end flaps down the sides and end of the mattress, and kick room for when the bed is occupied, the arrangement, because of the shapes of the blanket corners, provides corner edges which can be advantageously sewed together on high speed sewing machines.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. For use with a mattress of a given size, a bed cover having a top portion corresponding in size to the top of the mattress, side flaps of a width greater than that of the mattress thickness for hanging down along the side edges of the mattress, an end flap for hanging down along the foot end of the mattress, and a flexible bottom strip for fitting under the foot end of the mattress, said end flap extending beyond the foot end of said mattress a distance greater than the width of said side flaps, and said bottom strip being of less transverse length than the width of the mattress by an amount substantially equal to twice the amount which each of the side flaps exceeds the thickness of the mattress, the end edges of said side flaps being attached to the adjacent edge portions of said end flap to provide square corners which extend at substantially right angles to said top portion when the cover is fitted on the mattress, and the remaining edge portions of said end flap and the ends of said strip being attached to the adjacent bottom edges of respective side flaps to definea pocket for the reception of the mattress end, said strip by reason of its length being less than the mattress 'width serving to hold theside flap portions to which it is adjacent bottom edges of said side flaps said edges of said flaps are caused to be positioned alongthe bottom of the mattress inwardly of the edges thereof.
