1 Claim. (CI. 20-64) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in threshold or sill constructions for doors designed to save labor and to facilitate installation of outside door jambs in building construction.

An important object of the invention is to construct a threshold or door sill which is strong and durable, easily and quickly installed in a door jamb, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.

These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view; and

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the threshold or sill.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a main threshold or door sill generally and which may be constructed of metal, plastic or other suitable material and including a rear horizontal, door-underlying plate 6 and a front downwardly sloping plate 7.

The underside of rear plate 6 is formed with a rib or tongue 8 adjacent and parallel to its rear edge and a shoulder 9 is formed at the underside of the threshold at the junction of the plates 6 and 7 and parallel to rib 8.

Rear plate 6 rests on top of a flooring or furring strip 10 to underlie a door 11, when the latter is closed and with the ends of the threshold or sill closely fitted between the sides of the door jamb 12. The rear upper corner of flooring or furring strip 10 is rabbetted or formed with a longitudinal groove 13 to receive and lock the rib 8 therein and shoulder 9 abuts the front edge of the flooring or furring strip to hold the threshold or sill from sliding or working inwardly or outwardly.

Patented Apr. 16, 1957 The sub-flooring 14 projects outwardly beyond the flooring or furring strip 10 to underlie front plate 7 and the underside of the front plate is formed with a pedestal 15 which may extend either continuously from end to end of the threshold or sill, or may be interrupted, if desired, and which rests on top of the sub-flooring. The front portion of front plate 7 is increased in thickness to also rest on the sub-flooring and provides an attaching plate 16 having openings 17 to receive screws 18 for securing the front plate to the sub-flooring.

The attaching plate 16 projects forwardly beyond the sub-flooring to form an overhang 19 and which may be supported by brackets 20. A downwardly projecting drip flange 21 is formed at the front underside portion of the overhang 19.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

The combination with a main floor having a sub-floor projecting beyond the main floor, the said main floor extending to a position underlying a closed door, of a metal door sill having a rear horizontal plate resting on the main floor and underlying a closed door, said horizontal plate formed on its inner surface with a shoulder abutting the front edge of the main floor, and with an elongated rib spaced inwardly from the outer edge of said plate, the said main floor formed with a groove to receive said rib, and whereby said horizontal plate is prevented from transverse shifting movement due to said shoulder and said rib engagement with said main floor, a front downwardly sloping plate extending from said horizontal plate and overlying the sub-floor, an elongated pedestal carried on the bottom surface of the front plate and resting on the said sub-floor, and an attaching plate forming an extension of the front plate and formed to rest on and be secured to the sub-floor.
