Be it known that 1, CHARLES ERLANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stays for Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in stays for garments, and the object thereof is to provide a cheap and strong stay for garments where they are subjected to the greatest strain.

To the accomplishment of this purpose my invention consists in placing in proper position intermediately between the outer and inner layers of fabric of which the garment is formed a supplementary stay-piece folded so as to form a corded edge, that will extend across the fork or crotch of a garment, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts on each'figure, Figure 1 represents part of the front of a pair of drawers provided with my invention. I shall confine my description to the application of my invention to a pair of drawers; but in so doing do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to such garments, as it is my intention to utilize it on shirts, overalls, pantaloons, and other garments, both at the forks and crotches, as well as at the pockets or plackets, and at all other portions thereof where stay-pieces are required.

The gist of my invention consists in insert- 5 at the fork or crotch of the fly, at the opening of the waistband, at the pocket or placket, or other portion where a stay-piece is required on a garment, a supplementary stay-piece, O, the upper edge of which is corded, as plainly shown in the drawings. Said cord maybe separately inserted, asshown at a, Fig. 3, and the fabric of the stay folded thereover and then stitched down to form a welt, as will be readily understood; or it will be entirely within the scope of my invention to dispense with the supplementary cord 0, and by doubling or returning the stay upon itself form a welt integral therewith, the main purpose and object of my invention being to provide at the fork or other part of the garment a stay having a welted edge where said stay bridges the opening of a garment. To further strengthen the stay-piece C it is preferably provided with wings or extensions 0 (shown in Fig. l) as projecting downwardly; but they may project upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. Said extensions will lie flat between the layers of fabric, and, being firmly stitchedthereto, will form additional resistance when the upper welted portion is subjected to strain.

I am aware that crotches of drawers and overalls have been re-enforced by pieces of textile fabric sewed in place, and such I do not claim.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim is A stay for garments, consisting of a main portion, 0, a corded or welted edge, 0, and side wings or extensions, a, substantially as described.
