BOTTLE STOPPERS Filed Nov. 12, 1953 HVVENTOR.. BALDOMERO R/A CORTAT nited. States This invention relates to bottle or the like stoppers.
The invention has for an object the provision of a bottle or the like stopper with manually operated means for extracting the stopper which does not require the use of any extraneous tool of any kind, such as a corkscrew.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a stopper which is effective in use and simple to manufacture and which can be extracted from a bottle or the like by a simple twisting or turning movement.
To this end, the present invention consists in an extracting device for a bottle or the like stopper of substantially cylindrical shape, which comprises an internally threaded ring having an internal diameter equal to that of the stopper and adapted to be screwed onto the stopper before the latter is inserted into the mouth of said bottle and to bear against the edge of the bottle mouth, the arrangement being such that by turning said ring in a direction against the bottle mouth causes the stopper to be extracted from the bottle.
The invention also consists in a bottle or the like stopper, which comprises an internally threaded ring having an internal diameter equal to that of the stopper and adapted to be screwed onto the stopper before the latter is inserted into the mouth of said bottle and to bear against the edge of the bottle mouth, the arrangement being such that by turning said ring in a direction against the bottle mouth causes the stopper to be extracted from the bottle.
Preferably, the outer surface of the ring is roughened, for example, milled, to present a non-slip surface and thus facilitate turning of the ring.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate diagrammatcally and by way of example, one embodiment of stopper in accordance therewith, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the stopper inserted into the mouth of a bottle;
Fig. 2 is a median longitudinal section thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 showing the stopper partially extracted from the bottle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a ring of metal, plastic or any other suitable material having an internal diameter equal to that of a substantially cylindrical atent stopper 2 of cork or other suitable deformable material. The external surface of the ring 1 is provided with milling 3 or is otherwise roughened to present a non-slip surface to the fingers of the user, whilst the inner surface is screw threaded at 4. The stopper 2 is of such a diameter as to be a very tight fit in the mouth 6 of the bottle thereby to seal the contents.
When the ring 1 has been placed in position and screwed up to the tip of the stopper 2, the latter is introduced into the mouth 6 in the usual way, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, the stopper 2 is provided with a cap 5.
In order now to extract the stopper, the ring 1 is turned thus screwing it in a direction towards the bottle and the pressure which it applies to the rim of the bottle mouth 6 causes the stopper to be withdrawn from the mouth 6 until its lower edge is level with the base of the ring 1.
In this way, the construction according to the invention avoids the difiiculties of extraction by known means, such as corkscrews, which in the majority of cases destroy the stopper or at least often cause particles of cork to fall into the contents of the bottle.
I claim:
A bottle closure arrangement comprising, in combination, a substantially cylindrical stopper consisting of a deformable material having properties similar to cork and having an unthreaded main portion and an end portion of equal diameter, said main portion of said stopper being adapted to be frictionally held in the neck of the bottle with said end portion of said stopper projecting from the bottle neck; and an open-ended annular threaded extracting member having a rough grippable outer surface and having an inner thread of a constant diameter provided with a root diameter equal to said first-mentioned diameter, said annular member being threaded upon said end portion of said stopper and adapted to abut against the neck of the bottle, so that turning of said annular threaded member results in the formation of thread on said stopper by said annular threaded member, abutment of said annular threaded member during such thread formation against the neck of the bottle and consequent movement of said stopper in axial direction through said annular member, whereby said stopper is extracted from said bottle neck.
