1 Claim. (CI. 24-84) The present invention relates to conveniences for facilitating the recording of golf scores. The customary practice is for each player to carry his own pencil and score card. Distraction, delays and inconvenience are occasioned when either item is misplaced.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a unitary device for holding a pencil and golf score card in secure relationship on a golf club bag, so that the score card and pencil are readily available, secured in one place when not in use, and transported with the bag.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device in the form of a simple, one-piece, easliy manufactured construction, having no moving parts, so that it may be marketed in quantity as a novelty or advertising promotion item.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which presents a minimum of discontinuities, so that it may readily be produced by casting or molding.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying description of the appended drawing in which there is shown a preferred form of secured holder in accordance with the invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevational sectional view showing the holder secured in place at the top edge of a golf club bag, and
Fig. 2' is a side elevational View of the holder per 'se.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral designates the top edge of a conventional golf club bag. In accordance with one aspect of .the invention, a golf score card 18 and pencil 14 are secured in place and at the same time rendered readily. available by my novel holder 11.
According to the invention, there is provided a unitary holder 11, made of a single piece of a suitable plastic, fabric, or metallic material. The holder is formed with turned-back or hook portion 12, at one end thereof, and a split portion, comprising bifurcation 15-16, at the other end thereof. The bifurcation stems from a crotch 17 in thickened portion 9. Intermediate the hook and the thickened portion 9 there is formed an integral band 13 providing a recess 19, in which the scoring pencil is held by frictional fit. The hook 12 is utilized to secure the ensemble to the golf bag, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, the hook 12 fitting over the top edge of the bag and frictionally engaging its inner side while the main portion of the holder abuts the outside of the bag, the fit being such as to maintain the holder snugly in place. The golf score card is deposited in the long, narrow V-notch formed by the bifurcations 15-16, the material of the holder 11 being sufficiently resilient to permit retention or withdrawal of the score card from crotch 17. The bag itself may be usedas a backing for the card when scores are entered on the card, the bifucation holding the card in place.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, various modifications and changes may be made therein and it is accordingly intended in the appended claims to cover a fair range of equivalents, affording proper protection to the invention.
Having disclosed my invention, I claim:
A golf score card and pencil holding attachment for a golf club bag comprising a unitary strip-like plastic body member of uniform width formed with a relatively thick central portion and a downwardly bent open hook portion of lesser thickness at one end and a vertically depending bifurcation converging to an apex at the other end and an intermediate closed integral band portion therebetween, said hook portion extending in the same direction as the bifurcation and being so formed with straight sides as to hang the attachment from the rim of a golf club bag, said band portion being formed as a width-wise extending closed substantially annular recess adjacent the bag for holding a scoring pencil, and said bifurcation being formed with a pair of straight fingers defining a width-wise extending crotch-like clamp for holding a score card in vertically suspended position alongside and generally tangent to said bag, said fingers comprising a split section in continuity with but longer than said central portion and of the same aggregate thick ness, said clamp gripping in vise-like manner the edge of the card which is parallel to the pencil and one of said fingers abutting said bag in snug continuity with the hook portion, whereby the scoring pencil and score card are secured in proximate relationship to each other and to the bag and are transported with said bag.
