SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,977,
Application filed Apr To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON CooNs, a oitizen of the United States, residing at Elizaville, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Ladder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to adjustable ladders, and has for its object to provide a ladder possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, ease of adjustment, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved adjustable ladder. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line a 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view, in perspective, of the adjustable footat the bottom of the ladder.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the ladder proper, which comprises the longitudinal side beams, B B, and the connecting-rungs 0, these parts being of any suitable construction.
D is a cross-piece that is secured at the bottom of the ladder A, and is provided with an upwardly and segmentally curved under edge, E, suitable brackets or loops, F F and G, respectix ely, at the ends and center of the said piece D, being arranged to extend across the said curved edge.
H is a curved foot-plate or support that is secured in place against the correspondinglycurved edge E, by the brackets F F and G, and is provided with outwardly-turned ends or feet I I, on which it rests, and that serve to pre vent the support from slipping from the said brackets. When the ladder is placed on uneven ground, this foot will automatically slide in the bracket, so as to accommodate itself to the unevenness of the ground, while the ladder will retain its upright position. The support H is preferably provided with notches J, that are engaged by a spring-catch, K, to retain the support in position.
L L are the adjustable standards, which are connected to the beams B B, near their top ends, by a universal joint such as shown at M. These standards consist of two parts, N and 0, each of which carries a collar, P, at its end,

(No modeh) that encircles the other parts and slides thereon, and both are provided with a series of perforations, Q, through which an adjusting-pin, R, can be passed to retain the parts N and O in the position to which they have been rela tively adjusted. At their bottom ends the standards are connected by a cross-piece, S, comprising, like the standards, two parts, T and U, having the collars V, perforations W, and the pin X. The standards can be adjusted to regulate the inclination of the ladder A, while the cross-piece S is adjusted to sepa rate the standards and obviate any possibility of the ladder falling over sidewise when adjusted high. Vheels or rollers Y Y are preferably j ournaled at the ends of the axle crosspiece S to facilitate adjustment and transportation of the ladder.
Z Z designate cross-pieces that are connected to the outer ends of the portions T and U of the axle-piece S, and extend to the longitudinally disposed guide -st-aple Z on the rear edge of the beams B B, so that the said braces Z Z can slide on the staple during adjustment of the ladder. The braces cross each other, as shown at Y and are connected together by a pin, X passed through perforations W The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, convenient, and can be readily adjusted, as desired; and on uneven ground it will automatically assume and retain its upright position by reason of the action of the sliding foot piece or support.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the ladder, the standards connected thereto, and comprising the parts N and 0, having collars P and perforations Q, and the pin R, the cross-piece S at the bottom of the standards, comprising the parts T and U, collars V, perforations W, and the pin X, and cross-braces connecting the supporting, parts with the ladder, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the ladder having the longitudinally-disposed staples Z and the adjustable standards arranged to regulate the inclination of the ladder, of the crossbraces Z Z, having one end arranged to slide 011 the staples, and formed with the perforations VS, that receive a connecting-pin, as set forth.
