COMBINED STAND AND LID FOR A GARBAGE PAIL Filed Jan. 7. 1955 John B 111 917,
INVENTOR BY W.
ATTORNEYS United. States Patent COMBINED STAND 1x 13 2511) FOR A GARBAGE John Burgh, Denver, Colo., assignor, by decree of distribution, to Carl W, Burgh Application January 7, 1955, Serial No. 480,416
1 Claim. (Cl. 312-214) This invention relates to an improved combination of a stand and lid for a garbage pail or the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved combination of a stand and lid for a garbage pail of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter which is particularly designed for use over an extended period of time in excess of the normal time for which a stand and lid of a conventionally formed and distributed garbage can and lid therefore are normally used.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved garbage can stand and lid of this kind which is both insect proof and weatherproof by a resilient seal carried by the lid of the cover.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation of an improved combination of a garbage pail stand and lid therefore constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the invention shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section of the novel combination taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view, partly broken away, of a modified form of my stand and cover.
In my prior invention filed in the United States Patent Ofiice on October 13, 1953, Serial No. 385,805, now Patent No. 2,726,833, issued December 13, 1955, for a combined stand and garbage pail a somewhat similar combination of a stand and garbage pail is provided with resilient means, such as a spring, for urging the lid of the garbage pail into sealing engagement with the upper end of the garbage pail and it is therefore an object of this invention to provide an improved combination of garbage pail stand and lid having a seal between the lid of the garbage pail and the refuse collecting container or pail constructed according to an embodiment of this invention. I
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral designates generally a combination stand and lid for a garbage pail constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. a
The combined stand and lid 10 is formed with a tubular open ended body 12 engageable at the lower end on a base 14. The base 14 is provided with a stepped up bottom 15 having upstanding side walls or flanges 16 around the periphery thereof as clearly defined in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At the lower end of the side walls or flanges 16 an outwardly extending bottom 17 is formed on or attached to the lower end of the body 12.
The body 12 has an upper end 18 spaced above the lower cylindrical end 19 by the bead 20 which extends inwardly of the body around the periphery of the outer side walls thereof.
The U-shaped fixed leaf 21, including the arms 22 thereon, provides the spaces for the hinge which is supported on the body 12 of the tubular support 11. The
2,828,176 Patented Mar. 25, 1958 hinge block 24, pivoted between the arms 22, provides for the'hinge of the lid on the base 25 of the hinge. The vertically extending supporting arm 26, secured at its lower end to the hinge block 24 provides the supporting arm or base'for the hinge on which the lid is supported. The hinge pin 27 extends through the arms 22 and block 24 and provides for. the hinged movement of the lid supporting arm or post 26.
A horizontally and inwardly extending arm 28 extends perpendicular to the post 26 spaced upwardly from the hinge for the post and on which the lid of the garbage or refuse can is supported.
A concavo-convex lid 29 is provided for the upper end of the support 11 being held on the horizontally extending arm 28, spaced from the ends thereof, by a bolt or screw 30 engaging through the lid and with the horizontally extending arm 28 when the upper end of the tubular open ended body 12 is closed by the use of this combination. A split clamping bracket 31 is adjustably disposed along the length of the horizontal arm 29 and carries the screw 30 which engages through the lid 29. The bolt or screw 32 which engages transversely through the bracket 31 will at the same time position the bracket and the lid at a selected position along the length of the horizontally extending supporting post 28.
An adjusting bolt 34 will extend through the opposite arms of the adjusting bracket 35 for positioning the vertically extending adjusting bracket 35 on the hinged supporting post 26 for accurately determining the position at which the lid of the receptacle should be carried by the combination as outlined above.
A substantially concavo-convex seal 36 is carried by the concave surface of the lid 29 and will engage the upper edge of the upper end 18 of the body 12 to sealingly close this upper end of the body from insects and from any weather which might seek to penetrate into the garbage pail as supported on the stand.
The cover or lid 29 is provided with a peripheral annular flange 37 which has a peripheral annular wall or flange thereon to cover the outer edge of the seal between the lid and the upper end of the closed tubular body 12.
A wall or mid base 39 is extended transversely of the body 12 intermediate the length thereof having holes or apertures 40 therethrough for supporting the pail 41 or receptacle containing the refuse to be sealed and contained within the stand and lid described above.
A pan 42 is disposed within the lower end of the body 12 on the upper surface of the bottom 15 to receive and contain powdered lime or any other deodorizing material from the pail 41 through the wall 39 in the stand.
Insulation 44 is disposed on the inner surface of the upper cylindrical end 18 of the body 12 whereby to maintain the temperature of the receptacle at a more or less even temperature above that of freezing and at which the liquid material may pass through the apertured wall 39 when and as desired.
In Figure 4 of the drawings there is shown a modified form of lid for this combination of stand and lid 29a for a garbage pail in which the lid is merely concavo-convex in configuration and the seal 36:: is fiat and spaced from the attaching bolt or screw 30 although in both types of sealed lids the lid shall be sealed from the entrance of insects or the entrance of water exterior of the combination stand and lid described above.
It can obviously be seen that during the use and operation of this combination stand and lid for a garbage pail when the lid is hingedly moved to an open position of the stand the pail may be inserted into the upper open end of the tubular open ended body 12 to rest on the upper surface of the apertured wall 39. To remove the pail 41 from the combination stand and lid 16 the lid 29 may be moved to an open position whereupon the pail may be removed from the combination stand and lid 11} when and as desired, 1
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
1 I claim: A stand and lid for a garbage pail comprising a tubular receptacle havingan intermediate internal bead, a drip pan at the bottom of said receptacle, a perforate plate supported on said bead, adapted to form a support for a garbage pail, insulation lining said receptacle above said bead adapted to prevent the freezing of the contents of said garbage pail, a bracket'extending from said receptacle at a point adjacent said bead, a supporting arm pivoted on said bracket, a horizontal arm adjustably mounted ,on said supporting arm, a depending supporting bracket adjustably mounted on said horizontal arm, a concave-convex lid secured to said supporting bracket, a concavo convex seal interiorly of said lid, and a peripheral flange on said lid enclosing the edges of said seal.
