DEVICE FOR SETTING UP DEAD GAME FORDEUOY PURPOSES. NO. 283,195.
Patented Aug. 14, 1883.
mx gm. 90772606 ATTORNEY WITNESSES UNIT- STATES PATENT @FFICE.
WALTER R. BENJAMIN, on HOLDER, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,195, dated August I4, 1883.
Application filed April 18,1883. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WALTER RB NJAMIN,
' of Holder, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Devices for Setting up Dead Game for Decoy Purposes; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device with a duck attached thereto; Fig. 2, a similar view, showing my improved device as adapted for land fowls or birds; Fig. 3, a detached view of the curved arm 0 and its attachments.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices to which water or land fowls may be secured and used as decoys by hunters to lure game within range of their guns; and to this end the invention consists in novel features of construction and v 5 combination of parts, all as will be hereinafter goipoint, b, which may be armed with a fish-hook termination, if deemed expedient, to prevent the ball or weight A at the lower end of said wire or rod Bfrom drawing it out of the duck, said wire or rod terminating in an enlarged point, b, to prevent weight from falling off.
0 represents an upwardly-curved wire or rod, provided with a slide, 0 at its lower. end, through which the wire or rod B passes, and which wire or rod 0 can be vertically adjusted on wire or rod B, and secured in any desired position by a set screw, a, passing through slide and engaging said wire or rod B. In case of a simple point, 6, parts B and O can be separated or disconnected for convenience of carrying to the hunting-ground and in some cases the set screw may be dispensed with and wire or rod B adapted to fit snugly in slidec The upperend of wire or rod 0 terminates in a point, 0, and also in double or forked spring arms D D, whose upper ends terminate in or are provided with two black balls, E E, resembling the eyes of. a duck, or similar tothe common shoe-buttons.
When this device is to be used, parts-B and C areconnected together, as shown in Fig. 1, the duck being pierced in the breast by the point I), and breast resting on the part 0, with point a piercing the head under the jaw, while the spring-arms D D are opened, so as to take the head of the duck between them with the balls E E over the eyes of the duck, and then the device and duck placed in the water as a decoy, the ball or weight A assisting in keeping the duck in an upright position. The ball or weight A slides upward on the part B, so that the lower point, b, can be forced into the ground and part. 0 adjusted on part B, so
that the device may be used as a decoy for land-birds, all as clearly shown in Fig. 2..
My improved device relieves the hunters from carrying a large number ofdecoy birds, is simple and durable in construction, while it can be separated or disconnected to pack for transportation. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a decoy attachment fowls or birds, the combination of the pointed wire or rod B and curved pointed wire or rod 0, having forked spring-arms D D, pro
vided with the balls E E, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a decoy attachment for water or land fowls or birds, the combination, with the pointed wire or rod B, of the removable curved wire or rod 0, provided with the forked springarms D D, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a decoy attachment for water or land fowls or birds, the combination, with the pointed wire or 1 011113, of the removable and adjustable curved and pointed wire or rod 0, havingthe forked spring-arms D D, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
4. In a decoy attachment for water or land for water or land fowls or birds, the combination, with the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I pointed wire or rod 13, having sliding weight have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of A, of the removable and adjustable curved l March, 1883.
and pointed Wire or rodC, having the forked YVALTER R. BENJAMIN. 5 spring-arms D 1), provided with the balls E Witnesses:
E, substantially as and for the purpose here- THos. SLADE,
in shown and described. E. M. HAMILTON.
