Claims. 1 (Cl. 222-324) This invention relates to devices for using oil from conventional oil cans in which oil is contained at filling stations, and in particular a comparatively small thumb actuated pump having a pump or valve body With an intake tube having a sharp outer end and a check valve therein depending from the body and having a spout, also having a check valve therein, extended upwardly from the body whereby with the top of an oil can punctured by the intake tube oil may be pumped by a thumb of a hand gripping a handle by which the device is secured to a can from the can through the spout.
The purpose of this invention is to facilitate using oil from conventional oil cans whereby oil may be pumped into relatively small openings without waste.
Various types of spouts have been provided for pouring oil from oil cans, however, in tilting a can and also in supplying the oil to a relatively small opening there is Waste of oil and it is ditficult to wipe the oil from the surface of the engine. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a pump adapted to be installed on an oil can whereby oil is pumped from the can and injected into a grease fitting or oil hole or upon a surface or device, as desired.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide an attachment for an oil can whereby oil may be pumped from the can to a desired point without waste.
Another object of the invention is to provide a manually actuated pump for an oil can in which the pump may readily be snapped upon the end of a can.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an improved oil can pump that is adapted to be reused.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for pumping oil from oil cans through an outlet spout in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a combination valve and pump body, a plunger slidably mounted in'the body and having a connecting rod with a button on the extended end extended therefrom, an intake tube having a sharp puncturing point on the extended end and a check valve in the inner end extended from the lower side of the body, a spout also having a check valve in combination therewith extended from the upper part of the body, and a handle actuated clip for temporarily clamping the device on the end of a can with the intake tube extended through an opening punctured in the end of the can by the sharp end thereof.

Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the combination valve and pump body showing hook-like shoulders on the sides for retaining side members of the spring clip in position against the sides of the body.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved pump actuated oiler of this invention includes a body 10 having a valve section 11 and a pump section or cylinder 12, a plunger 13 positioned in the cylinder, a button 14 positioned on the extended end of a connecting rod 15 extended from the plunger or piston, a spring 16 positioned in the cylinder, an intake tube 17 having a ball check valve 18 in the upper end depending from the section 11 of the body, a spout 19 extended from a check valve 20 in the upper end of the section 11 of the body, and a wire loop having wires 21 and 22 and a handle 23 whereby the pump is clamped upon an oil can 24.
' The outer end of the cylinder 12 is provided with a cap or head 25 which is threaded on the end of the cylinder and the connecting rod 15 extends through an opening 26 in the cap, as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the cylinder is provided with a shoulder 27 which forms a seat for the spring 16 and from the shoulder an opening 28 provides communicating means with a chamber 29 in the lower end of the valve body.
' The tube 17 is secured in a ferrule 30 which is threaded in the valve body at the lower end of the opening 29 and the ferrule is provided with a shoulder 31 which forms a valve seat upon which the ball 18 is positioned.
The valve body is also provided with an opening 32 that extends from the chamber 29 and a shoulder 33 at the upper end of the opening 32 provides a seat for the ball 20.
The spout 19 is secured in the upper portion of an opening 34 extended from the shoulder 33 and the upper end of the spout is provided with a nozzle 35. The lower end of the intake tube 17 is provided with a beveled surface 36 forming a relatively sharp point 37 that is adapted to puncture an opening in the upper end 28 of the oil can.
The device is retained in position by a spring wire loop including the wires 21 and 22, which are positioned in recesses 38 and 39 at the sides of the valve body 11 and the extended ends of the wires 21 and 22 are connected with a cross member or hook 40 that is adapted to be secured below the edge of a rim 41 at one side of the upper end of the can. The wires 21 and 22 extend to a socket 42 on the handle 23 and the end of the handle is provided with an arm 43 that is adapted to snap under the edge of the rim 41 on the side of the can opposite to that on which the wire or bar 40 is positioned.
With the parts formed as illustrated and described the handle 23 is drawn outwardly moving the center 44 of the socket member 42 over the center whereby the end of the arm 43 and bar 40 are released from the rim of the can so that the device may be readily removed; and in installing the device on a can the point 37 of the intake tube 17 is forced through the material of the end of the can with the lower end of the body 10 moving downwardly upon the upper surface of the end 38 and with the bar 40 positioned below the rim on one side and the end of the arm 43 below the rim on the oppo site side of the can the handle 23 is forced downwardly with the center 44 moving over the center or through a plane extended through the rim gripping points with a toggle action whereby the device is temporarily clamped on the can.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. An oil can pump comprising a combination valve and pump body having a cylinder therein, an intake tube having a check valve therein extended from said bo'dy, a. spout also extended from said body, a check valve in the body and positioned between the spout and cylinder, a plunger slidably mounted in the cylinder, means for manually actuating the plunger for pumping oil from. the can through the spout, said valve and pump body having wire retaining recesses in the sides and a clamp including spaced wires positioned in the recesses of the valve and pump body with a rim gripping hook on one end and with the opposite end pivotally connected to a handle, an end of which engages the rim on the opposite side of the can, the pivotal connection of the wires to the handle passing through a plane extended through the rim gripping points providing a toggle action for securing the body on the end of a can with the intake tube extended through an opening in the end of the can.
2. .In an oil can pump, the combination which comprises a combination valve and pump body having a cylinder therein and having recesses in opposite sides thereof, an intake tube extended from one side of the valve body, a spout extended from the opposite side of the valve body, check valves positioned to coact with the intake tube and spout, a plunger having a connecting rod with a button on the extended end slidably mounted in the cylinder, resilient means for urging the plunger outwardly, a wire loop freely mounted in the recesses on the body, a handle pivotally connected to said wire loop at a point whereby the handle is positioned to coact with the loop to clamp the bodywith a toggle action upon the end of a can with the intake tube extended through an opening in said can.

In an oil can pump, the combination which cornprises a valve and pump body having a cylinder therein, an intake tube having a beveled extended end extended from oneend of the body, a spout extended from the opposite end of the body, check valves positioned to coact with the intake tube and spout, a plunger slidably mounted in the cylinder, a spring in the cylinder for urging the plunger outwardly, a button extended from the plunger, a substantially U-shaped handle and a clamp including a wire loop pivotally connected to the handle and having a hook onone end and positioned tov grip a rim on the end of a can with an end of the handle in gripping relation with the rim on the opposite side of the can whereby upon pressing the handle against the can the pivotal connection point of the handle to the loop passes through a plane extended through the gripping points of the loop and handle on the rim for securing the device on the end of a can.

In an oil can pump, the combination which comprises a valve and pump body having a cylinder therein, an intake tube having a beveled extended end extended from one end of the body, a spout extended from the opposite end of the body, check valves positioned to coact with the intake tube and spout, a plunger slidably mounted in the cylinder, a spring in the cylinder for urging the plunger outwardly, a button extended from the plunger, a substantially U shaped handle and a clamp including a wire loop pivotally connected to the handle and having a hook on one end positioned to grip a rim on the end of a can with an end of the handle in gripping relation with the rim on the opposite side of the can whereby upon pressing the handle against the can the pivotal connection point of the handle to the loop passes through a plane extended through the gripping points of the hook and end of the handle with the rim of the can for securing the device on a rim at the end of a can with the intake spout extended through an opening formed thereby in the end of the can.

In an oil can pump, the combination which comprises a valve and pump body having a cylinder therein and having recesses in the sides thereof, an intake tube having a beveled extended end extended from one end of the body, a spout extended from the opposite end of the body, check valves positioned to coact with the intake tube and spout, a plunger slidably mounted in the cylinder, av spring in the cylinder for urging the plunger outwardly, a button extended from the plunger, a spring wire loop extended through the recesses in the sides of the valve body and having a hook on an end extended over the rim on the end of the can at one side thereof, and a handle pivotally connected to the wire loop and having an arm positioned to extend below the rim of the canon the side of the can opposite to that on which the hook of the loop is positioned whereby with the handle pressed inwardly the pivotal connection of the wire loop to the handle passes over the center with a toggle action securing the device in position on the can with the intake spout extended through the end of the can.
