Description

R. CIRQCCO MATTRESS COVER Oct. 21, 1958 Filed July 5, 1957 INVENTOR. c/eoccq ROS/N4 vwrga United States Patent MATTRESS COVER Rosina Cirocco, Allentown, Pa. Application July 5, 1957, Serial No. 670,122
1 Claim. (Cl. -354) This invention, a mattress cover, has as important objects thereof the following, among others:
First, to facilitate application of the mattress cover to conventional mattresses;
Second, to effectively cover and protect all areas of the mattress that would normally be subject to becoming soiled, faded and otherwise damaged by exposure;
Third, to provide a particularly strong construction of the cover, with especial attention to those areas that are subject to the heaviest wear and strain;
Fourth, to incorporate in the top or main portion of the cover a quilted or similar pad-like construction, whereby to still further protect the mattress by reason of the shockabsorptive qualities of said main portion;
Fifth, to provide a novel design of mattress cover that will be especially well adapted for manufacture from any suitable fabric, or in any desired size, as for example for both single and double beds; and
Sixth, to permit manufacture of the cover at a low cost.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claim appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress cover according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view in which the cover has been inverted to show the underside thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through one side portion of the cover, taken substantially on line 3--3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modification.
The mattress cover 10, which may of course be of any size and of any suitable flexible material, includes a rectangular, horizontal main panel 12 adapted to overlie and completely cover the mattress, not shown. Depending from the edge of the main panel is a peripheral wall 14 overlying the side and end walls of the mattress in the applied position of the cover. Integral with the lower edge of wall 14 is a laterally inwardly extending, wide, continuous, peripheral lip 16 underlying the mattress.
Main panel 12 is quilted in the illustrated example of the invenion, and includes outer and inner cover pieces 18, 20 respectively, between which is confined a thickness of padding 22 of any suitable kind. Along the periphery of the panel, there is a binding or welting 24 of part-circular cross-section comprising an integral connecting portion joining the outer and inner covering pieces 18, 20. The padding is extended within the welting (Figure 3).
Wall 14 is also formed of a flexible material, comprising a single-thickness member 26 the top edge portion 28 of which is in overlying relation and curves transversely in correspondence with, connecting portion 24. At opposite sides of the welting, stitching 30 passes fully therethrough, extending through opposite sides of the portions 28, 24, as well as through the padding.
At selected locations registering with the positions of the mattress handles, the member 26 is reinforced by rectangular pieces 32 of fabric which are marginally secured by stitching to the inside surface of the member 14. In member 26 and piece 32, elongated, registering, horizontal openings are formed, these being bound along their edges and forming an aperture 34 through which access is had to a mattress handle.
Lip 16 comprises an integral extension 36 of member 26, reinforced by a fabric binding 38 along its inner edge, said binding being stitched at 40 to the member 36.
At the several corners of the cover, added reinforcing means comprises diagonally extending darts 42 stitched at 44. These have outer ends located barely short of the outside corners of lip 16 so that there is full flexibility of the cover at the lower corners thereof. The darts at their inner ends terminate at and are secured directly to the inside corners of the lip, so that the welted darts merge into the welting or binding 40 to cause strain at the corners to be taken up directly by the corner darts and transmitted to and along the binding 40.
The cover, as will be apparent, is applicable to or removable from a mattress with maximum speed and ease. Further, the cover can be washed or cleaned without difficulty.
In Figure 4, a modified cover 10a having a main panel 12a, peripheral wall 14a formed as a fabric member 3611, and lip 16a having binding 38a stitched at 40a, differs from the first form only by having its reinforcing pieces 32a extending vertically rather than horizontally, and by having its openings 34a also extended vertically so that vertical mattress handles (found on many mattresses) will be accessible therethrough.
It is believed clear that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof decribed above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A mattress cover including a main panel proportioned to fully cover the top surface of a mattress; a depending peripheral wall thereon for covering the sides and ends of the mattress; an inwardly extending lip on the bottom of said wall extendable under the mattress; and a peripheral welting at the juncture between the main panel and said wall, the welting comprising superposed welting portions respectively integral with the panel and wall, said p nel including outer and inner covering pieces extending the full area of the panel and a thickness..of, padding between. saidpieces also extending oven the full area of the panel, said portion of the panel being integral with and being connected between the peripheries of said pieces, the periphery of the padding extending into the welting and filling the same, the welting portions being curved transversely through the major part of a circle about said periphery of the padding, said welting including stitching extending through said portions, the stitching being extended through each portion at both-ends of the curvedescribed thereby and-beingalso extended through the padding.
