4 Claims. (Cl. 2120-14 This invention relates to plastic containers having covers forming closures therefor. More particularly, the invention deals with containers of this type and kind, wherein the cover and/or container includes integral means, which can be fashioned or spunover in retaining a ticket or label against displacement from either or both parts of the resulting containers.

Still more particularly, the invention deals with the container assemblage of the character described, wherein the bottom wall of the container and/or the cover for the container, can include a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings covered by the ticket or label applied to the wall of the container or the cover.

Also, the invention deals with a structure, wherein at least one wall of the assemblage includes a vent opening to prevent compression of air in the resulting container and also preventing displacement of the cover from the container.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a container assemblage made according to my invention, showing tickets or labels supported on the container and cover parts.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section of part of the cover shown in Fig. 1, prior to securing the ticket or label in position thereon.

Fig. 3 is a view, similar to Fig. 1, showing part of the lower portion of the container on an enlarged scale and showing a modification.

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of cover blank, prior to securing the ticket or label thereto, part of the ticket or label being broken away.

Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.

Fig. 6 is a view, similar to Fig. 5, showing only a part of the construction and showing a modification; and

Fig. 7 is a view, similar to Fig. 6, showing the ticket or label secured in position by the forming or spinning-over of the ticket or label holding means.

In Fig. l of the drawing, I have shown, at 10, a plastic container, which can be used for the storage of articles of various types and kinds and, in some instances, the container can be formed of transparent plastic material. The container has a bottom wall 11, which is reinforced by an outwardly extending annular rim or bead 12. On the lower surface of the container is provided integral ticket or label supporting means 13, which, in the construction shown, is in the form of an annular flange, which initially extends downwardly from the container in the manner of the flange 13', shown in Fig. 3, and is then later formed or spun-over to form the ticket or label engaging member 14 for supporting a ticket or label 15 on the lower surface of the wall 11, in the manner clearly shown.

The cover 18 is also moulded from plastic material, which can be the same as the material of the container, or contrasting thereto, and the cover is of greater diameter than the top of the container, thus forming an outwardly projecting annular portion 19 on said cover, which facilitates removal of the cover from the container whenever desired.

The cover 18 also includes outwardly projecting ticket or label engaging means 20, similar to the means 13, and is normally moulded in the outwardly extending position, shown in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawing, prior to securing the ticket or label 21 in position on the cover. The means 20, in the construction shown, is in the form of an annular member which is fashioned or spun-over to form the ticket or label engaging member 22, as noted in Fig.1 of the drawing.

At this time, it will be understood that, while, in many instances, it is desirable to employ the tickets or labels on both the bottom wall of the container and the cover, in some cases, one of these tickets or labels can be omitted.

Turning now to Fig. 3 of the drawing, here is shown a slight modification in the container and, in said figure, part of the lower portion of a container 10' is shown, the container 10' differing from the container 10 in providing, in the bottom wall 11' thereof, a plurality of circumferentially spaced large openings 23, generally similar to the openings shown in the cover of Fig. 4, later described.

The container 10' includes the bead or rim 12' and the central portion of the container includes a supplemental ticket or label engaging means 24, which leaves a central vent opening 25 in the bottom wall 11' of the container. The means 24 is also adapted to be shaped or spun-over to engage the inner small diameter portion 26 of a tigket or label 27, the ticket or label 27 being in the form of a ring, rather than the solid ticket or as shown at 15 in Fig. l of the drawing. It will be understood that 13' and 24 are simultaneously spun-over in securing the ticket or label 27 in position on the bottom wall.

In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I have shown a modified form of cover 18' which differs from the cover 18 simply in providing circumferentially spaced large openings 28 in the wall of the cover, which openings are closed by the ticket or label 21, similar to the ticket or label 21. The modified form of cover 18' includes structural parts, similar to the parts shown in Fig. 1, namely 17', 19' and 20".

In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing, I have shown, at 29, another form of cover, which can be employed, the cover differing from the cover 18 in including a central vent opening 30, around which is formed outwardly extending ticket or label engaging means 31, similar to the means 24, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

In Figs. 6 and 7, the cover includes the inwardly ex tending annular flange 32 and the outwardly projecting annular portion 33, similar to 19 of Fig. 1, as well as the ticket and label engaging means 34, similar to the means 20. In Fig. 6, 34 is shown in its normal moulded position; whereas, in Fig. 7, 34 has been fashioned or spunover to form the label engaging member 35 and, in Fig. 7, 31 is also spun-over to form the label engaging member 36, the label being shown at 37. Here again, the label 37 is in the form of a ring having a smaller central opening, rather than a label which extends entirely across the central portion of the cover.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that either the bottom wall of the container or the cover of the container can employ the vent opening and, in some in- 3 3 stances, the bottom wall of the container, and/or the wall of the cover, can include the circumferentially spaced large openings, the purpose of this latter construction being to lighten the container or, in other words, save the amount of material employed in the construction of the complete assemblage. Containers of the type and kind under consideration can be made in various shapes and sizes to adapt the same for use in packaging articles of various types and kinds, the containers being constructed to suit the merchandise being packed or stored therein.

In referring to tickets or labels, it will be understood that these strips or sheets can be characterized in any desired manner. It may, in some instances, be used to enhance the appearance of the resulting assemblage. In

-most instances, these characterized elements may be formed of paper or cardboard; whereas, in other instances, they can be in the form of suitably characterized plastic or other elements and, in using the term characterized, I have in mind not only printing or lithographing, but other means of characterization, such as shape and contour of the elements.

For purposes of description, the moulded plastic article can be regarded as a plastic body, to which a member such, for example, as the ticket or label is attached by forming or spinning-over the retaining means employed, this being done on at least one surface of the resulting body, or part of the resulting article. In shaping or spinning-over the retaining means, it will be apparent that this means is heated to facilitate this operation. Further, the article of manufacture disclosed may be said to comprise a two-part article, namely the container part and cover part, to which the characterized member is attached, or to one or both of said parts.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A container of transparent plastic for holding and displaying an article, said container being defined by side walls and having an open end and an opposite end closed by an integrally-formed bottom wall, an integral label-retaining flange on the outer side of said bottom wall adjacent the periphery thereof, a paper label mounted on said bottom wall and secured thereto by means of said flange, said label having a legend for identifying said article, said label being substantially coextensive in size and shape with the size and shape of said opposite end of the container; a cover of transparent plastic for said open end of the container, said cover having on the outer side thereof an integral label-retaining flange adjacent the periphery thereof, a paper label mounted on the cover and secured in place by said cover flange, said label being substantially coextensive in size and shape with the size and shape of said open end of the container, said cover having a vent of reduced size opening substantially centrally therein, an integral labelretaining flange on the cover around the periphery of saidvent, said label having a central opening substantially coextensive in size and shape with said vent opening, said last-mentioned flange extending through said label opening and serving to secure said label to said cover; and said bottom wall and said cover each having a plurality of weight-reducing, plastic-saving apertures circumferentially spaced therein.

2. A container of transparent plastic for holding and displaying an article, said container being defined by side walls and having an open end and an opposite end closed by an integrally-formed bottom wall, an integral labelretaining flange on the outer side of said bottom wall adjacent the periphery thereof, a paper label mounted on said bottom wall and secured thereto by means of said flange, said label having a legend for identifying said article, said label being susbtantially coextensive in size and shape with the size and shape of said opposite. end of the container, a cover of transparent plastic for said open end of the container, said cover having on the outer side thereof an integral label-retaining flange adjacent the periphery thereof, a paper label mounted on the cover and secured in place by said cover flange, said cover label being susbtantially coextensive in size and shape with the size and shape of said open end of the container, said cover having a vent of reduced size opening substantially centrally therein, an integral label-retaining flange adjac'ent the periphery of said vent, said cover label having a central opening substantially coextensive in size and shape with said vent opening, and said vent flange extending through said cover label opening and serving to secure said label to said cover.

3. The container ofclaim'2 wherein said bottom wall and said cover each has a plurality of weight-reducing, plastic-saving apertures circumferentially spaced therein.

4. A plastic container for an article comprising two interfitting parts, one part being defined by sides and having an open end and an opposite end closed by an integrally-formed wall,'an integral label-retaining flange on the outer side of said wall adjacent the periphery thereof, an indicia-bearing label mounted on said wall and secured thereto by means of said flange, the other part being adapted to close said open end of the first part, said other part comprising a wall having on the outer side thereof an integral label-retaining flange adjacent the periphery thereof, an indicia-bearing label mounted on said other part secured in place by said last-mentioned flange, said last-mentioned label being substantially coextensive in size and shape with the size and shape of said open end of the first part, one of said parts having a vent opening in the wall thereof, an integral flange around said vent opening, the label on said last-mentioned wall having an aperture through which said vent flange extends, and said vent flange engaging said label adjacent the aperture thereof.
