2 Claims. (Cl. 32--14) This invention relates to orthodontic devices, and more particularly to a cervical pad for use on an elastic cervical traction brace, the pad being applicable to the back of the neck, and the brace being adapted to hold in place under traction an orthodontic appliance.
Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of a pad of the class described which is comfortable on the neck and economical to manufacture; and the provision of such a pad with a plurality of loops for receiving the traction brace, with the construction of the pad such that the brace may be inserted through different numbers of loops as may be desirable. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.

Referring to the drawings, a cervical pad of this invention is shown to comprise a strip of pad material 1 (see Figs. 3 and 4) constituting the body of the pad. As shown, this strip l'consists of a layer 3 of foam rubber or the like and a facing 5 of cloth adhered to one face of the layer 3. Applied over the facing 5 is a strip of sheet plastic material 7 having generally the same width as the strip of pad material 1 and extending the full length of the strip of pad material. Strip 7 may be sheet vinyl plastic, for example.
Applied to the other face of the strip of pad material 1 is a strip of fabric 9 which is somewhat wider than the strip of pad material. Marginal portions 11 of this strip of fabric 9 are folded around the side edges of the strip of pad material 1 to overlie the margins of the plastic strip 7. Lines of stitching 13 at the side margins of the pad stitch down the folded-over marginal portions 11 of the strip of fabric 9 and secure the margins of the plastic strip 7 to the body of the pad. The ends of the pad are overstitched as indicated at 15.
The plastic strip 7 is formed with a plurality of transverse slits 17 spaced at equal intervals along the length of the plastic strip and extending between the edges of the folded-over marginal portions 11 of the strip of fabric 9. Portions 19 of the plastic strip between the slits 17 constitute loops for the reception of an elastic cervical United States Patent Ofic@ 2,874,468 Patented Feb. 24, 1959l traction brace such as indicated at 21. The brace may be inserted through as many of the loops 19 as desired. Fig. 2 shows the brace inserted through two loops 19 at the ends of the pad and through two intermediate loops 19 which are spaced from one another and from the end loops.
It will be understood that continuous lengths of the pad material 1, slitted plastic strip 7 and the fabric cover strip 9 may be combined to form a continuous composite strip which may then be segmented into individual pad lengths as long as needed for a particular neck size. Each of such individual pad lengths would have its ends overstitched as at 15 after being segmented.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As various changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.-
I claim: y
l. A cervical pad for use on a cervical traction brace, said pad being constituted by a strip of pad material of uniform thickness throughout its length, a strip of sheet plastic material on one face of the strip of pad material, the width of said strip of sheet plastic material being generally the same as the width of said strip of pad material, a fabric cover strip on the other face 'of the strip of pad material, said fabric cover strip being wider than the strip of pad material and the plastic strip and having side marginal portions folded around the side edges of the strip of pad material and overlying the margins of the plastic strip, lines of stitching throughout the length of the pad at the margins of the pad extending through said marginal portions of the cover strip and through the plastic strip and the strip of pad material and stitching down said marginal portions of the fabric cover strip and securing the margins of the plastic strip to the strip of pad material, said plastic strip having transverse openings extending between the edges of said marginal portions of the cover strip, portions of the plastic strip between the openings constituting loops for the reception of the brace, and the margins of said plastic strip being continuous and uninterrupted and underlying said folded side margins of the cover strip and caught in said stitching.

A cervical pad for use on a cervical traction brace, said pad being constituted by a strip of pad material of uniform thickness throughout its length consisting of a layer of foam rubber having a cloth facing adhered to one face thereof, a strip of sheet plastic material on said cloth facing of the strip of pad material, the width of said strip of sheet plastic material being generally the same as the width of said strip of pad material, a fabric cover strip on the other face of the strip of pad material, said fabric cover strip being wider than the strip of pad material and the plastic strip and having side marginal portions folded around the side edges of the strip of pad material and overlying the margins of the plastic strip, lines of stitching throughout the length of the pad at the margins of the pad extending through said marginal portions of the cover strip and through the plastic strip and the strip of pad material and stitching down said marginal portions of the fabric cover strip and securing the margins of the plastic strip to the strip of pad material, said plastic strip having transverse openings extending p Y r 2,374,458
