Description
NQ. 288,654. Patented Novgzo, 1883.
l l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. MORSE, OF ROSTON7 MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,654, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed March 26, 1883. (Model.)`
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY T. MORSE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Folding Basket, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
' My invention relates to the construction of baskets, and has for its object the making of a basket which will Substantially answer the purposes of ordinary baskets of like form, and which, when not in use, can be foldedA and closed up, thereby rendering it less cumbersome to store away or carry.
Figure lof the drawings is a side view of a basket illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of the basket-frame closed. Fig. 4 is a perpendicular view of the basket openylooking into it. Fig. 5 is a sectional viewof the hoop C and the bag attached together, and `FigfB is an enlarged section'through the joint.
B C D E F represent the hoops or ribs which form the frame-work of the basket. A is the handle. These are constructed of metal, or of wood, with the ends, where joined at H H, plated or faced with metal, to preyent splitting or wearing on the bolts hereinafter described. The ends of the hoops B O D F and handleA are pierced with round holes, and of E `with square holes, through all of which the. bolts H H pass, and thereby join the parts together. The bolts H H, starting from the head, are square for asufcient length to fit into thesquare holes pierced in hoop E, which is the outer hoop where the ends meet. Thereby the bolts are held in place and prevented from turning. The remainder of the bolts are round, and are threaded at the ends, one to the right and the other to the left, for a sufcient length to pass through the holes in the handle A,'which is the inner hoop where the ends meet. j These holes in A arealso threaded to correspond with and iit upon the bolts H H, and the handle is so adjusted on the bolts by means of the washers n n that one-half turns from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Figs. l and 2, tightens the ends joined bythe bolts,
and thereby holds the parts of the basket firmly in position when open, as in Fig. l.
For the purpose of additional means of holding the basket open, hooks can be attached to handle A, if desired, which hook into staples or buttons fastened to the hoops B C and pre- Vent the basket from closing.
K is a piece of tape or.web, which is attached to the hoops B C D E-F in a manner to properly locate and hold in place these hoops when the basket is open, andwhich aids in supporting the bag hereinafter described.
N N is a bag, of cloth or crimped paper, made to t within the hoops of the basket, and is attached to buttons affixed tothe hoops B C. S S are knobs or buttons attached to the hoops B and C, upon which the bag N N is buttoned.
The basket open and ready for use, as described and shown in Fig. l, is closed by unfastening the hooks, if used, and turning down the handle A. Thereupon the ends ofthe hoops are loosened and the hoop E, turning with the bolts H H and the hoops B C D F turning on the bolts A H, swing together and into the poA sition shown in Fig. 3.
The forms and proportions of the basket may be varied to suit the purposes of its use. What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A basket-frame comprising hoops B, C, D, and F, all pivoted to turn on bolts H H, and the hoop E, fitted to turn with the bolts H H, and the handle A, secured to the nut J, where# by the frame may be set up and locked, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the basket-frame,
of the webs K K and bag N substantially as and for the purposes descpibed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication,in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 14th day of February, A. D. 1883.
HENRY T. MORSE.
' Witnesses: Y
JOHN D. GALE, JOHN D. DWYER.
