1 Claim. (Cl. 15-257) This invention relates to a mop cleaner and dust collector and is an improvement over the dust collector forming the disclosure in Patent Number 1,901.262, issued to E. Robideau, dated March 14, 1933.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved mop cleaner and dust collector which is adapted to be formed out of corrugated or other similar material which may be of fiber construction.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mop cleaner and dust collector which can be formed as a knock down device for assembly by the user.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved mop cleaner and dust collector which is in the form of a rectangular upstanding cabinet and which will prevent the spreading of dust from a mop when the mop is extended into the cabinet and is shaken while disposed within the cabinet.
A further object of this invention is to provide in combination, a housing, a bumper carried by the housing with a slot in the housing whereby the mop may be extended into the housing for cleaning the dust therefrom while confining or containing the dust.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved dust collector which can be produced at a relatively small cost and which will permit assembly of the device from a knock down position with a minimum of tools and other fastening means.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front of a dust collector constructed in accordance to an embodiment of this invention.

Referring to the drawings the numerals 10 and 11 designate a pair of side walls and the numeral 12 designates a rear wall. The opposite side walls 10 and 11 are formed integral with the rear wall 12, the several walls being formed from a blank sheet of fibrous material as shown in Fig. 4. This blank sheet of material which is of generally rectangular configuration is provided with a pair of vertical scores 13 and 14 along which the walls 10 and 11 are bent to assume a substantially right angular position with respect to the back wall 12.
A top wall 15 is formed integral with the rear or back wall 12 and is bent forwardly and downwardly along a score line 16 disposed at the upper edge of the rear wall 12. The top wall 15 is provided along the front edge thereof with a downwardly bent flange 17, the purpose for which will be hereinafter described. The side wall 10 has secured to the lower portion thereof a rail or bar 18 which is provided with an inwardly opening horizontal channel or groove 19. The bar 18 is secured to the inner side of the wall 10 by means of staples or fastening elements 20. The opposite side wall 11 also has a horizontally disposed bottom bar 21 secured to the inner side thereof which is also provided with a horizontal groove 22. The rear wall 12 has secured to the lower portion thereof a lower rail 23 having a channel or groove 24 extending from the inner side thereof and the groove 24 is disposed in the same plane as the grooves 19 and 22.
A front frame generally indicated at 25 is secured to the front of the cabinet and comprises a pair of vertical bars 26 and 27 which are provided in the rear edges thereof with grooves 28 and 29 respectively within which the forward edges of the side walls 10 and 11 are adapted to be fixedly secured. The vertical bars 26 and 27 also have fixed therebetween at a point substantially midway of the length thereof a horizontal connecting bar 30. The bar 30 is fixed between the vertical bars 26 and 27 by means of nails or other fastening elements 31. The upper edge of side wall 10 has secured thereto an upper horizontal bar 32 which is provided with a groove or channel 33 in the lower edge thereof within which the side wall 10 is adapted to be firmly secured. The side wall 11 has mounted on the upper end thereof an upper horizontal bar 34 having a groove 35 in the lower side thereof within which the Wall 11 is adapted to be firmly secured. The bar 32 is provided in the inner side thereof with a groove 36 within which the adjacent edge of top wall 15 is adapted to be firmly secured and bar 34 is provided with a groove 37 in the inner side thereof within which the adjacent edge of top wall 15 is adapted to be firmly secured.
The upper ends of bars 26 and 27 are secured together by means of an upper connecting bar 38 and the lower ends of the bars 26 and 27 are secured together by means of a lower connecting bar 39. The bars 26 and 27 have formed in the confronting inner sides thereof vertically disposed guide grooves 40 within which an upper closure member 41 is adapted to slidingly engage. The upper closure member 41 is constructed in the form of a plate 42 which at its opposite vertical edges slidingly engages in the vertical guide grooves 40 and the plate 42 is provided in substantially the transverse center thereof with a slot or vertically disposed opening 43. A pair of rubber or yieldable strips 44 and 45 are secured in grooves 46 and 47 respectively and the confronting edges of the rubber strips 44 and 45 are disposed in substantially contacting relation. These rubber strips 44 and 45 provide a means whereby the handle of the mop which is projected into the cabinet may be vertically moved within the cabinet so as to shake out any dust and deposit the dust into the lower portion of the cabinet or collector. The upper edge of the connecting bar 30 is provided with a rubber bumper 48 which is disposed at the lower ends of the two rubber members 44 and 45 and this bumper 48 may form a bumper against which the handle of the mop may be struck as the mop is shaken within the cabinet or collector.
The plate 41 has secured to the upper edge thereof a horizontal bar 49, the bar 49 having a horizontal groove 50 within which the upper edge of the plate 42 is adapted to be firmly secured.
The top wall 15has mounted therein a U-shaped bail or handle 51 which extends through the top wall 15 and also extends through a reinforcing plate 52. The inner ends of the handle or bail 51 are bent angularly as shown at "53 so that the bail 51 may collapse downwardly to substantially contacting position with the upper side of the top wall'15 when'the bail of handle is not in use.
The cabinet or collector hereinbefore described-is provided with a removable bottom and integral lower closure. This integral bottom and lower closure'includes a plate or sheet54 with a reverted reinforcing sheet '55 which is bent to underlie the sheet 54. The opposite longitudinal edges of the sheets 54 and 55 are adapted to slidingly engage in the lower channels 19 and 22 and also the channel 24 in the rear lower bar 23. The bottom member including the plates or sheets 54 and 55 also includes a lower closure 56 which extends upwardly from the sheet or plate 54. The opposite vertical edges of the closure 56 are reinforced by reinforcing bars 57. The upper edge of closure/56 is also reinforced by means of an upper horizontally disposed reinforcing bar 58. The closure 56 is held in its upper closed position by means of a pivoted latch or locking member 59 which is pivoted as at 60 to the intermediate bar 30. The bars 26 and 27 have fixed to the confronting inner faces thereof vertical :bars 61 which form stop means against which the lower closure 56 is adapted to engage when closure 56 is in a vertical closed position.
I The device hereinbefore described is shipped in knock down condition and at this time the wooden groove strips 18, 21 and 23 are separated from the walls 10, 11 and 12 and the strips 32 and 34 are also separated from the top wall 15. The frame 25 is also in knock down condition with the vertical members 26 and 27 and the connecting members 30, 38 and 39 disconnected from the side vertical members 26 and 27. The collector can be easily assembled by securing the bottom strips or bars 18, 21 and 23 to the inner sides of the walls 10, 11 and 12 and staples, nails, or other securing means as indicated at 20 may be used for securing the side Walls to the strips 10, 11 and 12. The remaining wooden strips may also be secured to the opposite side and top walls by staples, nails or other fastening means. When the device is in its assembled condition the combined bottom wall which is formed of the plates 54 and 55 is inserted in the lower horizontal channels 19, 22 and 23. In the operating condition of the collector the closure 56 is held in closed This collector will provide a sanitary means whereby dust may be shaken from a dust mop without having the dust blown about a room or blown about the exterior of a building and possibly into any open windows which may be positioned close to the window through which the mop may be extended. The collector hereinbefore described will hold a substantial amount of dust and at any time the collected dust may be removed by opening the bottom closure 56 and brushing out the collected and settled dust. The collector hereinbefore described may be made out of corrugated material, Masonite or other suitable material which will form relatively rigid walls which are of relatively light weight construction.

What is claimed is:
A dust collector comprising a cabinet formed of a sheet of fiber board material having parallel scored lines formed throughout the length thereof, spaced substantial distances from the side edges .of the board along which scored'lines said sheet is folded providing connected rear and side walls, one end of said rear wall extending a substantial distance beyond the adjacent ends of saidlside walls and separated from said rear wall by a line scored in the inner surface defining a section adapted to be folded along said latter scored line providing a top wall, horizontal bars having grooves formed longitudinally in the confrontinglinner surfaces thereof in which the side edgesofsaid top wall are secured, said horizontal bars also having longitudinally disposed grooves formed in the lower surface thereof in which the upper ends of said side wallsare secured, securing the side and top walls of the cabinet together at the top of the cabinet, vertical front bars having longitudinal grooves in which theforward edges of saidside walls are secured, said front bars also having vertical grooves formed in the confronting surfaces thereof, a vertical sliding closure fitted in the latter-grooves, said closure having a vertical slot therein through which the handle of a mop may be extended for effecting agitation of the mop within saidclosure, said closure having longitudinal grooves therein along the sides of said slo't, resilient strips having their edges fixed in said last mentioned grooves and engaging in the center of said slot to form a yieldable closure for said slot, a horizontal connecting bar connectedtbetween said vertical front bars, providing a stop for said closure on which said closure rests normally closing the upper portion of the frontof the cabinet, and a removable bottom fitted in said cabinet.
