PARTITION FOR FILING CABINET ROCKER COMPARTMENT Filed May 15, 1957 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. ARTHUR L H/GBERG HIS A T TOR/IE) United States Patent ice 2,905,336 PART'IT'ION'FOR FILING CABINET ROCKER COMPAR'IMENT Arthur-"L-Hig'lierg, Spencer-port, N.Y., assign'or to'Yawman and Erbe Manufacturing Gompany, Inc., Rochester, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Application May 15'; 1957, :Sefial No. #659,382 2 'Claims; (Cl. 211-484) This invention relates to a partition for a filingcabinet rocker compartment, and has for its'purpose to alford a readily attachable or detachable partition that is" securely held in the compartment and maintained against ac'cidental displacement when the compartment is either'in'its open or closed position.
More-particularly the invention has for its purpose to provide a practical and economical construction aifordmg a sheet metal partition that is quickly positionable in or removable from the rocker compartment, and which when in place cannot be dislodged except by a positive lifting movement of the front end of the partition when the compartment is in open position, and cannot be accidentally dislodged when the compartment is in closed position.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear clearly from the following description when read in conjunction \m'th the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a view in front elevation of a two compartment filing cabinet of the rocker type to which the invention is applicable, and showing the upper compartment in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing the operative position of the partition and its interlocked relation with the compartment;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the bottom of the compartment;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view through the compartment showing the bottom in plan view, and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the partition.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, 1 designates a rocker compartment that is pivotally supported within the housing or cabinet 2 and movable by any suitable linkage mechanism from a horizontal open position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to an upright closed position within the housing.
The invention has to do with a metal partition such as illustrated in Fig. 6 and adapted for being detachab ly positioned in the rocker compartment 1. To accomplish this, the metal partition is provided with a rearwardly projecting lug 3 preferably at the top of its rear edge 4. 5 designates a rounded projection formed at the bottom of the rear edge 4, 6 is a downwardly projecting lug on the bottom edge in proximity to the projection 5, and arranged between the lug 6 and the front of the partition is a downwardly projecting lug that includes a vertical shoulder 7 at its forward portion, a downwardly inclined surface 8, and a rearwardly extending projection 9 separated from the bottom edge 10 of the partition by a recess 11, while 12 designates the front vertical edge of the partition.
To hold the partition in place, the compartment is pro- 2,905,336 Patented Sept.- 22; 1-959 vided in-its rear wall 13'with a seriesof slots 14', see Fig. 1, anyone of which is adapted to receivethe-lug. 3 of a partition, while 1'5 designates slots provided-in the bottom wall of the compartment in line with the slots' 14, and each adapted :to receivea-lug 6 of the partition: The bottom 16'of the compartment is provided with 21 wide elongated channel 16a extending endwise of the compartment, the channel being.- defined by afib'ottom' "wall 17 while-'15] a is a'secon'd bottom spaced 'below the limit-0111 16 with which-it is connected, and'loca-ted 'beneath-and in Contact with the bottom'wall 17 of the channel, and tthe rear edge of the bottom 16 adjacent to channel isbent slightly downwardly-as shown at18in order that'when'a file papers are inserted into the compartment, they'will readily .slideover the downwardly curved edge 18 and not be torn =or damaged-thy a sharp edge at .this'point.
This downwardly eirtendingedge or fiange"1 8is slotted shown-mat 19 tor'e'ceive the'portion 9of" the forward lug on'the partition, which is positioned by. first inserting the upper lug 3=at the-upper edge into a slot 14; next positioningFa lug-6 into a'slot15; and finallyins'e'rting' the lug 9 through a slot 19 and under the bent flange or wall 18 until the partition is arranged as shown in Fig. 3.
When in this position, the forward portion of the bottom edge of the partition shown at 21 rests upon the bottom of the compartment, lugs 3 and 6 engage the slots 14 and 15 respectively, lug 9 is located in the channel engaging under the flang 18 and bottom wall 16 of the compartment, while the vertical shoulder 7 abuts the adjacent edge of the bottom of the compartment or the forward edge of the channel.
The partition is removed by grasping the forward end of the partition and lifting it until the vertical edge 7 is clear of and disengaged from the adjacent edge of the channel in the bottom wall of the compartment, during which operation the partition is rocked on the projection 5 at its rear edge, the edges 22 and 23 of the partition being sufficiently spaced from the adjacent surfaces of the compartment to permit such movement, see Fig. 3. The partition is thus held securely against accidental displacement when the compartment is in its horizontal or operative position. When the compartment is moved to its inoperative or vertical position within the housing, the lug or hook portion 9 at the forward part of the partition remains engaged over the edge 18 of the bottom wall and is suspended thereon so that it cannot be accidentally displaced.
While the invention has been described with reference to the structure herein shown, it is not confined to the details disclosed, and this application is intended to cover such modifications or departures as may come within the purposes of the improvement or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A filing cabinet rocker compartment removable metal partition having spaced lugs on :its bottom edge in the same vertical plane adapted to engage an elongated compartment channel and slot respectively in the bottom of the compartment, the compartment having a rear verti cal wall and a second bottom spaced below the first mentioned bottom of the compartment, a lug on the rear edge of the partition at the top thereof in the same vertical plane with the aforesaid lugs and adapted to engage a slot in the rear vertical wall of the compartment, the rear edge of the partition being spaced slightly from the rear vertical wall of the compartment below said lug at the top and said partition having a bottom edge that terminates at its rear in a rounded downwardly extending projection adapted to engage the first mentioned bottom of the compartment, the forward portion of said bottom edge resting upon said first mentioned bottom of the compartment and the remainder of said bottom edge of the partition being elevated slightly above said bottom. 2. A filing cabinet rocker compartment comprising a bottom having longitudinally spaced slots therein and a second bottom spaced below said first mentioned bottom,
a rear vertical wall having slots therein in alinement with said slots in the first mentioned bottom, said second bottom having an elongated wide channel extending endwise and including a bottom wall located in contact with said second bottom, and a removable metal partition having 'a lug on its bottom edge adapted to underlie a flange at the rear of said channel and to project through a slot in said flange while said partition has a vertical shoulder forwardly of said lug and adapted to seat against the adjacent edge of the first mentioned bottom within said channel, ,the forward part of the bottom edge of the partition resting upon the first mentioned bottom of the compartment While the rear part of the bottom edge of the partition is spaced above the first mentioned bottom of the compartment and terminates in a rounded downward projection resting upon the first mentioned bottom of the compartment, a lug in proximity to said rounded downward projection arranged in the same plane with the aforementioned lug and adapted to engage one of said slots in the first mentioned bottom of the compart- A ment, and a lug at the top of the rear edge of the partition in the same plane with the aforementioned lugs and adapted to engage one of said slots in the rear wall of the compartment, said rounded downward projection at the rear of the bottom edge of the partition acting to space the rear of the bottom edge of the partition from the first mentioned bottom of the compartment and to space the rear vertical edge of the partition ,from the rear vertical wall of the compartment, allowing sufficient play of the partition to permit it to be tilted upwardly about said downward projection at the rear of its bottom edge for the purpose of removing the partition from the compartment.
