Description

25 of the same.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL W. WEST, OF ALNA, MAINE.
ROOFING-SLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 291,248, dated January 1, 1884.
Application filed September 5, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be" it known that I, NATHL. WV. WEST, a .citizemef the United States, residing at Alna, in the county of Lincoln and State of Maine,
have invented a new and useful Roofing-Clamp,
that class which have for their object to support staging or scaffolding upon the roofs of houses while repairs are being made to the same; and it relates particularly to a simple and etficient clamp for supporting or hold- :5 ing in position the so-called gutter-hooks,
whereby stagingis secured upon the gable end of buildings.
My invention consists in the improved construction of said clamps which willbe hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out-in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved roofingclamps. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line as x in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, illustrating the device in position for operation.
The same letters refer to the same parts in 0 all the figures.
5 B, of rubber, leather, or other material which shall be sufficiently elastic and pliable to enable it to be pressed against the roofing, tiles, slates, or shingles with sufficient force to prevent the device from slipping, and yet without 4o injury to the said roofing material.
C is a n-shaped clamp-frame, to one end of which is swiveled the plate A by a plate or washer, D, upon the outer side of the said plate A, the other end of the clamp-frame C being provided with athumb-screw, E, to the innor end of which is swiveled awasher, F, having a protecting-cushion, G, which may be formed of rubber or other elastic material. The outer side of the plate A is provided near its ends with holes or recesses H H, surrounded by metallic re-enforcing plates or washers I I.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
To adjust the device in position for operation, the binding-clamp frame is made to straddle the edge of the gable end of the building, andthe clamping-plate A and tighteningscrew E are adjusted against the roofing on opposite sides of said edge. By tightening the said screw the device will then be secured firmly in position without danger of injuringthe roofing material. The gutter-hooks, which serve to support the staging or scaffolding, may now be adjusted in the recesses H in the outer side of plate A, and they will beheld and supported securely without danger of slipping or giving way, and without possibility of injury to the roofing, no matter of what material the latter may be composed.
I am aware of the patent to Silver and Fawcett, No. 150,900, May 12, 1874, and I claim nothing therein shown.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in roofing-clamps, the combination of a binding-plate having a cushion or protectingplate on its inner side, and provided on its outer side with metal-bound recesses, of a clamp swiveled centrally to the outer side of said plate, and having a tightening-screw provided at the end facingthe cushioned side of the binding-plate with a swiveled washer, likewise covered with an elastic cushion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. NATHANIEL W. WEST.
Witnesses: CHARLES WEEKs, EDWIN AMsDEN.
