Many proposals have been made for devices to support tooth brushing articles, such as tooth brushes and tooth paste tubes, but such proposals have not met with commercial success since they have generally been too complicated and unsightly and lacking in eye appeal. The present trend therefore is to recess the fixtures which support tooth brushes and tubes of tooth paste into special receptacles placed in the bathroom wall. Devices of this type are expensive and are not adapted to be addedto existing bathroom lavatory fixtures.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a novel form of enclosure for a tooth paste dispenser means and a holder for tooth brushing articles, and which enclosure includes two separable cover members ,that cooperate in closed position to form an. attractive enclosure or cover member, and which-when in open position providesfree access to the tooth brushing articles and to the tooth paste dispenser means.
An object is to provide novel removably hinged cover members of simple manufacture, and which can be easily and quickly removed from the frame member to permit effective cleaning of the cover members and frame, and then be easily and quickly replaced on said frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for integrating the side walls of the cover members with the side Walls of the frame member, and to further so construct the base area of the cover members that the dispenser unit when in closed position will occupy a minimal space on a bathroom wall.
A further object is to provide a novel frame structure of narrow width and sufficient depth so that the outer edges of the cover members therefore, when moved to open position, will not obstruct or interfere with the manual rotation of the knobs or handles for actuating the dispenser mechanism to dispense the contents of a collapsible tube.
A still further object is to provide a novel device of this type in'which the cover members are substantially duplicates and Separate and meet along a middle line or along a central plane of symmetry in closed position.
Yet another object is to provide a novel device of this type in which novel means are provided on the duplicate .cover members for retracting the tooth brush handles the depending free ends of tooth brushing articles in a rearward direction relative to the base portion of said cover members Still another object is to provide a frame member 1 capable of being attached to a wall and which serves the multi-purpose of pendently supporting tooth brushing 2 ,932,431 Patented Apr. 12, 1960 articles, and of pivotally engaging cover members to fully enclose the frame member and tooth brushing articles supported thereon.

The frame member generally designated '10 is preferably constructed of metal and includes a rear vertical wall portion 11 and a forwardly extending horizontal portion 12 formed integrally therewith.
A curved deflector lip 13 is provided at the forward end of, and is integral with, the horizontal forwardly extending platform or portion 12 that extends forwardly from the rear vertical wall portion 11. Side walls or flanges 14 and 15 are formed integrally with and extend upwardly from each side edge of the horizontal portion 12. For manufacturing economy the frame portions 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 may be formed from a single sheet of metal.
Dispensing rollers 16 and 17 are mounted on the forward ends of the side walls or flanges 14 and 15 and extend therebetween. The drive roller 16 is preferably formed of metal and is provided with a knurled, milled or otherwise roughened peripheral surface 18. The idler roller 17 is provided with a central shaft 19 which turns with the roller. The body of the roller 17 is formed of soft resilient material such as for example, rubber. The shaft 19 extends into apertures 21 (see Figure 8) provided in the side flanges 14 and 15. The drive roller 16 is provided with axial recesses at its opposed ends and these recesses receive stub shafts or pintles 22 fixed in the handles or knobs 24 and projecting through apertures 21a in side flanges 14 and 15. These knobs are manually operable to turn the drive roller 16. From this description it will be understood that the drive roller 16 and idler roller 17 are mounted for rotation about parallel axes and are held against lateral separation. The spacing of the rollers on side flanges 14 and 15 is somewhat less than one-half the sum of their diameters so that the soft body 20 on the idler roller 17 is normally slightly distorted or compressed by contact with the rough surface 18 of the drive roller 16.
As set forth in my copending application for Toothpaste Dispenser, Serial No. 456,356, filed September '16, 1954, the flattened end of a collapsible tube 25 may be inserted upward between the rollers 16 and 17. Turning of the drive roller 16 causes the tube to be fed upwardly between the rollers thereby to pressurize the contents of the tube. It the cap 26 is removed fromthe tube, tuming movement of the drive roller 16 serves to expel any desired amount of the contents of the tube through the opening normally closed by the cap. The apertures 28 are so arranged in portion 12 that when the handles'29 of tooth brushes 30 are inserted -there through, the bristles 31a thereof will extend forwardly of the rear wall portion 11, and in spaced relation depthwise in rear of deflector 13, thereby position- .ing the knobs 24 in an extreme forward position on frame "10 in order to permit access thereto for the manual rotation thereof, as hereinafter pointed out. The vertical portion 11 of the frame 10 may be provided with circular openings 31 and 32 and elongated openings 33 and 34 for reception of suitable fastening means, not shown, and which means extend through these apertures to rigidly and detachably secure the frame to a supporting bracket or wall, not shown.-
In accordance with my invention, cooperating removably hinged cover members 35 and 36 are detachably mounted onthe frame and in closed position these cover members serve to provide an enclosure for the tube 25 and tooth brushes 30 when the dispenser apparatus is mounted on the supporting bracket or wall. As shown in the drawings, each of these cover members is provided with a top wall 37, a side wall 38, a front wall 39, and a bottom wall 40. The top wall 37, front wall 39, and bottom wall 40 are joined by smoothly curved The upper portions of the side walls 38 are substantially vertical -while the lower portions thereof taper inwardly as indicated in Figure 4. The top, front and bottom walls 37,39 and 40 respectively of each of the cover members 35 and 36 terminate in edges 67 which extend for- Wa'rdly when cover members 35 and 36 are in open positioii to permit access to the tooth brushing articles. Ina s'much as the cover members are in open position when the dispenser is being operated, knobs 24 are positioned -sufliciently distant from the rear vertical wall portion 11 of frame 10, so that the forwardly protruding edges 67 of the cover members 35 and 36 will not obstruct free access to and easy rotation of knobs 24 by the hand of the operator when dispensing the contents of a collapsible tube. A hinge assembly 41 including spaced apertured ears or tabs 43 connects the rear edge 42 of the cover member 35 to one side edge of the frame portions 11 and 12. A similar hinge assembly connects the rear edge of the cover member 36 to the other side edge of the frame portions 11 and 12. Pins or pintles 61 and 62 are positioned in cover member 35 in vertically spaced relationship along the rear edge 42 thereof, and pins or pintles 63 and 64 are positioned in cover member 36 in verticallyspaced relationship along the rear edge 44 thereof (Fig. The apertured tabs 43 which extend from the horizontal portion 12 at the side edge of frame are adapted to receive one end each of the pins 61 and 63 of cover members 35 and 36 respectively, the other end of each of said pins 61 and 63 being fixedly embedded in its associated cover member. tabs 43 which extend from the vertical wall 11 of frame 10 are adapted to receive one end each of pins 62 and 'Apertured 64 of cover members 35 and 36 respectively, the other end of each of said pins 62 and 64 being fixedly embedded in its associated cover member. Adjacent each of said pins are slots 65 in the walls 38 which receive to swing about parallel laterally spaced axes. The swinging edge 45 on the cover member 35 engages and overlaps the swinging edge 46 on the cover member 36 and the top, front and bottom wall portions of the cover members 35, 36 terminate in such swinging edges 45, 46 which meet throughout their length along a central plane of symmetry when the cover members are in closed position.
A flat strip of spring steel 47 (Figs. 5-8) is secured to the rear wall portion 11 of the frame 10 between the pairs of upper and lower spaced tabs 43 by means of fasteners 48. The opposed ends 49 and 50 of this spring steel strip are bent to form spring tension means which engage flat portions on the cover members to hold/them in their ope n position as shown in Figure 6, or in closed positionas shown in Figure 7. In open position, the spring ends 49 and 50 engage fiat surfaces 51 and 52 formed by a boss 75 on the outer side surface of the cover members and in closed position these spring ends engage the flat surfaces 53 and 54 respectively. Flat surfaces 53, 54 are recessed a slight distance from the rear edge of the side walls 38 so as to accommodate the spring ends 49, 50 when the cover members are in closed position. The flat surfaces 51, 52, 53, and 54 are preferably slanted or canted to some extent to more effectively ensure that the cover members 35 and 36 remain fully open or fully closed. From the foregoing it will be seen that the cover members 35, 36 are of simple manufacture, and that they may be easily and quickly removed from the frame members 10 by merely lifting a cover member upwardly when in open position, so as to remove its pivot pins 61, 62 or 63 64 (as the case may be) from its associated ears or tabs 43 (the slots 65 permitting such upward movement), thereby enabling the cover members to be effectively cleaned, as
well as providing full access to the frame member for and 8) is cut out or recessed as at 66 on each side or edge thereof between the rear point of juncture of frame flanges 14, .15 with portion 12 and the upper pair of tabs 43, so as to receive sections 69 of cover members 35, 36 (Figs. 1 and 3) when said cover members are swung into closed position, and in such closed position the outer side wall surface of the cover members 35, 36 is substantially in vertical alignment with the outer surface of the flanges 14, 15, thereby integrating the side walls of the cover members and the frame member by bringing them into juxtaposition with each other, and thus reducing to a minimum the width of the unit so that it will occupy a minimal space on a bathroom wall. The knobs or handles 24 are not solid but are provided with apertures 56 so that air may circulate into and out more particularly pointed out in my copending application for Toothpaste Dispenser, Serial No. 456,356, filed September 16, 1954, now abandoned. This construction is best shown in Figure 1.
In order toprovide a pleasing appearance, the front walls 39 of the cover members taper downward and rearwardly toward the wall on which the device is mounted. As' best shown in Figure 2, the front walls 39 are slanted rearwardly to such an extent that the tube 25 does not hang vertically but is crowded toward the -rear-when the cover members are closed. The front walls 39ffo'rmed by the opposed cover members tapers rearwardly at the base so that the enclosure has a maximum depth near the upper end thereof and a minimum Idepthnear the lower end. The cover members serve,
by reason of said taper, to urge and retain the tube 25 in an inclined position, as shown in Figure 2. The tube,
in turn, engages the handle 29 of a central tooth brush and moves it rearwardly. In order to prevent the tube 25 from entering the space between two of the handles 29 of the tooth brushes30 and crowding them laterally into positions which may possibly interfere with closing ofthe cover members, I provide deflector'fins 57 on the inside surface of the side walls 38. Upon swinging of the cover members 35 and 36 from the open position shown in Figure to the closed position shown in Figure 1, the deflector fins 57 engage the outermost handles 29 on the front row of tooth brushes and swing them to an inclined position as shown in Figure 2. In this position, the outermost handles of the forward tier of tooth brushes are out of range of movement of the tube 25 and hence cannot be crowded laterally by the tube to interfere with closing of the cover members 35 and 36. It is apparent, therefore, that in closed position the fins 57 on cooperative cover members act to retract the handles of the outermost depending tooth brush articles into a compact rearward position. The effect of this operation of closing the covers, although functional, results in a structure having a shape pleasing to the eye. Furthermore, the
cover members by reason of the apertures 55 therein cooperate with the side flanges 14 and 15 of the dispenser support bracket as well as with the knobs or handles 24 to form asubstantial enclosure for the remainder of the dispenser mechanism and for the tooth brush articles positioned thereon. One purpose of bringing the cover members 35 and 36 and the side walls 14 and 115 into juxtaposition (the apertures 55 in the cover members cutouts 66 and spaced slots 65 assisting toward that end) is to enable the retractor fins on said cover members to be positioned in proximate relation to the outside forwardly positioned tooth brush handles, so as to draw said handles rearwardly and inwardly when the covermembers are closed. It will be understood that the effect of this construction enables the cover members to cooperate to produce a compact enclosure about the dispensing mechanism, with the free ends of the tube 25 and tooth brushes 30 as closely disposed to each other as possible. By bringing the side walls 38 into juxtaposition with the side walls 14, 15 of the frame member when the unit is closed, the width of the top walls 37 (Fig. 1) is not only reduced to a minimum for compactness of the device, but a further advantage is gained thereby in that, when the cover members 35, 36 are moved to open position, the outer edges 67 of said cover members will not obstruct or interfere with easy and efficient manual rotation of knobs 24 during actuation of the tube dispensing means, or with the removal or replacement of tooth brushes 30 in the apertures 28. Further, accidental disengagement of the cover members 35, 36 (whenclosed) from the tabs 43 will be prevented by engagement of the walls forming apertures 55 with'the edges of side walls 14, 15, and particularly by the engagement of the end of spring tension means 49, 50 with the walls of recess 70.
An important feature of my invention resides in the fact that swinging of the cover members 35 and 36 to open position, as shown in Figure 5, produces an access opening 58 between the rear edges 59 and 60. The tooth brushes 30 may be readily lifted through this access opening from their position at rest on the support member 12.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description of the various parts. It will be understood that the dispensing apparatus is fully accessible when the cover members are in open position and that the tooth brushes 30' may be withdrawn and I replaced on the frame support through the access opening 58. Upon closing of the cover members the access opening 58 disappears and the dispenser mechanism (with j the exception of knobs 24), tooth paste tube 25, and x tooth'brushes, 30 are fully concealed within the enclosure formed by the cooperating cover members. Aeration of the tooth brushes is made possible by means of the vent openings 56 in the turning knobs 24.,
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of: a frame providing a support for tooth brushes, a pair of cover members cooperable to form an enclosure for the frame support and tooth brushes, vertical hinge means on the frame serving to support the cover members for swinging movement about parallel axes, the cover members having top wall portions terminating in edges which meet along a central plane of symmetry in closed position, the said top wall portions being separated in open position to provide an access opening through which the tooth brushes on said support may be inserted or removed, and retractor means on each cover member within the enclosure engageable with portions of the tooth brushes to prevent interference with closing movement of said cover members. 1
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of: a frame providing a support for tooth brushes, a tooth paste dispenser on the frame having an apertured knob, a pair of cover members cooperable to enclose the tooth brushes and dispenser, one of the cover members having a clearance opening for reception of the apertured knob, hinge means on the frame serving to support the cover member for independent swinging movement about parallel axes, the cover members having top wall portions terminating in edges which meet in abutting relationship in closed position, the. said top wall portions being separated in open position to provide an access opening through which the tooth brushes on said support may be inserted or removed.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of: a frame providing a support for tooth brushes, a tooth paste dispenser on the frame having a pair of manually operated apertured knobs, a pair of cover members cooperable to form an enclosure for the tooth brushes and dispenser, each of the cover members having a clearance opening to receive one of the apertured knobs rebeing adapted to be secured to a wall, horizontal forwardly extending flanges integrally formed with said bracket member, said flanges beingin vertically spaced relation, and a pair of opposed cooperable cover members pivotally hinged on said flanges, said cover members providing means for compacting rearwardly the depending portions of the toothbrushing articles.
5. In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combination of: a frame providing a support for toothbrushing articles, and a rear wall portion adapted to be secured to a wall, hinge means on said frame adapted to receive a pair of pivotally opposed cooperable cover members, said cover members having means for compacting rearwardly the depending portions of said toothbrushing articles.
6. In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combination of: a frame providing a support for tooth brushes, vertical side walls on said frame supporting tooth paste dispenser means, a pair of handles for rotating the dispenser means, hinge means on said frame serving to support a pair of rotatably mounted opposed-cooperable cover members, each cover member having retractor means for moving the outside forward tooth brush handles rearwardly and laterally, each cover member having an aperture to receive one of the side walls of the frame and one of the handles respectively for the pur pose of placing said retractor means in proximate relation, to said tooth brush handles, said cover members in closed position providing a tapered front wall for the purpose of retaining rearwardly the depending tooth paste tube and the center forward tooth brush handle.
7. In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combination of: a frame providing support for tooth brushes, vertical side walls of said frame supporting tooth paste dispenser means, a pair of handles for rotating the dispenser means, hinge means on said frame for receiving a pair of rotatably opposed cooperable cover members, retractor means in the cover members for urging rearwardly and laterally the depending handles of tooth brushes; each cover member having an aperture to receive one of the side walls of the frame and one of the handles respectively for the purpose of placing said retractor means in proximate relation to said tooth brush handles, said cover members in closed position providing a tapered front wall which cooperates with said ret-ractor means to compact rearwardly the depending toothbrushing articles.

In a tooth paste dispensing mechanism, the combination of: a frame support for toothbrushing articles and tooth paste dispensing means, a pair of opposed cooperable cover members pivotally mounted on said frame, said cover members having apertures in their side walls for receiving a portion of said frame therein for the purpose of placing the side walls of cover members in proximate relation to said toothbrushing articles, said cover members havingmeans at their base to compact rearwardly said toothbrushing articles when the cover members are in closed position,

In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combinenon of:, a'frame providinga support for tooth brushes, vertical side walls' of said frame supporting tooth paste dispenser means, a pair of handles for rotating the dispenser means, hinge means on said frame, a pair of opposed cooperable cover members supported on said hinge means, each cover member having an aperture to receive one of the side walls of the frame and one of l the handles respectively, the apertures in the cover memebclose the tooth brushes and dispenser, one of the "cover members having a clearance opening for reception of said knob, hinge means on the frame serving to support thecover'members for independent swinging movement about parallel axes, the cover members having top wall portions terminating in edges which meet in abutting relationship in closed position, the said top wall portions being separated in open position to provide an access "opening through which the tooth brushes on said support may be inserted or removed.

13. In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combination of: a frame providing support for tooth brushes, vertical side walls of said frame supporting toothpaste dispenser means, a pair of handles for rotating the dispenser means, a pair of cooperable covers to enclose the frame support and the brushes, each cover member having an aperture to receive one of the side walls of the frame and one of the handles respectively, and vertical hinge means on the frame serving to support the cover members for independent swinging move'me'nt about parallel axes.
14. In a device of the class described, the combination of: a frame having a horizontal forwardly extending platform; means associated with said platform to support tooth brushes in a substantially vertical position; a pair of cover members cooperable to enclose said frame, support and the brushes; vertical hinge means on the frame serving to support the cover members for swinging movement about parallel axes, the cover members having top wall and front wall portions terminating in edges which meet throughout their length along a central plane of symmetry in closed position.
15. In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: a frame member having a horizontal forwardly extending platform; means associated with said platform to support tooth brushes in a substantially vertical position; and cover means pivotally mounted on said frame member to form an enclosure for said frame member and tooth brushes.
16. In a device of the class described, the combination of: a horizontal forwardly extending frame member serving as a support for tooth brushes and tooth paste dispensing means, a depending rear member integrally formed with said frame member adapted to be secured to a wall, a pair of cover members cooperable to enclose the tooth brushes and the dispensing means, and means to hingedly support the cover members from said frame and rear members for independent swinging movement away from closed position to provide access to the tooth brushes and the dispensing means.
17. In a tooth paste dispenser assembly, the combination of: a frame providing support for tooth brushes, vertical side walls of said frame supporting tooth paste dispenser means, a pair of handles for rotating the dispenser means, a pair of pivotally mounted coopera ble covers to enclose the frame support and the brushes, each cover member having an aperture to receive one of the side walls of the frame and one of the handfes respectively.
18. In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: an integral frame member for attachment'to a wall and providing a support for tooth brushing articles, a pair of vertically aligned apertured tabs on each side of said frame member and adjacent said wall, and a pair of opposed cooperable cover members detachably mounted on said apertured tabs for swinging movement about parallel axes.
19. In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: an integral frame member formed for attachment to a wall and having a horizontal forwardly extending platform to provide a support for tooth brushes, said frame member provided with side walls, dispensing means supported by said side walls, a pair of opposed cooperable cover members hinged on said frame member and swinging about independent parallel axes,- and means for placing the side Walls of the cover members in substantially vertical alignment and in substantially the same vertical plane with the side walls of 116 frame member when the cover members are moved to closed position.
20. In a tooth paste dispenser, the combination of: a frame member providing a support for tooth brushes and a tooth paste dispensing means at the forward edge thereof, knob means to manually operate said dispensing means, a pair of pivotally opposed cooperable cover members each having top and front Wall portions to form an enclosure for said frame, tooth brushes and dispensing means, each cover member being so constructed and arranged that in closed position the width of said Wall portions is substantially one half of the width of the frame member, and when in open position the forward edge of said wall portions terminate in rear of said knob means so as not to interfere with manual operation of said knob means.
21. Ardental accessory dispenser device comprising a frame member having a wall-engaging vertical portion and a substantially horizontal portion, accessory holding and dispensing means on said horizontal portion, a pair of complementary covers each comprising a side plate and top and front walls on said side plates, the walls of said respective covers having an abutting relation when in closed position along a central plane of symmetry and having a width not greater than substantially one-half the width of said horizontal portion, horizontal upper and lower hinge tabs at each side of said horizontal and vertical portions of the frame member, means forming a hinge pin aperture in each tab, means forming openings in the side plates adapted to receive the respective tabs, and a vertical hinge pin on the cover plate secured at one end only at one side of each said opening and having the other end spaced from the respective opposite side of the opening, said pins being removably engageable with the hinge pin apertures in the respective tabs whereby to support the covers on vertical hinge axes.
22. A dental accessory dispenser device comprising a frame member having a wall-engaging vertical portion and a substantially horizontal portion, accessory holding and dispensing means on said horizontal portion, a pair of complementary covers each comprising a side piate and top and front walls on said side plates, the Walls of said respective covers having an abutting relation when in closed position along a central plane of symmetry and having a width not greater than substantially one-half the Width of said horizontal portion, horizontal upper and lower hinge tabs at each side of said horizontal and vertical portions, means forming a hinge pin aperture in each tab, means forming openings in the side plates adapted to receive the respective tabs, and a vertical hinge pin on the cover plate secured at one end only at one side of each said opening and having the other end spaced from the respective opposite side of the opening, said pins being removably engageable with the hinge pin apertures in the respective tabs whereby to support the covers on vertical hinge axes, said horizontal portion of the frame member having cut-out portions forward of 10 adjacent tabs adapted to receive adjacent portions of the side plates when in closed position.
23. In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: a frame member providing a support for tooth brushing articles, said frame member being adapted to be secured to a wall, a cover means removably hinged on said frame member to form an enclosure for said member and articles supported thereby, said removable hinge for the cover means comprising pins in vertically spaced relationship to each other, and said pins being detachably hinged to said frame member.
24. In a device of the character disclosed, the combination of: a forwardly projecting supporting member for pendantly holding tooth brushing articles, a rear flange for said supporting member adapted to be attached to a wall, a pair of vertically aligned apertured tabs adjacent each side of said rear flange, and a pair of opposed cooperable members carried by said apertured tabs for substantially enclosing said supporting member.

In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: a frame member having a horizontal forwardly extending portion providing a support for tooth brushing articles, and a vertical portion adapted to be secured to a wall, and cover means pivotally mounted on said frame member to form an enclosure for said frame member and tooth brushing articles, the upper portions of said cover means being larger in dimension than the lower portions thereof for the purpose of moving the lower portions of said articles into more compact spacing. In a tooth paste dispenser mechanism, the combination of: an integral frame member formed for attachment to a wall and providing a support for tooth brushing articles, said bracket member provided with side walls, dispensing means supported by said side walls, a pair of opposed cooperable cover members hinged on said frame member and swinging about independent parallel axes, and aligning means for placing the side walls of the cover members in substantially vertical alignment with the side walls of the frame member when the cover members are moved to closed position, said aligning means being an aperture in each cover member adapted to receive one of said side walls, and each side edge of the frame member being cut out to receive a section of one of the covers therein, the cover members and the frame member thereby recessing partially within each other so as to enable the cover members to swing into compact closed position.
