LOUIS BLAU ER United States Patent This invention relates to waterproof body protecting ,garments and more particularly to those fashioned from light weight waterproof fabric adapted to be foldedcompactly into a small mass for storage purposes. My in- =vention consists of a waterproof raincoat with raglan sleeves over which there is an improved removably attached waterproof jacket with long shoulder portions and set-in sleeves to be used at times of heavy rain.

Although various combinations of detachable extra protective layers for the top portions of rainwear have been. previously described, such combinations often fail to keep the wearer dry when exposed to prolonged driv- The failures under prolonged exposure ing, heavy rain. occur principally at the shoulder portions of the garments, in spite of double thicknesses, because of the limitations imposed by construction. j

Under such conditions, the seams in the. conventional shoulder portions may leak, particularly where light weight fabric is used. My dual construction presents seamless double shoulder portions, with the arm hole sleeve seams of a jacket portion lying crosswise with respect to the sleeve seams'of a-coat portion and not coincidental to them. .iAs the collaris sometimesworn turned up during heavy rain to protect the neck line, .a depending transverse flap is provided to be positioned under the collar to be attached thereto by sewing it into the collar seam. 9

The type of sleeves used in the coat and jacket may be reversed, that is, the coat may have the set-in sleeves and the jacket may have the raglan sleeves.

My invention provides a garment which can also be used as a dress raincoat alone, with the jacket folded up and stored in the pocket of the coat, to be used during periods of heavy rain.

As the jacket is buttoned to a flap on the coat at the rear neck line, and the coat is buttoned to the jacket at the front, the combined coat and jacket can be handled as a one piece garment with no obstruction to the ease of wearing. The parts can be readily secured together or detached. There can be no upward creeping of the jacket regardless of arm movements to any desired elevation. Ventilation between the two layers is provided by a space between them in the back where they are buttoned together only at the top and by the air space in the front where they are buttoned together only at the top and bottom. The novel construction eliminates leakage at the neck line and on the shoulder and arm hole seam portions.

Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment illustrative of the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

My invention consists of a two layer waterproof body protecting garment having an inner waterproof coat having two or more raglan sleeve seams and a cooperating outer waterproof jacket with long shoulder portions and set-in sleeves of varying lengths depending on its intended use. This provides longitudinal sleeve seams on the coat with transverse arm hole searns on the jacket when coat and jacket are worn together. The coat. is provided with any conventional collar under which there is attached at the collar seam a depending transverse flap. The jacket is worn over the coat with'the long sleeves of the coat being positioned within the short sleeves of the jacket, the sleeve seams of one lying crosswise with respect to the sleeve seams of the other. The jacket and coat have cooperating front and back shoulder portions.

The jacket is removably attached to the coat by means of buttons being provided on the coat, matching up with button-holes on the jacket, except at the back of the neck line where the buttons are on the jacket and the corresponding button-holes are on the depending flap which overlays the jacket at the location.

Button-holes are not used on the shoulder or neck portions of the body of the coat but rather on the flap. eliminating the possibility of leakage through the coat. The buttons being on the neck line of the jacket rather than on the coat allows for smoother collar appearance when coat is worn without the jacket. 7

Each component is preferably made ofeither strong fabric coated with a waterproof material, e.g. nylon coated with polyvinyl butyral. Seams may be double stitched and then coated with a waterproof material such as a rubber or vinyl cement or heat sealed or vulcanized When made of this thin material, either one or both of the components may be folded or rolled into .a small space'for storagepurposes. When used as'an adjunct to a uniform, the question of live storage and ready access is very essential.

Referring to the drawings, the garment shown therein is composed of two major components, an inner coat 21 and an outer jacket 31. The inner coat 21 has a shoulder portion 23 with raglan sleeves 24 with sleeve seams 25 running up to the collar 26 depending from which is a transverse flap 27 attached to said collar 26 by collar seam 28. The flap 27 is provided with a multiplicity of button-holes 29.

The outer jacket 31 is fashioned from a blank of Waterproof material 10 provided with sleeve holes 11 and the sides 12 for fashioning cooperating underarm seams 36. The jacket 31 has a front shoulder portion 32 and a back shoulder portion 33 of varying lengths with set-in sleeves 34 attached to said jacket by arm hole seams 35.

The jacket 31 is provided with a multiplicity of buttonholes 39 and buttons 39.

When donned by the wearer, the jacket 31 is worn over the coat 21, the set-in sleeves 34 of the jacket 31 being slipped over the raglan sleeves 24 of the coat 21. Buttons 22 on the coat cooperate with button-holes 38 on the jacket while buttons 39 on the jacket cooperate with button-holes '29 on the transverse flap 27.

While the preferred embodiment of my invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the form, material, proportions and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention,

A two-layer, two-piece waterproof bodyprotecting garment of conventional length comprising an inner waterproof coat having an attached collar and regulation the sleeves of said coat being positioned within the sleeves of said jacket, said jacket being removably attached to sleeves and a cooperating collarless outer waterproof bolero jacket overlaying the shoulder portion and sleeve portion'of said coat and being removably attached thereto, said coat having raglan sleeves, the arm hole seams of said jacket being transverse, the adjacent sleeve seams of said coat being longitudinal, said coat having a depending transverse flap positioned and completely concealed under the back of said collar and permanently attached to the seam of said collar, said flap being provided with button holes positioned and arranged for cooperation with corresponding adjacent buttons on said jacket.

A two piece protective body garment comprising an inner waterproof raglan sleeved coat of conventional length having an attached collar and regulation sleeves and a cooperating one piece collarless outer waterproof bolero jacket having set-in sleeves of short above elbow length, the body of said coat being positioned under the body of said jacket and being removably attached thereto, the sleeves of said coat being positioned under the sleeves of said jacket, the arm hole seams of said jacket being transverse, the contiguous sleeve seams of said coat being longitudinal, said coat having a depending transverse flap positioned completely and concealed under the back of said collar and permanently attached to the seam of said collar, said flap being provided with button holes positioned and arranged for cooperation with corresponding adjacent buttons on said jacket.

A two-piece protective body garment comprising an inner waterproof raglan sleeved coat of conventional length and a cooperating outer waterproof bolero jacket 1 with short above elbow length sleeves, said coat being provided with a collar and a depending transverse flap positioned and completely concealed under said collar and attached to the seam of said collar, said coat having sleeve seams extending to said collar, said jacket being fashioned from a single blank and set-in sleeves with shoulder seams and under-arm seams only, the body of said coat being positioned under the body of said jacket,

said coat and said flap, the arm hole seams of said jacket being transverse, the sleeve seams of said coat being longitudinal, said flap being provided with button holes positioned and arranged for cooperation with corresponding adjacent buttons on said jacket.

A separable two-layer waterproof body protecting garment comprising an inner Waterproof coat of conventional lengthwith raglan sleeves and a one-piece cooperating outer waterproof bolero jacket with set-in sleeves of short above elbow length, said coat being provided with a collar and a depending transverse flap positioned and completely concealed under said collar and permanently attached to the seam of said collar, said jacket being removably attached to said coat by said flap, the seams of said set-in sleeves lying cross-wise with respect to the seams of said raglan sleeves.

A separable two-layer waterproof body protecting garment comprising an inner waterproof coat of conventional length and a one piece cooperating outer water.- proof bolero jacket with set-in sleeves of short above elbow length, said coat being provided with a collar and a depending transverse flap positioned and completely concealed under said collar and permanently attached to the seam of said collar, said flap being provided with button holes positioned and arranged for cooperation with corresponding adjacent buttons on said jacket, the front portions of said jacket being provided with button holes positioned adjacent its front edge and arranged for cooperation with corresponding adjacent buttons on said coat.
