Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEWER- BASIN.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,823, datedMarch 25, 1884.
I Application filed June 29, 1383. (No model.)
.enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO being had to the accompanying drawings, and
pertains to make and use the same, reference to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for the purpose of preventing the exit of sewergas from the ordinary sewer-basins, better adapted to be arranged upon said basins than those heretofore in use.
My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each figure, Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a section taken through line as, of a sewer-basin embodying my invention.
In said drawings, m is the sewer-basin, haw ing the coping a b, the stone b of said coping lying along the edge of the gutter c, beneath which is formed the mouth m, adapted to allow the water from said gutter c to flow therethrough into the basin m. Close to the inner edge of the stone 6 is suspended a swinging shutter, e, from a pivotal bar, d d, preferably by means of strapsf, which form eyes to receive the bar (Z d, as will be understood. WVhen suspended, the shutter in its normal position closes the mouth m, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 1; but should water from the gutter seek an entrance to the basin the force of the water will cause the shutter to swing backward and allow a passage to the said water. The bar at cl is secured in sockets cut into the copingstones am, said bar being extensible longitudinally. To adapt said bar to be thus extended, I prefer to form thereon a screw-thread, h, and threaded socket a, which, when in engagement, will allow said bar tobe secured in the sockets of the opposite copingstonesa a.
The shutter I prefer to form of galvanized sheet metal. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the sewer-basin m, having the month an, of the shutter e and extensible pivotal bar clyall arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of June, 1883.
