CONTOUR SHEET FOR MATTRESSES Filed Jan. 2, 1959 INVENTOR. A/A T mun/6 1 T T ENE Y United States Patent CONTOUR SHEET FOR MATTRESSES Nat Young, 7 37 Broadway, New York, NY.
Filed Jan. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 784,765
1 Claim. (Cl. -334) The present invention is directed to bed sheets, and more particularly to a novel construction which is particularly adapted for use on cribs or beds for infants and children.
Contour sheets for general use on mattresses of beds have been known and used. Such bed sheets consisted of a single piece of fabric, usually of rectangular shape, along the edges of which was stitched an elastic band in the stretched condition, whereby when the sheet was placed on the bed and the elastic band released, it would cause a shining of the material around the edges whereby the sheet was held taut and smooth on the mattress.
The present invention is intended and adapted to improve on the characteristics of the ordinary contour bed sheet described above, it being among the objects of the invention to provide a novel construction of bed sheet which is particularly adapted for use on cribs and the like.
It is further among the objects of the present invention to provide a contour sheet which is fabricated of several types of material stitched together so as to provide a contour sheet having improved properties.
In practicing the present invention, there is provided a flat rectangular sheet, the dimensions of which are approximately the dimensions of the upper surface of the mattress on which it is to be used. The sheet is of a special fabric wherein the upper surface is of the ordinary woven material and the under surface consists of a waterproof, synthetic plastic material bonded permanently to the woven fabric. Any suitable type of plastic material may be used such as rubber, synthetic resins and the like.
There is further provided a relatively long, rectangular strip of fabric, the width of which is somewhat greater than the depth of the mattress on which it is to be used. The length of the fabric strip is equal to the circumference of the mattress. One edge of the strip is stitched to the edges of the sheet and the two ends of the strip are stitched together. An elastic tape is stitched to the other edge of the fabric strip, the stitching being accomplished while the elastic tape is in its stretched condition. Thereby a bed sheet is formed which is proof against wetting by an infant and which fits substantially better on the mattress than the prior one-piece constructions.
The invention is more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate like parts, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a contour bed sheet made in accordance with the present invention and shown in place on a mattress;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combination, looking from below;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fabric strip constituting a part of the contour sheet, shown on a reduced scale, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse, cross-sectional view of the sheet taken along line 33 of Fig. l and exaggerated in size.
The contour sheet 1 consists of a piece of fabric 2 having the dimensions of the upper surface of the mattress. Bonded to it permanently and on the under side thereof is a synthetic plastic material 3 which is waterproof and water-resistant. A strip 4 of fabric has a width substantially greater than the depth of the mattress, the edge 5 thereof being placed against the lateral edges of sheet 2. A binding or bead 6 is folded as shown at 7 and 8 to form a tape of U-shaped cross-section to enclose edge 5 and the edges of sheet 2, and a line of stitching 9 is provided to attach strip 4 to the sheet. The opposite edge 10 of strip 4 is covered by an elastic tape 11 which is folded as shown at 12 and 13 to form a U-shaped member enclosing edge 10 of strip 4 and a line of stitching 14 is provided while tape 11 is in its stretched condition. Thereby when the sheet is placed on a mattress, the portion 10 as shown in Fig. 4, becomes folded under the lower surface of mattress 15. Upon the release of tape 11, folds or shining 16 are formed, which holds the contour sheet smoothly and firmly in position. There is no possibility of wrinkling of sheet 2 or of strip 4 so that an excellent fit is obtained which resists any accidental displacement. At the same time the Waterproofness of film 3 of plastic material insures against damage to the mattress by wetting.
There are a number of advantages inherent in the present invention. The upper surface 2 of the sheet being of usual woven material, is soft to the body and is not cold to the touch. The contour sheet is strong and form fitting. It is simple to fabricate and it is economical in that there is no waste material and the amount of labor necessary for its production is relatively small.
I claim:
A contour sheet for mattresses which consists of a flat rectangular sheet of the approximate dimensions of the surface of said mattress, said sheet having an upper face of woven fibers, the under face of said sheet having an adherent film of a liquid repellent synthetic plastic material, a long narrow substantially rectangular strip of fabric of a width greater than the depth of said mattress and of a length equal to the circumference thereof, one side edge of said strip being stitched to the edges of said sheet, an elastic tape stitched to the other side edge of said strip while said tape is in the stretched condition, said tape being stitched in folded position over said other edge of said strip.
