3 Claims. (Cl. 150-28) This invention relates to outing accessories for storing, supporting and carrying bathing suits, towels, and various other articles.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved outing accessory which will enable convenient storage and transport of articles used at a'beach and other places and which includes a conveniently carried rod or stick and a flexibly attached article-holding container, the rod adapted to be thrust into the ground for suspendmg the container in elevated position.

Another object is to provide an outing accessory 1n which the article-holding container is suspended from the rod by flexible means serving to close the container.

Still another object is to provide an outing accessory in which the flexible container-suspending means serves to adjust the position of the closed end of the container with respect to the rod and to prevent accidental opening of the container.

A further object is to provide an outlng accessory 111 which the container-supporting rod includes a detachable ground'penetrating tip member reversible to a housed position within the rod.

The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, designates a hollow rod or stick preferably formed of bamboo. The rod is here shown to be provided with metal ferrules 11 at opposite ends, the ferrules being suitably secured to the rod, as by a press fit or by cementing. The upper end of the rod is closed by a knob 12 frictionally or permanently secured thereto.

A reversible tip member 33 is detachably secured in the lower end of the hollow rod and comprises a resilient elongated body member or plug 14, such as of rubber, slightly tapered at each end and having a snug frictional fit in the rod. The plug is here shown to have an intermediate peripheral stop shoulder 15. A pointed metal ground-penetrating stem 16 is axially embedded and bonded in the rubber plug and projects from an end of the plug, the stem having a headed end countersunk within the plug. When the plug is reversed the stem is housed within the rod, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 3, the plug then presenting an exposed rubber end face, as seen in Fig. 1.

The bag may be formed in various ways, as by a flat circular piece of material having perlpherally sewn or otherwise secured thereto a tape or hem 20 to which the loops or rings are attached. A pocket-forming sheet 21 of flexible waterproof material is sewn or otherwise secured to the inner side of the bag and may be provided with a zipper-type closure 21'. The bag may contain various articles, not shown, such as a bathing suit, towel, sun glasses, and cosmetic kit.

The rod or stick 10 is provided at its upper portion with a transverse aperture 22 for slidably receiving the draw cord 13 therethrough, the cord having a knot 23 to prevent withdrawal from the rod and to determine the normal suspended position of the bag. However, the cord may be retracted to bring the mouth of the closed bag close to the rod, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to prevent accidental opening of the bag, the cord being then tied about the rod, as seen in Fig. 1. The cord is here shown to have an end loop 24 at its knotted. end to form a hand grip.

When the device is in use, the rod or stick 10 can be carried over the users shoulder, as shown in Fig. l, the closed bag being suspended from the rod at the rear of the user by the draw cord 18, and the forward portion of the rod being grasped by the user. The bag may be pulled up close to the rod by the draw cord, as seen in full lines in Fig. 1, or the bag may be lowered to the dotted line position of Fig. l, or to any intermediate position. The tip member 13 at the lower end of the hollow rod is in its inverted position, shielding the ground-engaging stem 16 within the rod. If desired, the rod may also be used as a cane, the rubber plug 14 presenting a resilient ground-contacting face. When the device is to be used at a beach, picnic area, or the like, the frictionally retained tip member 13 is reversed in the lower end of the rod to expose the ground-engaging stem 16 which is thrust into the ground, as seen in Fig. 2, thus holding the rod in generally upright stand-forming position and supporting the bag above the ground, the bag then being in its lower suspended position. Access to the interior of the bag is readily had by loosening the draw cord.

We claim:

1. An outing accessory comprising a rod adapted to be selectively body-supported and ground-supported and having a reduced ground-penetrating end, a flexible bag, and a suspension draw cord for closing said bag and flexibly connecting said bag with the upper portion of said rod to support the bag above the ground when the rod is driven into the ground, the upper portion of said rod having means slidably receiving said draw cord therethrough to bring the closed end of the bag adjacent to said rod and to suspend said bag at selected elevations.

2. An outing accessory comprising a rod adapted to be selectively body-supported and ground-supported and having a hollow lower end, the upper portion of said rod adapted to carry suspension means for an articleholding container, and a reversible tip member detachably retained in the hollow lower end of said rod, said tip member including a resilient body having a reduced ground-penetrating stem embedded therein and projecting from an end thereof, the other end of said body presenting a rubber ground-engaging face.
