United States Patent BED R TABLE COVER Albert Monier and Lisette Monier, ne Alperovitch, both of 87 Ave. de la Grande Armee, Paris (Seine), France Filed Jan. 28, 1958, Ser. No. 711,724
2 Claims. (Cl. -334) The washing and mechanical ironing of household linen are much easier when the articles are of rectangular shape without any member or arrangement running the risk of being hooked up or damaged during these operations. Moreover, the high price of fabrics makes it imperative to considerably restrict the surfaces of articles forming household linen.
The present invention seeks to produce bed or table covers easily washed and mechanically ironed, thus affording an appreciable saving in fabric.
According to the invention, the bed or table cover is characterised in that the cover element forming the bottom sheet of the bed consists of a rectangular piece of fabric whose four corners are folded so as to form two triangular flaps which come below one of the hangingdown sides securing the mattress, means being provided for fixing the various thicknesses of fabric to each other so as to produce an element entirely covering the mattress.
Buttonholes are provided along the flaps and sides, so that after folding these parts of the cover, connecting members can be positioned passing through the buttonholes.
The connecting member of the folded parts of the cover is a flexible object.
The connecting member of the folded parts of the cover is a tape.
Various other characteristics of the invention will moreover be revealed by the detailed description which follows.
Forms of embodiment of the purpose of the invention are shown, by way of examples, in the attached drawings.
Fig. l is a flat view of a bed cover element.
Fig. 2 is a view on a larger scale, of the surrounded part of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows the fold of the cover element of Fig. 1 when put into position on a mattress.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cover element on a mattress.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of a mattress provided with the cover element.
The cover element 1 in Fig. 1 assumes a rectangular shape surrounded by a continuous strip 2, delimited, for example, by a seam 3. The four corners of the element 1 comprise a particular fold to which a buttonhole arrangement is joined.
The fold of each element corner describes a rectangular strip A intended for covering one of the sides of the mattress, two triangular flaps B, C and a rectangular strip D, for covering one of the ends of the mattress.
Thus, when it is required to cover a mattress with the cover element 1 which acts as a cover for the bottom sheet, the following operation is carried out:
The element 1 is spread over the mattress, then after turning it down along the line XX on one of the ends of the mattress, the flaps B, C are placed under the strip D, as shown in Fig. 3. The line Y--Y acts as a dividing line so that the buttonholes 4a, 4b are placed as near to the mattress as possible owing to the fact that the fiap B is pressed against the mattress, then the buttonholes 4d, 40, owing to the fold, respectively cover the buttonholes 4a, 4b, and finally the buttonholes 4d, 40 are covered by the buttonholes 42, 4 so that the buttonholes 4a, 4d, 4e, and 4b, 4c, 4 are aligned with regard to each other on the same axis to enable one of the heads of double buttons to be inserted in these buttonholes. This is done at the four corners of the element 1, and,'-as stated above, a practical and efficient cover is obtained.
When the cover is in position on the mattress, only the heads of the buttons appear on the small sides of the mattress (Figs. 3, 4 and 5).
In the foregoing, a description has only been given of the positioning of one corner of the cover, the positioning of the other three being identical, seeing that folding takes place symmetrically in relation to the longitudinal axis of the bed.
The elements forming the bed cover enable easy washing and ironing to be done, as we are dealing with rectangular elements, and moreover, owing to the fact that the mattress slips in perfectly, without anything coming between the mattress and the spring-mattress, the mattress need not be lifted when making the bed, and furthermore this cover only requires a surface of fabric that is much less than the surface normally used, hence there is a great saving in raw material. The plurality of buttonholes 4 also provides for the sheet to be adjustable to different sizes of mattresses, still assuring a tight fit.
The manufacture of these elements is simple, speedy and can be mass produced. A very low cost price can thus be obtained.
In the foregoing, reference has been made to double buttons, but they can be replaced by other fastening means.
The cover 1 can be used as a table cloth.
We claim:
1. In a bed cover, a flat rectangular piece of fabric of sufiicient size to cover the top of a mattress and to hang down over the sides and ends of said mattress, a plurality ofbuttonholes in saidfabric placed along the outer edge of said fabric and adjacent each corner thereof, two buttonholes being located on the side edge of said fabric and more than two buttonholes being located on the end edge adjacent each corner of the fabric so that each corner of said fabric is foldable inwardly to form two overlapping triangular flaps which are located beneath the end edge of said fabric, said buttonholes being so placed that a buttonhole in each said triangular flap and in said hanging down end portion are in alignment when so folded with all buttonholes being located on the end edge of the mattress, and removable means for engaging said aligned buttonholes to hold the various thicknesses of fabric to each other, whereby said cover may be readily converted from the flat cloth to the contour sheet conforming to the top, side andends of said mattress.
2. In a bed cover in accordance with claim 1, wherein each corner of the fabric contains at least six buttonholes, two being located on one side edge of the cover and at least four being located on the end side of the References Ciied in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,359,526 Ray Nov. 23, 1920 2,440,891 Bockhold May 4, 1948 2,462,156 Barman Feb. 22, 1949 '4 Simpson May 27, 1952 Levin u..
