(Cl. 156-93) This invention relates to what are generally referred to as invisible-type separable fastener stringers. More partlcularly, the invention deals in a method of producing separable fastener stringers, wherein plastic scoops are cast on the beaded edge of a stringer tape at spaced intervals, with the coupling-end portions of the scoops arranged upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge, the mounting end portions of the scoops being fashioned to form 'alined apertures therein registeiing with the beaded edge of the tape.
Further, the-invention deals with a method of the charter defined, wherein the tape is reversely folded over the s1de of the scoopsopposed to the coupling portion thereof to dispose the fold of the tape in a position abutting the fold of the tape of a companion stringer when the stringers are coupled together.
Still further, the invention consists in stitching the reversely folded tape onto the scoops and onto a supplemental covering tape disposed upon the second named side of the scoops.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which,
the separate parts are designated by suitable reference 0 characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic enlarged perspective view showing two adjacent plastic scoops arranged upon the beaded edge of a stringer tape, with the tape shown in its folded position in full lines and indicating in dot-dash lines the position assumed by the tape in the casting operation; and
FIG. 2. is a section on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, indicating a small portion of a companion stringer and with part of the construction broken away and in section.
In carrying my improved method into effect, scoops cast of Delrin or other plastic material, such as the scoops of FIG. 1, are formed directly upon the beaded edge 11 of a stringer tape 12 when the tape is in the position indicated by the dot-dash lines of FIG. 1, so that the coupling end portion 13 of each scoop is formed directly upon the surface 14 of the tape. The coupling end portion 13 is integral with one side 15 of each scoop, the side 15 constituting part of the mounting end portion 16 of the scoop. The opposed side 17 of the mounting end portion 16 includes a part 18 extending a short distance onto the tape beyond the bead 11, as clearly illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The part 18, for purposes of description, can be referred to as a fold controlling part.
The sides 15, 17 are formed in the casting operation with registering apertures 19, through which the stitchings 20 pass in securing the tape 12, as well as a supplemental covering tape 21, to the sides 15, 17 of the scoop, as clearly illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The width of the tape 21 is such as to not interfere with the coupling engagement between coupling ends 13 of scoops of companion stringers. In FIG. 2 of the drawing, part of the scoop of a companion stringer is indicated at 13, the tape at 12' and the fold controlling part at 18'.
After the scoops have been formed on a stringer tape with the tape in the dot-dash position of FIG. 1, as and when it is desired to stitch the scoops in position and to add the tape 21, when the latter is desired, the tape 12 is stripped from the surface 22 of the coupling end por tion 13 and is then folded, as seen at 23, 23' around the end of the part 18, 18 and then extended along the exposed surface of the side 17, 17 of the scoop, as clearly noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing. With the tape in this position, then the stitching operation can be performed, the stitching needle, not shown, passing through the apertures 19 in the scoop 10 and this results in securing the tapes 12 and 21 in position by the stitching 20. In addition to producing the covered scoop structure, the stitching operation also serves to reinforce attachment of the scoops to the stringer tape.
In the use of the separable fastener, it will be understood that the article to which the stringer tapes areattached is disposed upon the outer surfaces 24, 24 of the tapes 12, 12. It will, thus, appear that the folded stringer tapes will effect a concealment of the scoops when the stringers are coupled together, as diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing.
The tape 21 also serves to protect the inner surface of the scoops in the process of ironing an article, to which the fastener may be attached. As heretofore indicated, in some forms of construction, the tape 21 is not employed and, in such instances, the stitching thread 20 will directly engage the side 15 of the scoops, as will be apparent.
No detail description of the coupling end portions 13 of the scoops is deemed to be necessary, as the structure of these coupling end portions forms no part of the present method.
Having fully described my invention, what I clalmas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of producing separable fastener stringers of the character described, which consists in first casting plastic scoops at spaced intervals along the beaded edge portion of a stringer tape with coupling end portions at one side of the scoops lying upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming each of the scoops with fold controlling parts at the other side of the scoops and disposed upon the other surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, then removing part of the tape from the surface of the coupling end portions of the scoops and reversely folding the same around said fold controlling parts to dispose the tape on the surface of the second named side of the scoops, and then securing the tape to said scoops.
2. The method of producing separable fastener stringers of the character described, which consists in first casting plastic scoops at spaced intervals along the beaded edge portion of a stringer tape with coupling end portions at one side of the scoops lying upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming each of the scoops with fold controlling parts at the other side of the scoops and disposed upon the other surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, then removing part of the tape from the surface of the coupling end portions of the scoops and reversely folding the same around said fold controlling parts to dispose the tape on the surface of the second named side of the scoops, and then securing the tape to said scoops by a line of stitching passed through the beaded edge of the stringer tape.
3. The method of producing separable fastener stringers of the character described, which consists in first casting plastic scoops at spaced intervals along the beaded edge portion of a stringer tape with coupling end portions at one side of the scoops lying upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming each of the scoops with fold controlling parts at the other side of the scoops and disposed upon the other surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming alined apertures in opposed sides of the scoops, then removing part of the tape from the surface of the coupling end 0 portions of the scoops and reversely folding the same around said fold controlling parts to dispose the tape on the surface of the second named side of the scoops, and then securing the tape to said scoops by a line of stitching passed through the beaded edge of the stringer tape and through said apertures of the scoops.
4. The method of producing separable fastener stringers of the character described, which consists in first casting plastic scoops at spaced intervals along the beaded edge portion of a stringer tape with coupling end portions of one side of the scoops lying upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming each of the scoops with fold controlling parts at the other side of the scoops and disposed upon the other surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming alined apertures in opposed sides of the scoops, then removing part of the tape from the surface of the coupling end portions of the scoops and reversely folding the same around said fold controlling parts to dispose the tape on the surface of the second named side of the scoops, then securing the tape to said scoops by a line of stitching passed through the beaded edge of the stringer tape and through said apertures of the scoops, arranging a supplemental cover tape on mounting end portions of the first named side of the scoops, and securing said cover tape to the scoops by said line of stitching.
5. The method of producing separable fastener stringers of the character described, which consists in first casting plastic scoops at spaced intervals along the beaded edge portion of a stringer tape with coupling end portions at one side of the scoops lying upon one surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, forming each of the scoops with fold controlling parts at the other side of the scoops and disposed upon the other surface of the tape inwardly of the beaded edge thereof, then removing part of the tape from the surface of the coupling end portions of the scoops and reversely folding the same around said fold controlling parts to dispose the tape on the surface of the second named side of the scoops, then securing the tape to said scoops, extending the fold controlling parts of the scoops onto the tape a suflicient distance to bring the folded portion of one stringer into abutting engagement with the folded portion of a companion stringer when two stringers are coupled together.

1. THE METHOD OF PRODUCING SEPARABLE FASTENER STRINGERS OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED, WHICH CONSISTS IN FIRST CASTING PLASTIC SCOOPS AT SPACED INTERVALS ALONG THE BEADED EDGE PORTION OF A STRINGER TAPE WITH COUPLING END PORTIONS AT ONE SIDE OF THE SCOOPS LYING UPON ONE SURFACE OF THE TAPE INWARDLY OF THE BEADED EDGE THEREOF, FORMING EACH OF THE SCOOPS WITH FOLD CONTROLLING PARTS AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SCOOPS AND DISPOSED UPON THE OTHER SURFACE OF THE TAPE INWARDLY OF THE BEADED EDGE THEREOF, THEN REMOVING PART OF THE TAPE FROM THE SURFACE OF THE COUPLING END PORTIONS
