Description

F. C. HUBER BABY CARRIER March 27, 1962 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Aug. 16, 1960 INVENTOR. Fe/Eaa 6. H0852 F. C. HUBER BABY CARRIER March 27, 1962 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 16, 1960 United States Patent 3,027,058 BABY CARRIER Frieda C. Huber, 1930 Vine St., Apt. 9, Cincinnati, Ohio Filed Aug. 16, 1960, Ser. No. 49,952 2 Claims. (Cl. 224-6) My invention relates to a device for carrying a young baby and in particular to a device that is removably secured to the carrier.
The principal object of my invention is provision of a carrier structure into which a baby is strapped so that it may be carried about by its parent or nurse and receive the carriers protection.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby tote which holds the baby safely in a stroller without sliding.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby tote which allows the baby to be carried without interfering with the arms of the parent or nurse.
Another object of my invention is a device to permit the parent or guardian to take the baby into a wading pool while at the same time afl'fording complete protection to the baby.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby tote having a removable heavy quilted backguard and crotch.
Another object of my invention is the utilization of gripper fasteners on the crotch closing of my baby tote to permit easy diaper changes.
This device also has features which prevent the baby from sliding down in the stroller, and which also attaches around the waist and over the shoulder of the person carrying the baby to allow freedom of both hands of the carrier. The device is made of heavy duty canvas, is completely machine washable and opens flat for easy access and packing.
Other objects of my invention and economies of construction will definitely appear from the detailed description which follows. In one instance I have accomplished the objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of my invention with a baby shown strapped in place.
FIGURE 2 is a view without the baby.
FIGURE 3 is a view showing the tote in open extended position.
FIGURE 4 is a top plan view of the device.
FIGURE 5 is a view with part of the carrying straps released.
FIGURE 6 is a section in side elevation.
FIGURE 7 is a rear view of the device.
In general my invention comprises a baby carrying device which comprises a flat base member to which is attached a second member which is folded over the first member to form a pocket. Two additional members are provided which fasten to the top of the second member and in effect form straps over the shoulders of the infant. An extension on each side of the flat base member may be folded over on the base member to form an additional support.
Straps are secured to the base member at its upper end and also at its lower end which are adapted to be secured around the neck and waist of the person carrying the infant. These straps may also be secured to a chair or other baby carrying device.
Referring to the drawings I show a base member 10 (FIG. 3) which is provided with releasable fasteners such as 11 and 12. The same or a similar type of fastener 13 is also provided at the lower end of the base member 10. A pair of straps 14 and 15 are attached to the base member 10 by stitching or other means such as at 15a or 16. A foldable second member 17 is provided which 3,027,058 Patented Mar. 27, 1962 has fasteners such as 18 and 19. Fasteners 18 and 19 are adapted to be received one by the other when the member 17 is folded on itself.
I have provided in the device illustrated in FIG. 3, three fasteners which may be selectively secured to provide for adjustment in the circumference of the opening formed when the end portions 20 and 21 are folded on member 17. The upper portion of member 17 indicated at 22, is provided with fasteners 13 which are adapted to be received by fasteners secured on member 10. The member 17 has fasteners 24 and 25 at its one end which when folded over the the base member 10 may be attached to fasteners 26 and 27 of straps 14 and 15, when said straps are folded over member 10.
Secured to the back of member 10 are straps such as 28 which are secured to the base member as by stitching such as at 29. I also provide a strap 30 which is secured to member 10 by stitching such as at 31. These straps are provided with fasteners at their ends which fastening devices may be of such construction that they are adustable, to fit various types of persons and structures. The base member 10 has two sidewardly extending members such as 32 and 33 which are adapted to be folded over member 10 and secured by fasteners such as 11 and 12 over member 17. Member 17 is folded and secured by fasteners 18 and 19 and fasteners 24 and 25 with fasteners 26 and 27.
In operation my device is folded into usable condition by placing the baby on the member 10, folding the lower extending portion 17 over the baby and fastening end portions 20, 21 together by fasteners 18, 19. Then the sidewardly extending wings members 32 and 33 are folded around the baby and secured together by their suitable fasteners such as 11 and 12. Also the straps 14 and 15 are secured to end portion 17 and fastened by fasteners 24, 25, 26 and 27. Thus a pocket is formed as is illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 for carrying the baby. The baby is thereby securely and comfortably restrained in the device. To provide for further comfort of the baby a pad such as 35 is provided which is shaped to fit the contour of member 10.
The babys diaper may be changed by removing only the lower portion of the device. The gripper fasteners provide easy diaper changes. The device is washable and gripper fasteners are provided so that adjustments to the size of the baby may be made without resewing any buttons.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for carrying a young baby about the neck and waist of a person comprising a base member, a pad adapted to fit on said base member, a second member releasably secured at one end to the lower end of said base member, said second member having sidewardly extending portions, said sidewardly extending portions adapted when folded to lie in a plane normal to said second member when in its extended position, means for adjustably securing the ends of said sidewardly extending members to each other, a pair of wing members extending from the mid-portion of said base member and adapted when folded to be secured at their end to each other, a pair of strap members secured to the upper end portion of said base member and fastenable to the lower edge portion of said second member when said second member and said strap members are folded over said base member toward each other, and a pair of straps secured to said base member which are adapted to surround the neck and waist of the carrying person and fastened.
2. A device for carrying a young baby comprising a base member, said base member formed with an upper portion having a pair of straps and a lower portion and a 3 4 pair of wing members extending one on each side from References Cited in the file of this patent said base member, a second member releasably secured UNITED STATES PATENTS to the lower end of said base member, a pair of wing members extending from said second member, and a 1'348818 Maccauum 1920 lower portion on said second member having fasteners 5 1581419 Perl May 1926 thereon whereby when said second member is folded 1,711,167 Blake 1929 over said base member after the wing members of each 2489 1828 spfmger 1949 of said lower members and base members have been 25701428 Chfiord 1951 folded and fastened said lower member is fastened to said pair of straps on the upper portion of said base member 10 FOREIGN PATENTS a pocket is formed about a young baby. 804,669 Germany Apr. 26, 1951
