Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,596, dated November 6, 1860.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. TRUMPORE, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Machine for Pressing the later from Clothes Preparatory to Drying the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my said machine partially disconnected to show the operation thereof, and Fig. 2 is a perpendicular section of the same when together and ready for operation on the clothes.

The same letters indicate like parts in both figures.

It is well known that various devices have been invented and employed to facilitate wet clothes are placed lengthwise in a trough made of canvas or other strong fabric, and the whole then wrung by means of levers suitably arranged. The first of these methods is open to the objection, that `only one piece can be properly rolled at a time, and that the pressure will greatly vary accord ing to the ariations of the texture and thickness of the materials to be pressed. The second is objected to as being too clearly allied to the hand method and subject to all its disadvantages.

To obviate these diiiculties and to pro duce a machine which shall be inexpensive, simple, durable and highly effective and advantageous in operation is the object of my invention. l

In Fig. 1, A, is the floor of the wash or drying room.

B, is a tub upon which is placed the platform or cross pin C. Resting on C, is the press tub or can E, which receives the clothes. Across the top of E, is the bar D, adjusted to rest between the cleats s, s, on either side, which in connection with the straps F, F, and the rod a, prevent the said bar from turning. Through D, passes the screw I-I. The straps F, F, are hinged at the bottom in order to permit them to be thrown back as represented in Fig. l, so that the cross bar D, and screw H, may be removed whenever it is necessary to put in or take out the clothes. C, is heldin position by means of the rods 9', 7", which are screwed into the floor as represented.

When in operation the whole machine is further braced and strengthened by means of the rod a, (see Fig. 2, which is hooked at one end into a cleat in F, and slipped at the other end on to the elbow screw p. The screw y). as well as the screws r, r, are formed in the elbow shape represented for the purpose of enabling them t o be easily screwed into the floor and also for the convenience of readily adjusting the rod jt, on 72, and the platform C, and B. The ends of C, are also slotted as represented in Fig. l, for convenience of adjustment as before set forth.

In Fig. 2, K, is a disk fitted to slide up and down the inside of E, and having the handle m, and the socket fw, in the center, into which socket the point of the screw II, lits.

The operation of my machine is as follows: The straps F, F, being thrown back into the position represented in Fig. l, the screw H, and crossbar D, is removed, the disk K, is lifted out by means of the handle m. The wet clothes are then placed into E, upon which is then placed the disk K, the cross bar D, and screw are then placed on E, and the straps F, F, with rod a, are adjusted as represented in Fig. 2. The pressure is then applied fby means of the screw, the whole machine being held as be fore described firmly upon the floor, and the water is effectually pressed from the clothes and will flow out through the holes or apertures in the tub E, and fall down into the bottom tub B. The whole machine is then again taken apart, the clothes taken plunger K, straps F, F, elbow rods r, r, out and the tub B, removed and emptied if and n, and elbow screw p, when used as and l0 desired. i i for the purposes specified.
