(Cl. 16d- 224) This invention relates to well tools and more particularly to well tools providing lateral ports in a section of a tubing string or well pipe which may be selectively closed and opened.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new and improved well tool connectable in a tubing string or well pipe and having a lateral port which may be selectively opened and closed to control uid flow between the interior and exterior of the tubing string.
It is another object of the invention to provide a well tool including a nipple connectable in a tubing string and a closing device removably positioned in the nipple for closing lateral ports of the nipple which otherwise provide for communication between the exterior and interior of the tubing string.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a well tool wherein the closing device when in position in the nipple allows the nipple to have an open bore therethrough as large as the bore of the adjacent tubing sections.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a nipple of the character described wherein the nipple is provided with a laterally projecting port lug provided with ports communicating with the exterior thereof and with an internal laterally inwardly extending passage which communicates with said ports and with the interior of the nipple.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a closing device removably insertable in the lateral passage of the ported nipple to close the ports thereof and prevent communication between the exterior and interior of the nipple. i
Still another object of the invention is to provide a running tool having a plurality of slips or gripping members for inserting the closing device in the lateral passage of the port lug.
Still another object is to provide a running tool having an inserting arm actuatable by a flexing member by means of which it is lowered into the tubing string, which arm is provided with a prong extending angularly from the arm and having means for releasably engaging the port closing device.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a running tool wherein a prong is provided on the inserting arm which extends angularly from the inserting arm and is provided with a plurality of catch members movably mounted on the prong for movement between expanded and retracted positions whereby the catch members may be selectively engaged and disengaged from the port closing device for inserting or removing the same.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the reading of the following description of devices constructed in accordance with the invention, and reference to the accompanying drawings thereof, wherein:
FIGURE l is a View, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the upper portion of the well tool showing a ported nipple installed in a tubing string and a running tool disposed therein for installing the port closing device in the nipple;
FIGURE leA is a continuation of FIGURE 1 showing the lower portion of the well tool;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of FIGURE 1;and,
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view similar to FIGURE 2 sho-wing a still different form of the port closing device and a pulling prong for removing the port closing device from the nipple.
Referring now particularly to FIGURES 1, 2 and 3, the well tool embodying the invention includes a nipple It) having an upper end threadedly connected to the lower end of an upper section 11 of a tubing string and having a lower end connected by a coupling 12 to a lower section thereof. The upper part 13 of the bore of the nipple 10 is enlarged over the bore of the adjacent upper tubing section Ii while the lower part 14 is reduced to that of the upper tubing section to provide an abrupt upwardly facing annular stop shoulder l5. An internal annular guide recess 16 having beveled upper and lower shoulders 17 and i8, respectively, is formed in the reduced bore of the nipple and is spaced below the stop shoulder I5.
A tubular sleeve 19 whose inner diameter is the same as that of the upper tubing section is positioned in the enlarged upper portion 13 of the nipple. The upper end l of the sleeve is cut at an angle to form a long side and a short side of the sleeve. A longitudinal slot 22 extends the length of the short side. The sleeve thus covers or conceals all of the supporting annular stop shoulder 15 save the portion which underlies the longitudinal slot 22 in the sleeve.
A laterally projecting port lug 23 is welded in a lateral window 2/-1 of the nipple and extends into a corresponding window 25 in the long side of the sleeve 19, the lug extending into the sleeve only as far as the inner surface thereof. A lateral passage 26 in the lug has its axis perpendicular to the axis of the nipple and opens to the interior thereof. A plurality of ports 27 provided in the wall of the port lug intermediate the open inner end and the closed outer end of the lug connect the passage 26 with the exterior of the nipple.
The running tool R for inserting a port-closing device or plug 29 in the passage 26 of the port lug 23 is adapted to be lowered into the nipple and manipulated for operation therein by means of a flexible line operating mechanism in a manner to be hereinafter described. The running tool R includes a sub 28 having a threaded upper end 3d by which it may be connected to flexible line operated tools and the flexible line. A sleeve 3l is threaded on the lower end of the sub 28 and its lower end is provided with a cross-member or web 32 intermediate its ends which extends through a longitudinal slot 34 in a core member 35 which is longitudinally slidable in the sleeve. The slot 34 is defined by the legs 36 and 37 of the core member. The core member is biased downwardly in the sleeve by means of a compression spring 38 whose upper end bears against the lower end of the sub 2S and whose lower end bears against the upper end ofthe core member 35.
An inserting arm dit has a bifurcated upper end having upstanding extensions 49a and 441/2 disposed on opposite sides of the cross member 32 which is provided with a slot 41 inclined at a slight angle to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. A transverse pin 42 extends through suitable apertures in the extensions 40a and lib of the inserting arm and extends through the slot 4l of the cross member. The guide pin 42 is held in place by staking pins 43 which extend through aligned apertures in the extensions fitta and adb and in the guide pin i2 into longitudinal slots provided in the extensions 40a and lt will thus be noted that upon relative longitudinal movement of the inserting arm and the sleeve, the inserting arm will be moved laterally in the nipple 10 by coaction of the pin 42 with the inclined sides of the slot 4l. The lower end of the core member 35 bears against the upper end of the inserting arm.
The lower end of the inserting arm is also provided with a longitudinal downwardly opening slot 45 in which is disposed a locator body 46. A large pin $7 extends through aligned apertures in the locator body .and the lower end of the inserting arm while a second smaller pin 48 rigidly secured to the locator body extends outwardly into large slots 49 in the dependent legs 56 and 51 of the inserting arm which define, the slot 45. The smaller pin 48, since it extends into large slots or apertures 49 in the legs 50 and 5i of the inserting arm, permits a limited lateral pivotal movement of the locator body about the pin 47, so that the locator body may pivot to move past obstructions in the tubing string and the inserting arm may pivot on said pin 47 while installing or removing the plug Z9. The large pin 47 is held in place by staking pins 52 which extend through aligned apertures in the guide pin and in the legs 50 .and 51 into longitudinal slots provided in the dependent legs.
The locator body carries a key 53 which is biased outwardly toward expanded position by a plurality of springs 54. The locator body is provided with upper and lower ang'es 56 and 57 which are .adapted to abut against the upper and lower ends, respectively, of the key 53 to limit its outward displacement from the locator body. The key is provided with a guide boss 58 having upper and lower beveled shoulders 59 and 60, respectively. Spaced above the guide lug is an outwardly projecting locating lug 6l having .a downwardly facing stop shoulder 62 which isadapted to engage the upwardly facing stop shoulder 15 of the landing nipple. The distance be tween the stop shoulder 62 and the beveled shoulder 59 and the distance between the stop shoulder 15 and the beveled shoulder 17 of the nipple determine in which nipple the running tool stops. A greater distance between the stop shoulder l and the beveled shoulder i7 of the nipple would permit the locator key 53 to pass through such nipple, since the stop shoulder 62 on the key could not move inwardly into engagement with the shoulder unless the distance between the stop shoulder 62 and the beveled shoulder 59 of the guide boss is equal to the distance between the stop shoulder 15 and the beveled shoulder 17 of the nipple. The locating lug 6i also has a beveled upwardly facing shoulder 64.
The key 53 is moved inwardly against the bias of the springs 54 by engagement of the key with the wall of the tubing string as the tool is lowered therein. When the landing nipple is reached, the key moves outwardly into the enlarged part 13 of the bore of the nipple. As the tool is lowered further the guide lug 58 of the key contacts the angled upper end 21 of the sleeve 19 and is cammed to the short side of the sleeve and into the slot 22, the inserting arm and therefore the complete tool R being rotated therewith. The guide lug 58 is deilected4 inwardly as its lower beveled shoulder 66 engages the stop shoulder 15 of the nipple and then moves outwardlyinto the guide recess 16 below the stop shoulder to allow the downwardly facing shoulder 62 of the locating lug to engage the upwardly facing stop shoulder 15 of the nipple to support the tool in the nipple.
The inserting arm has an intermediate section 66 which carries a prong assembly 67 which is aligned with the passage 26 of the port lug 23 when the inserting arm is supported in the nipple by the locating lug on the key. The prong assembly 67 includes a central prong 6721 which is threaded in a suitable bore 68 in the intermediate section 66 of the inserting arm and is secured thereto by a nut 69. A spacer sleeve 72 is disposed about the prong member 67a on the side of the intermediate section 66 opposite the nut 69 and may also be threaded. The prong member 67a is provided with an annular camming surface 73 which provides an annular shoulder 74 against which the sleeve 72 abuts. A second smaller beveled surface 75 is provided on the outer end of the prong member 67u which forms an annular shoulder 76 which is spaced from and faces the annular shoulder 77 to form an annular recess 73. A pair of semi-cylindrical slips or catch members Sil are held on the prong member by a resilient ring 8i which is received in suitable recesses 82 of the slips. The slips have semi-annular flanges 84 which are received in the annular slot 78 of the central member whereby the opposite ends of the flange are adapted to abut the shoulders 77 and 76 to limit the longitudinal movement of the slips on the central member, the beveled inner surfaces 86 and 87 of the slips are adapted to engage the beveled surfaces 73 and 75, respectively, of the central member whereby the slips 60 are cammed outwardly upou movement of the Slips to the left (FIGURE 2) on the central member.
The slips are provided with shoulders, serrations 0r teeth having beveled shoulders 91 and abrupt shoulders 92. The beveled shoulders 91 are inclined outwardly and to the right (FIGURE 2) and are adapted to engage the grooved inner surface 94 of the port closing plug 29. The port closing plug 29 is provided with a pair of sealing means 96 and 97 which seal with the port lug on opposite sides of the ports 27 whereby the ports Z7 are closed when the port closing plug 29 is in position in the passage 26 of the port lug preventing ow of fluid from between the interior and exterior of the nipple.
lt will be now be apparent that when it is desired to insert the port closing plug 29 in the port lug 23, the running tool R is prepared by providing the intermediate section 66 of the inserting arm with the inserting prong assembly 67 having the inserting slips 80 upon which is telescoped the port closing plug 29, slips 30 being movable toward each other to permit such placement of the port closing plug 29 thereon.
The inserting arm is now in its lowermost position relative to the sleeve 31, the spring 33 biasing it downwardly so that the pin 42. is located in the lowermost end of the inclined slot 4l of the cross member 32. As a result, the outer end of the inserting prong assembly 67 is disposed inwardly of the outer surface of the locator body 46 so that the port closing plug 29 does not engage any obstructions in the tubing string as the inserting tool R is lowered through the tubing string and into the nipple 10.
When the running tool is positioned in the landing nipple, by the action of the key 53, in the position shown in FIGURE l, downward jars are imparted to the sub 2S by the usual ilexible line operating tools to which the upper end of the sub is secured whereby the sleeve 31 is moved downwardly relative to the inserting arm 49 to move the inserting arm laterally toward the port lug 23. As a result, the port closing plug 29 on the inserting prong assembly 67 is inserted into the lateral bore or passage 26 of the port lug 23. Such lateral movement of the plug 29 into the passage 26 is accomplished by a plurality of jars, each jar moving the plug 29 a little further outwardly into the passage 26, the inclined surfaces 91 of the slips or catch members 80 permitting such movement of the plug, while their abrupt shoulders 92 prevent movement of the plug in the opposite direction on the slips due to the action of the beveled surfaces 86 and 87 of the slips which coact with the beveled surfaces 73 and 75, respectively, of the prong 67. Such jarring action is continued until lateral movement of the inserting prong assembly 67 moves the port closing plug 29 into the position shown in FlGURE 2. An upward pull on the running tool then moves the inserting arm inwardly causing the inserting assembly 67 to pull out of the plug 29, the inclined surfaces 91 of the slips camming the slips inwardly past the corrugations of the plug bore. The running tool R may then be removed by pulling it upwardly. The downwardly and outwardly Vbeveled shoulders 64 and 59 of the keys 53 cam the key 53 inwardly upon meeting downwardly facing obstructions in the tubing string.
A guide shoe 30% is located in the landing nipple 10 near the upper end thereof and is held in place by a weld or other suitable means 'to hold the sleeve 31 against lateral movement during jarring operations. The upper end of the sleeve 19 also assists in preventing such lateral movement of the sleeve 31.
When it is desired to remove the plug 29 from the port lug 23 in order to permit communication between the interior and exterior of the nipple, a pulling or retrieving prong 102 is secured to the intermediate section 66 of the running tool of the inserting arm 40 of the running tool R. The pulling prong is similar to the inserting prong 67 except that the slips or catch members 103 have the inclined surfaces 1114 of their teeth facing in the opposite direction, as shown in FIGURE 4, and having beveled internal surfaces 105 and 106 engageable with corresponding beveled surfaces 107 and 1118, respectively, of the pulling prong which move the slips outwardly upon relative movement of the slips to the right of the pulling prong as seen in FIGURE 4. It will thus be seen that lateral movement of the inserting arm, such as is imparted to the inserting arm by jars imparted to the sub 28, will cause the pulling prong and the slips to move outwardly and into the grooved bore of the port closing plug 110. After the slips 103 are fully positioned in the port closing plug 110, upward movement of the running tool R causes the inserting arm to again move inwardly toward the position shown in FIGURE 1l whereupon the abrupt shoulders 111 of the slips engage in the grooves 111a of the plug 1111 to cause the plug to be pulled out of the passage 26 for removal out of the nipple 13 with the running tool R.
It will be noted that the port closing plug 110 diters from the port closing plug 29 in having an annular outer recess 112 in which is held an annular sealing sleeve 113 provided withannular external tlanges 114 and 11401 which bear against the walls of the passage 26 on opposite sides of the ports 27. A split ring 115 extending about the sealing sleeve 113 between the end ilanges 114 and 114m thereof holds the resilient sealing sleeve 113 in place in the recess 112.
It will now be seen that a new and improved well tool has been illustrated and described which includes a nipple connectable in a tubing string provided with a passage which extends at an angle from the longitudinal passage of the nipple and that such passage is provided with ports which open to the exterior of the nipple whereby communication may be had between the interior and the exterior of the nipple. It will further be seen that such passage is `disposed to the side of the longitudinal passage of the nipple whereby a plug may be inserted in the passage to prevent communication between the interior and exterior of the nipple without obstructing the longitudinal passage of the nipple whereby other tools may be run through the nipple.
It will further be seen that the offset passages are provided by port lugs which are affixed to the nipple by any suitable means, as by welding, and project outwardly therefrom in order to permit the holding of a plug in the passage without the plug obstructing the longitudinal passage of the landing nipple.
lt will further be seen that new and improved running tools have been provided for inserting or installing the plugs in the port lugs passages and for retrieving or removing the port closing plugs therefrom by the use of iexible line tools which impart jars to the running tools.
It will further be seen that the running tool includes an inserting arm, which is moved laterally to move an inserting or a pulling prong, as the case may be, laterally outwardly into the lateral passage 26 of the port plug to insert or remove the port closing plug therein or therefrom.
It will be further seen that in all modifications of the running tool the inserting and retrieving operations are performed by means of flexible line tools which impart downward jars to the running tools.
It will further be seen that a landing nipple is provided with orienting means, such as the sleeve 19 for orienting the running tool in the landing nipple so that the plug inserting and removing means is properly aligned with the angled passage of the port lug 2&3.
The foregoing description of the invention is explanatory only and changes in the details of the construction illustrated may be made by those skilled in the art, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
