CARRIAGE CHAIR Filed March 22, 1960 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 3,083,053 CARRIAGE CHAIR Clarence A. Dorsey, 821 Jennings St., Bronx, NY. Filed Mar. 22, 1960, Ser. No. 16,393 1 Claim. (Cl. 297-153) This invention relates to vehicles and, more particularly, to a combined carriage chair.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination carriage chair for use by handicapped persons and children which will provide for the handling, feeding, and recreational activities of such occupants in any desired location.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a completely self contained carriage chair having adjustable seat means, a foot rest, a tray, and article storage devices which will facilitate the handling and feeding of all kinds of handicapped and young children in a simple and convenient manner, as well as with utmost comfort to the occupant.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a carriage chair of the type described in which the various retractable parts are readily movable to a storage position, so that the device can be stored in a relatively compact area when not in use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a carriage chair of this type which can be manufactured in large quantities at a relatively low cost, and which is simple and attractive in apearance.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a carriage chair made in accordance with the present invention in a position ready for use;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a tray forming a part of the present invention;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of certain parts of the device shown in FIGURE 1, with the parts in a retracted position;
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 1, with the tray removed and the seat in an adjusted position;
FIGURE 5 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIGURE 4;
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of cer tain operating parts of the present invention;
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary bottom perspective view of still another part of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing, a carriage chair 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main body member 12 supported upon wheels 14 for rollable movement along a supporting surface. The rear end of the main body member 12 is provided with a closure 16 that is hingedly mounted upon hinges 18 for selective movement between a normally closed and open position by means of a handle 20. The interior 22 of the main body member 12 serves as a storage compartment for various equipment and accessories.
The top or" the base of the main body member 12 includes a supporting surface 24 upon which a backrest 26 is pivotally mounted upon a hinge 28 for selective movement between any one of a number of angularly adjusted positions under the control of a latch bar 30 that is receivable within spaced apart indents 32 in the sides 55 of the main body member. The supporting surface 24 and backrest 26 is covered with a cushion 36 which also eX- tends onto an adjustable foot board 38 which may be secured in the collapsed position shown in FIGURE 5 and the open position shown in FIGURES 1 and 4 by means of collapsible braces 42. When this extension 38 is not in use, an extensible platform 44 may be withdrawn from a guideway 46 in the main body member 12 and maintained in a horizontal position by a depending leg 48 that is normally housed within a compartment 52 in the bottom of the panel 44. Thus, the occupant may selectively use the foot board 44 or the extension 38, depending upon the position and particular activity to be indulged in.
The upper sides 55 of the main body 12 are provided with a plurality of vertically spaced apart guideways 54, each of which slidably receive tongues 56 integral with a tray 58, in order to support the tray 58 in a vertically adjusted position upon the main body member 12. The facing central portion of the tray 58 is provided with a cutout 60 for snugly fitting the body of the occupant of the chair, whereas an annular frame 62 maintains any articles placed upon the tray 58 against falling onto the floor.
Racks 64 secured to the main body member 12 may be used to carry books 66, papers, or the like for the convenience of the occupant.
It will now be recognized that in actual use, all of the parts of the present invention may be readily moved to a collapsed storage position in order to occupy a minimum amount of space when the device is not in use. However, each of the parts may be readily moved to their extended positions in order to provide the occupant of the chair with the utmost comfort and convenience during use.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
An invalid carriage chair comprising a hollow main body providing a storage compartment, closure means hinged to the back of the main body, wheels connected to the bottom of the main body, to support the body for movement along a surface, an adjustable seat carried by the main body, a retractable shelf for a foot rest and having a supporting leg member pivotally connected thereto, opposite sides of said body defining -a plurality of vertically spaced apart grooves as track means for slidably supporting a tray, and a tray with a substantially rectangular plate having a pair of spaced longitudinally extending tongues slidably received in the grooves and with said grooves supporting the tray.
