Description

May 28, 1 J. E. A. PELLETIER 3,090,972
DOUBLE BED MATTRESS Filed Aug. 21, 1961 3,090,972 DQUBLE BED MATTRESS Joseph Edward Alfred Peiletier, 244 W est Lane, Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Filed Aug. 21, 1961, Ser. No. 132,799 2 Claims. (Cl. 5-352) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattress.
Mattresses are well known sirice several can be found in most homes.
Broadly, all mattresses have the same general construction with the exception that some are felt filled, others are spring filled, depending upon the purchase price but all comprise a single unit adapted to cover the entire width of the spring, and whether more or less expensive all will eventually sag in the center and cause considerable discomfort well known to users of double beds.
In order to add considerable comfort to users of double beds 1 have devised the present invention. Broadly, it comprises a mattress made up of two sections joined together by the canvas cover or envelope. It is to be understood that the present design can be manufactured for felt filled, or spring filled mattress, or any other type of material. The mattress can also be made as a single unit having a longitudinal opening medially thereof.
The primary object of the invention is therefore the provision of a double bed mattress which provides for users of double beds the comfort of a single bed.
A further object is that the comfort of a single bed for two users is provided with a single set of sheets and covers.
Another important object is the provision of an article as set forth which is considerably less expensive to produce than a pair of single or twin bed mattresses.
With these and other objects that may appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a double bed mattress constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of one-half of the mattress before the canvass covering pins two identical sections as shown.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the both views, it will be seen the invention comprises a mattress which provides for users of double 3,09%,972 ?a.tented May 28, 1953 beds the comfort of a single bed at considerable saving both monetary and in space. Since several homes have rooms that are too small for the installation of twin beds, the mattress herein described will be greatly appreciated since it provides single bed comfort to users of double beds.
The mattress is made up of two identical sections 5 such as shown in FIGURE 2, each section being provided with breathers 6 to provide air circulation within each section of said mattress. In order to definitely define each section a space 7 is provided therebetween on the assembledunit although the extremities 8 of each section are butted together beiore the final covering is applied and sewn.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a new and novel mattress which provides, to users of double beds, the comfort of single beds, but eliminates the higher cost of single bed beddings, such as sheets, and blankets.
It is believed that the construction and advantages have been fully set forth and that further detailed description is not required.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, it is to be understood that minor modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
I claim:
1. A mattress for a double bed comprising a pair of elongated sections, each section having side and end walls and arranged in side-by-side relation with the confronting side Walls in abutting relation at their ends and olfset inwardly intermediate their ends to provide an open gap between the sections for the circulation of air.
2. A mattress for a double bed comprising a pair of elongated sections having side and end walls, one side wall of each section having an inwardly olf-set portion intermediate its ends, breathers mounted in the off-set portions of the wall of each section, said sections being disposed in side-by-side relation with the oif-set portions of the side walls in opposed spaced relation and the ends of the side walls in abutting relation.
