Description

June 11, 1963 w. w. CANTRELL CHILD'S SLEEPING GARMENT Filed 001:. 4, 1960 INVENTOR W/LL/FM W/QMH WELL,
BY w
ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,092,839 CHILDS SLEEPING GARMENT William W. Cantrell, Winston-Salem, N.C., assignor to The P. H. Hanes Knitting Company, Winston-Salem, N.C., a company of North Carolina Filed Oct. 4, 1966, Ser. No. 60,472 4 Claims. (Cl. 2--83) This invention relates to the improvements in a childs sleeping garment, particularly of the type having legs terminating with enclosed foot portions. In garments of this type which previously have been made the sole of the foot portion was joined to the upper foot portion at the edges of the sole by a line of stitching joining edges of the sole to the upper portions along the seam. In order to provide a sufiiciently strong joint at the seam it was necessary to have exposed stitching threads running longitudinally along each side of the seam and a large number of exposed stitching threads running transversely back and forth along the seam on the outer side of the garment. At this particular seam in the garment the exposed threads were subject to continual wear by scufiing of the wearers foot and also were subject to wear during agitation by washing.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved, reinforced seam at the periphery of the sole in garments of the type described. The improved reinforced seam according to my invention provides better resistance to scufling and also improves the appearance of the garment.
In the improved garment according to my invention the peripheral edges of the sole abut or nearly abut against the edges of the upper foot portions, which are extensions of the garment leg, and a reinforcing strip overlaps the abutting edges along the outer side of the seam. A line of stitching joins the reinforcing strip to both of the abutting edges thereby joining the seam. By using this reinforcing strip the amount of exposed stitching on the outside of the garment necessary to join the seam is greatly reduced. This reduction in exposed thread together with the additional strength provided by the strip itself greatly improves the scuff resistance of the seam. Using the improvement according to my invention a better looking foot portion of the garment is provided. The strip extending around the sole along the seam gives the foot portion an appearance somewhat similar to a mocassin.
The object and advantages of my invention will be more clearly understood by reading the following detailed description with reference to the drawings.
in the drawings:
FIGURE 1 shows a childs sleeping garment having the improved foot portion according to my invention.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view of the foot portion of the garment showing the inner side of one foot portion.
FIGURE 3 is a view of a section of reinforcing strip showing the underside of the strip which is sewn against the seam, according to my invention.
FIGURE 4 is a view of a portion of the reinforcing tape used in accordance with my invention showing the exposed side of the tape with stitching.
FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view of the seam according to my invention with stitching shown diagrammatically.
Referring to FIGURE 1 the lower portion 8 of a childs sleeping garment is provided with legs 10 each of which terminates its lower end with an enclosed foot portion 12. The material of the leg 10 is extended at the lower end of the leg to provide flaps which form the upper front members 14 and upper heel members '16 of the foot portion. Conveniently, but not necessarily, the
material of each leg 10 is joined at an inseam 18 extending along the length of the inside of the leg 10.
On each foot portion 12 a sole 20 is attached to the edges of the upper front and upper heel members at a seam 22 extending around the peripheral edge of the sole 20.
Along the seam 22 the edges of the upper front member 14 and the upper heel portion 16 abut against the edges of the sole 20. A strip member 24 extends longitudinally along the seam at the outer side of the garment overlapping the edges of the sole and the edges of the upper members at the seam. The strip is sewed by stitching which joins the reinforcing strip 24 to the upper members 14 and 16 and also joins the reinforcing strip to the sole. In a preferred embodiment of my invention the tape begins with one end 26 at or near the inseam 18 of the leg. The tape 24 extends around the periphery of the sole and is sewed across the one end 26 and extends up the inseam 18 for a short distance. The stitching of the inseam is sewed across the end portion 28 of the strip to cover and hold down the end 28. Thus both ends of the reinforcing tape are covered to provide a neat appearance. The reinforcing tape 24 may be made of a strip of material the same as the material used for making the legs and upper portions of the garment 8. As shown in FIGURE 3 the edges of the strip 24 are turned in against the side of the strip to be placed against the seam. When the strip is sewed along the scam the outside of the strip appears as shown in FIGURE 4 with parallel interrupted lines of stitching 30. Because of the additional strength provided by the reinforcing strip it is not necessary to have exposed transverse threads along the seam.
In FIGURE 5 a cross-section of the seam 22 is shown. At the seam 22 the edges of the upper member 14 and the sole 20 abut and the strip 24 extends across the seam as shown. Stitches 3i join the reinforcing strip 24- to the upper member 14 and the sole 20, as shown. It is preferred to provide two rows of stitching along each side of the seam so that the strip is joined to each member by two rows of stitches. It is to be understood that the stitching draws the reinforcing strip closely against the seam, and the drawing in FIGURE 5 is merely diagrammatic to provide a better understanding.
A preferred material for the reinforcing strip is knit cotton jersey, which also may be the material used for the body of the garment. This jersey material is particularly useful in the reinforcing strip because it permits the exposed parallel threads of the stitching to be embedded below the outermost exposed surface of the knit material. This permits the threads to be protected from wear by abrasion somewhat more than with a material having a hard surface.
A preferred material for the sole of the foot portion of the sleeping garment is a fabric having an outer surface of scuff resistant plastic coating and an inner surface lined with soft material such as cotton flannel or the like. By using a single ply of such material for the sole the outer surface is strong enough to resist scuffing and the inner surface next to the wearers foot is soft.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention the toe covering portion of the upper front member of the foot portion is reinforced by providing an extra layer of the material used for the body of the garment. In this embodiment the two layers at the toe of the upper front member are joined to the sole at the edges just the same as if both layers constituted a single layer. That is the stitching joining the reinforcing strip to the upper front member at the seam also passes through the reinforcing portion of the upper front member at the seam.
Various modifications and changes may be made in the 3 garment described above without departing from the scope of my invention which is indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a childs sleeping garment having legs terminating in enclosed foot portions, the improvement comprising extended portions of the garment leg having bottom unsewn edges and forming upper front and upper heel members of the foot enclosure, a fabric sole having unsewn edges peripherally disposed adjacent to the unsewn edges of the said extended portions, a reinforcing strip covering both said edges on the outside and overlapping the extended portions and the sole by beginning at one end thereor and extending around the periphery of the foot portion, at least one row of stitching joining the strip to the extended portions, and at least one other row of stitching joining the strip to the sole the reinforcing strip further being sewn across the said one end and extending upward therefrom along the garment leg for a short distance and being sewn against the leg by said rows of stitching along said distance.
2. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the edges of said extended portions of'the garment leg abut the edges of the sole.
3. The improvement according to claim 1 and further comprising inseam stitching on said leg wherein the portion of the reinforcing strip extending along the leg extends along the inseam of the leg and the inseam stitching is sewed across a portion of the said distance along the inseam.
4. The improvement according to claim 1 wherein the reinforcing strip comprises a knit material whereby the said rows of stitching are embedded below the outermost surface of the material.
