(Cl. 229-54) The present invention relates to an improved paperboard shopping bag and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Generally, the present invention comprises a continuation-in-parit of my co-pending application entitled Paperboard Shopping Bag, filed December 8, 1960, and bearing Serial No. 74,650, and while possessing many of the advantages of said co-pending application additionally provides means whereby a greater quantity of goods may be carried therein and further provides novel means whereby the device, when in use, may be mounted in an upright position upon the ground or floor due to the provision of novel integrally formed leg members which cooperate with a plurality of skid members. In the present invention as in the invention covered in my co-pending application, the device is formed of a single piece of paperboard or the like divided by suitable fold lines into a rear panel, a front panel, pairs of side panels, a connector strip and a bottom panel. The device is such that it is only necessary to interconnect one of the side panel members with the connector strip by means of staples or the like whereupon the bag may be collapsed into a minimum of space along certain of its fold lines and in such manner that great numbers of the devices may be stacked likewise in a minimum of space. The bag may be placed in condition for use by the simple expedient of moving the front and rear panels away from each other and moving the bottom panel along a convenient fold line until the free end thereof engages with the remainder of the device in such manner that it forms the bottom of a :bag which now may either rest upon a floor or the like in a vertically extending direction or may be moved along the floor or ground by means of convenient hand holds with the aforesaid skid members in groundengaging position.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for supporting the same in upright condition.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which, when not in use, will occupy a minimum of space.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel leg members forming parts of the invention.

Still another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel, integrally formed bottom panel forming a part of the invention.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which lends itself to display advertising which may be carried conveniently there- Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification (taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a bag constructed in accordance with the present invention and including a front panel 10 to one edge of which is integrally connected 2. side panel member 11 which, in turn, is integrally connected a side panel member 12 which, likewise in turn, is integrally connected with a rear panel 13 to the opposite side of which are successively interconnected side panel members 14 and 15.

To that side of the panel 10 opposite that to which the panel member 1 1 is connected, there is integrally connected a fastening panel 1 6.

To the lower edge of the panel 10 there is integrally connected along a horizontal fold line 17 a bottom panel 18 having an integrally formed tongue 19 central-1y positioned on the free edge thereof.

The panels 11, 12, 14 and 15 have their respective lower edges 20, 21, 22 and 23 extending in the same plane as the fold line 17 between the panels 10 and 18.

A series of laterally spaced skid fingers 24 formed integrally with (the lower end of the panel 13 and extend downwardly therefrom. Adjacent the lower end of the panel 13 there is provided a slot 25 which extends in the same plane as the edges 20-23 and the fold line 17.

Centrally positioned in each of the panels 10 and 13 adjacent the upper end thereof are hand hole openings 26 and 27.

In that form of the invention illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 6, instead of the single tongue 19 and single slot 25, there is respectively provided a series of laterally spaced tongues 19a and a series of laterally spaced slots 25a.

In operation, in either form of the invention, it will be apparent that the attaching strip 16 is first glued or otherwise attached in any suitable manner as by staples or the like to the panel 15 whereupon the panels 11 and 12 and the panels 14 and 15 are collapsed inwardly in the manner indicated in FIGURES 2 and 3. Pluralities of the devices may then be stacked for later use. When it is desired to utilize one of the devices, it is only then necessary to move the panels .10 and 13 away from each other whereupon the side panels 11 and 12 and the side panels 14 and 15 will be extended in the manner illustrated in FIGURES 4 to 6, inclusive. The bottom panel 18 may then be moved upwardly and the tongue 19 forced into the slot 25 or, in the alternate form of the invention, \the tongues 19a be inserted into the slots 25a.

It will also be seen that there is provided an integrally formed foot member 28 which extends downwardly from the panel 16 and a like foot member 29 which extends downwardly from the panel 11. The foot members 28 and 29 have their lower edges in the same plane as the lower edges of the skid fingers 24. It will also be apparent that the foot members 28 and 29 lie immediately adjacent the sides of the panel 18.

When the device is in its opened condition with the bottom member connected by tongue and slot as aforesaid, all as illustrated in FIGURES 4 to 6, inclusive, it will be seen that the device may rest in a vertical position 0 utilizing the skid fingers 24 and the foot members 28 and 29 to support the same. It will also be apparent that, upon loading articles into the device, the same may be grasped iprefera'hlylby the hand hold 27 and the same then tilted in such manner that only the skid fingers 24 are in contact with the floor or ground whereupon the same maybe moved along the floor or ground to transport variouswarticles fromplace to place.

Itwill also be noted that the . foot'members 28 and 29 and particularly the skid fingers '24 may be impregnated with a stifiening and wear-resistance substance'such: as a ,polyethylene orithe like.

While but two forms of the invention have been shown vand described herein, it-Will-be readily apparent to those =skilledin the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the=scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A rectangular shopping bag formed from a single blank of paperboard and comprising a front panel, a

rear panel,-side panels interconnecting adjacent side edges of-said iront and rear-panels, a bottom panel integrally hingedly-connectedto said lower, portion of said-rear panel, a series of relatively narrow and Widely spaced :skid-fingers integrally formed "on and extending downwardly from the lower edge of said :front panel, an 'integral foot member extending downwardly from each of said sidepanels at areas iadj-acent'either side of said rear panels, and means for locking the free edge of said hottom -panel with said front panel, said skid fingers being of substantially equal lengths and underlying substantially the entire Width of said bag, and the upper portion of said front panel having an integral handle.

2. A shopping bag according .to claim 1, at least portions of said skid fingers and said foot members being impregnated witha Wear resisting and stifiening material.

3. A shopping bag according to claim 1, said side panels being vertically medially scored so as to be inwardly 'foldable to permit collapsing of said bag with said front and rear panels lying in close coextensive substantial parallelism prior. orsu'bsequent to use thereof.

1. A RECTANGULAR SHOPPING BAG FORMED FROM A SINGLE BLANK OF PAPERBOARD AND COMPRISING A FRONT PANEL, A REAR PANEL, SIDE PANELS INTERCONNECTING ADJACENT SIDE EDGES OF SAID FRONT AND REAR PANELS, A BOTTOM PANEL INTEGRALLY HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO SAID LOWER PORTION OF SAID REAR PANEL, A SERIES OF RELATIVELY NARROW AND WIDELY SPACED SKID FINGERS INTEGRALLY FORMED ON AND EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY FROM THE LOWER EDGE OF SAID FRONT PANEL, AN INTEGRAL FOOT MEMBER EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY FROM EACH OF SAID SIDE PANELS AT AREAS ADJACENT EITHER SIDE OF SAID REAR PANELS, AND MEANS FOR LOCKING THE FREE EDGE OF SAID BOTTOM PANEL WITH SAID FRONT PANEL, SAID SKID FINGERS BEING OF
