Phipps, Holliston, Mass., assignor to Denmson Manufacturing Company, Framingham, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Filed May 4, 1962, Ser. No. 192,575 Claims. (Cl. 117-4) For keeping a roll of newsprint or other sheet material from unwinding it has been proposed to employ so-called paster tabs which are gummed on different portions of their opposite sides for adhesion to the inner side of the end of the roll on one side of the tab with a portion of the tab projecting beyond the end of the roll for adhesion to the roll on the other side of the tab.
Objects of the present invention are to provide a paster tab which is simple and economical to produce and which can be torn more quickly and easily when the roll of material is to be unrolled, and to provide a method of making tabs which is quick and economical and with which the adhesive may be applied to different areas of the opposite sides of the tabs with conventional gumming machines without cross striping, that is without striping the strips lengthwise on one side and crosswise on the other side.
According to this invention the paster tab comprises a base strip having a long section extending the full length thereof and a side section projecting laterally from the long section at one end of the tab so that said one end is wider than the other narrower end, one side of the tab being adhesive only on said side section and the other side being adhesive only on said long section.
In a more specific aspect of the invention the paster tab has a central section extending the full length thereof and side sections projecting laterally from the central section at one end of the tab so that the aforesaid end is wider than the other end, one side of the tab having adhesive only on the aforesaid sections and the other side having an adhesive coating over its entire area, and the aforesaid coating being covered with non-adhesive material throughout the wider end, whereby the aforesaid one side of the tab is adhesive only on the aforesaid sections and the other side is adhesive only on the narrow end of the tab. In this aspect the adhesive is preferably ordinary gum such as used on labels and postage stamps of the water-remoistenable type and the aforesaid non-adhesive material is waterproof ink. In the preferred embodiment the tabs have notches in the corners between the wide and narrow ends with the notches extending into the wider ends.
In another aspect of the invention one side of the tab has adhesive only on said side sections and the other side has adhesive only on said central section. In this aspect the adhesive is preferably pressure sensitive.
The invention also involves a method of making paster tabs which comprises applying to one side of an elongate strip a stripe of adhesive extending lengthwise of the strip, applying to the other side of the strip an adhesive coating which is in part disposed opposite the aforesaid stripe and in part offset from the stripe crosswise of the strip, applying over the adhesive coating non-adhesive patches which are spaced lengthwise of the strip with sections therebetween which remain uncovered, and from the strip cutting tabs each of which includes one of the aforesaid patches and that part of one of the aforesaid sections which is offset from the aforesaid stripe. Preferably the non-adhesive patches comprise waterproof ink. While the application of the non-adhesive patches and the cutting of the tabs from the strip may be performed concomitantly in the same machine, preferably they are performed successively in different machines or at different stations in the same machine.
An alternative method comprises applying to one side of an elongate base strip a stripe of adhesive extending lengthwise of the strip and of less width than the width of the strip, applying to the other side of the strip a second stripe of adhesive which is oifset from said first stripe crosswise of the strip, and from the strip cutting tabs one end of which extends across both of said stripes and the other end of which extends across only one of the stripes. In this aspect the method preferably comprises applying to one side of an elongate base strip two lateral stripes of adhesive extending lengthwise of the strip with a space therebetween, applying to the other side of the strip a central stripe which is confined to the area opposite said space, and from the strip cutting T-shapedtabs each of which extends across all of said stripes at the wide end with said lateral stripes cut away at the narrow end.

In FIGS. 1 to 9 two stripes of adhesive 1 are applied to one side of a paper strip 2 by any suitable means, as for example by means of an ordinary coating machine. FIG. 3 illustrates the step of coating the other side of the strip 2 with a layer of adhesive 3 covering the entire width of the strip. FIG. 5 illustrates the step of printing the non-adhesive patches 4 over the adhesive coating 3. The patches 4 may comprise waterproof printers ink and may be applied withordinary printing machines.
After the strip has been coated as aforesaid the tabs are cut out along the outline indicated in FIG. 7. Thus each tab comprises a narrow end 6 and a wide end comprising laterally projecting side sections 7, the side sections having exposed adhesive on one side of the tab and the narrow end 6 having exposed adhesive 3 on the narrow end of the tab.
One use of the tab is illustrated in FIG. 9 where 8 represents a roll of paper and 9 the outer end of the roll, one side of the narrow end 6 adhering to the outside of the roll 8 and the other side of the tab adhering to the inside of the overlapping end 9 throughout the areas of the side sections 7. Thus the end 9 of the roll of paper does not adhere to the tab throughout the central section of the tab. Consequently a fingernail or knife blade may be inserted between the central section of the tab and the overlapping end of paper to pull the end away from the roll, thereby tearing the tab lengthwise from the corners 10 between the narrow and wide ends of the tab lengthwise of the tab, leaving the central section of the tab adhering to the roll 8 and the side sections 7 adhering to the end Patented June 23, 1964 3 9. By notching the corners as indicated at in FIGS. 7 and 9 this tearing operation is facilitated.
The modification shown in FIGS. 10 to 16 is similar to that shown in FIGS. 1 to 9 and corresponding parts are correspondingly numbered. However the adhesive layers 11 and 13, corresponding to 1 and 3 of FIGS. 1 to 9, are pressure sensitive and they are covered with release sheets 20 and 21, the sheet 21 being split centrally along the line 22. Moreover the adhesive layer 13 is confined to the central portion of the paper ribbon 12 instead of extending all the way across the ribbon as does the corresponding layer 3 of the first embodiment. The tab 17 shown in FIG. 13 is made by cutting the strip of FIG. 10 along the line 16.
The tab of FIGS. 10 to 16 is used like that of FIGS. 1 to 9 except in that the release sheets 20 and 21 are peeled oil before the tab is applied to a roll of paper as shown in FIG. 15. After the tab has been torn to unroll the paper the parts of the tab remain in the positions shown in FIG. 16.
From the foregoing it will be evident that the dilferent areas of the two sides of the tab may be coated as aforesaid with ordinary coating machines through which the strip 2 may be run lengthwise in coating each side. Moreover the exposed area of adhesive on the narrow end of the tab need not be applied by printing, it being difiicult to apply adhesive by printing.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application Ser. No. 847,990, filed October 22, 1959, now US. Patent No. 3,065,101.
I claim:
1. A paster tab comprising a base strip having a long section extending the full length thereof and a side section projecting laterally from the long section at one end of the tab so that said one end is wider than the other Li. narrower end, one side of the tab being adhesive only on said side section and the other side being adhesive only on said long section.
2. A paster tab comprising a base strip having a central section extending the full length thereof and side sections projecting laterally from the central section at one end of the tab so that said one end is wider than the other narrower end, one side of the tab being adhesive only on said side sections and the other side being adhesive only on said central section.
3. A paster tab comprising a base strip having a central section extending the full length thereof and side sections projecting laterally from the central section at one end of the tab so that said one end is wider than the other narrower end, one side of the tab having adhesive only on said side sections and the other side having adhesive only on said central section.
4. The method of making paster tabs which comprises applying to one side of an elongate base strip a stripe of adhesive extending lengthwise of the strip and of less width than the width of the strip, applying to the other side of the strip a second stripe of adhesive which is offset from said first stripe crosswise of the strip, and from the strip cutting tabs one end of which extends across both of said stripes and the other end of which extends across only one of the stripes.
5. The method of making paster tabs which comprises applying to one side of an elongate base strip two lateral stripes of adhesive extending lengthwise of the strip with a space therebetween, applying to the other side of the strip a central stripe which is confined to the area opposite said space, and from the strip cutting T-shaped tabs each of which extends across all of said stripes at the wide end with said lateral stripes cut away at the narrow end.

Claims (1)
1. A PASTER TAB COMPRISING A BASE STRIP HAVING A LONG SECTION EXTENDING THE FULL LENGTH THEREOF AND A SIDE SECTION PROJECTING LATERALLY FROM THE LONG SECTION AT ONE END OF THE TAB SO THAT SAID ONE END IS WIDER THAN THE OTHER NARROWER END, ONE SIDE OF THE TAB BEING ADHESIVE ONLY ON SAID SIDE SECTION AND THE OTHER SIDE BEING ADHESIVE ONLY ON SAID LONG SECTION.
