Description

J. M. MACKAY July 21, 1964 SHOE COVERING Filed Jan. 8, 1963 INVENTOR Joyce M. Mackay (29pm, FIG 4. ATTORNEY United States Patent O 3,141,247 SHOE CUVERING Joyce M. Mackay, Huntington Station, N.Y. (2 Packet Road, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif.) Filed Ilan. 8, 1963, Ser. No. 250,071 2 Claims. (Cl. 36-7.1)
This invention relates generally to wearing apparel and more particularly to a new and useful shoe covering for ladies shoes.
While Womens shoes are generally similar of configuration, pairs of such shoes are often duplicated in a single wardrobe to the end of providing a wearer a selection of shoes varying in color, pattern or texture although the style thereof be substantially the same. Since shoes are reasonably expensive wardrobe items, it is impossible for the average person to obtain a sutiicient supply of shoes to match the dress, or other part of the wearers ensemble as the occasion may require.
Accordingly, it is the primary purpose of this invention to provide a shoe covering of desired color, pattern or texture which may be snugly stretched over a ladys high heeled shoe to give the shoe an entirely new appearance, suitable to the present need of the wearer.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a shoe covering of the foregoing character which will readily conform to the shoe being modified and which will stretch substantially to thus accommodate to a wide range of shoe sizes.
A further object of the instant invention is to provide a shoe covering which includes an overlaid sole portion or protective member which will absorb wear and preclude damage to the elastic material of which the covering is formed.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a shoe covering which includes sole and toe protective members having relative rigidity which will, notwithstanding such rigidity be adaptable over the entire sole area of the shoe to be covered.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a structure of the character heretofore described which is simple and practicable in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which will effect a considerable saving in ladies footwear and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a ladys shoe;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a ladys shoe, the shoe covering according to the present invention being positioned thereover;
FIGURE 3 is a view of the shoe covering per se;
FIGURE 4 is a longitudinal cross-sectional side elevation of the illustration of FIGURE 2; and
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIGURE 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, FIGURE 1 illustrates a ladys shoe of conventional style, the numeral representing the sole, 12 the heel, 14 the vamp, 16 the toe and 18 generally designating the body thereof.
Essentially, the shoe covering as shown in FIGURE 3 of the drawings is seen to be comprised of integrally formed elastic sole portion 20, heel portion 22, vamp portion 24, toe portion 26 and body portion 28, said sole portion having inner and outer surfaces 30 and 32 respectively as will appear in FIGURE 4. Connected to said outer surface 32 adjacently of said toe portion is a protective member 34 which is of leather, plastic or other suitable shoe sole material which is non stretchable and Wear resistant. Similarly attached to said outer surface 32 and rearwardly of said protective member 34 is protective member 36, said protective members 34 and 36 being spaced by elastic material at region 38 to thus provide a stretchable region between said protective members.
As further shown in the drawings, protective member 40 is connected to inner surface 30 of said sole portion, said protective member 40 and 36 being respectively superposed, a part 42 of said sole portion being disposed therebetween. Protective member 44 is similarly connected to the outer surface 46 of heel portion 22, said protective member 44 being adapted to lie in direct alignment with heel 48 of a shoe when the shoe covering is stretched over the shoe to assume the contour thereof.
Consonant with the foregoing the instant invention thus provides a decorative shoe covering which is stretchably receivable over a variety of shoes having similar configurations but of different sizes. rotective members 34, 36, 40 and 44 which are attached by cement, stitching or other suitable method, where described and shown, protect the elastic material of which the shoe covering is comprised thus protecting the sole portion and the base of the heel portion against attrition with the ground. Protective member 40 further protects said elastic material against attrition with the shoe itself at the ball of the sole region, said region being subjected to severe pressure and strain. The space 38 provided between protective members 34 and 36 provides elasticity at the sole portion otherwise rigid by reason of said protective members attached thereto. Said space 38 therefore enables said sole portion to conform to various sole sizes depending upon the shoe to be covered, while retaining the attributes of wear resistance attendant therewith.
Both the structural and operational characteristics of the invention having been described, it will be understood that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of parts from that disclosed herein without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the attendant advantages thereof, provided, however that such changes fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
1. A decorative shoe covering comprised of integrally formed elastic sole, heel, vamp, toe and body portions, said portions having inner and outer surfaces, said sole portion having a first protective member adjacent said toe portion and connected to the outer surface of said sole portion, a second protective member connected to the outer surface of said sole portion, said first and second protective members being spacedly related, and a third protective member connected to the inner surface of said sole portion, said second and third protective members being respectively superposed, a part of said sole portion being disposed therebetween, and a fourth protective member connected to the outer surface of said heel portion, said shoe covering being stretchably receivable over a shoe and adapted to assume the contour thereof.
2. A decorative shoe covering comprised of integrally formed elastic sole, heel, vamp, toe and body portions said portions having inner and outer surfaces, a rst protective member adjacent said toe portion and connected to the outer surface of said sole portion, a second protective member connected to the outer surface of said sole portion, said rst and second protective members being spacedly related, and a third protective member connected to the inner surface of said sole portion, said second and third protective members being respectively superposed, a part of said sole portion being disposed therebetween, said shoe covering being stretchably receivable over a shoe and adapted to assume the contour thereof.
