ATTORNEYS United States Patent Filed Nov. 16, 1962, Ser. No. 238,202 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-62) The present invention relates to bags and more particularly to a bag of impervious material having an open top provided with a self-sealing adhesive.
The bag of the present invention is formed of any suitable impervious material such as flexible elastic or waterproof paper. A coating of self-sealing adhesive is applied to the entire upper, open, inner end of the bag. This open end, comprehending the entire coating, is turned inwardly and downwardly whereby the coating is concealed and parts of the coating cannot be brought into contact with one another.
It is to be understood that the term self-sealing adhesive refers to that type of adhesive, which after being applied to and set on, for example, the material of the bag, it will not adhere to the material of the bag, but will adhere to and be in sealing relationship when pressed to like adhesive.
Further features and the advantages will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the bag shown in FIG. 1, but showing the upper end of the bag folded inwardly and downwardly;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 55 of FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 also is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4, but on a larger scale;
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view of the upper portion of the bag showing the upper end sealed by the self-sealing adhesive; and
FIG. 8 is a view similar to FIG. 7, but on a larger scale.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the bag 20 may be formed of any suitable material, preferably an impervious material such as flexible plastic, waterproof paper, etc. It is sealed except for the open top 22. The inside surface of the upper end 24 of the bag 20 is 'ice coated with a self-sealing adhesive as indicated at 26. This upper end is then folded inwardly and downwardly 2; is shown in FIGS. 4 5, and 6 to form a new open end When the upper end 24 is folded as shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, the adhesive is concealed. Being concealed from other parts of the adhesive, it is ineffective to adhere to anything. The bag is shipped and stored with the upper end 24 folded inwardly and downwardly.
After the material, to be packaged by the bag, is placed therein, the end 24 is pulled outwardly, and then, pressure is applied throughout the entire outer perimeter of the bag whereby the upper end of the bag is sealed.
The present invention has many uses among which is, it can be used for encompassing used catamenial pads. The bag being formed of impervious and opaque material, and being self-sealing, such pad can be hidden readily and unsanitary conditions, heretofore experienced, can be eliminated entirely.
While the form of embodiment herein shown and described constitutes preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claim that follows.
I claim:
A flexible bag formed of water impervious material, said bag having a closed bottom and an open top, said top comprising an outer and an inner wall interconnected by an integral rounded edge portion, said inner wall comprising a continuous uniform width skirt, self-sealing adhesive of the type that will not adhere to the uncoated surfaces of the bag but will adhere to itself coated on the surface of the back side of said skirt and positioned between the inside of said outer wall and the outside of said inner wall, said adhesive coating being of substantially the same width as said skirt, whereby material inserted into said bag upon filling remains out of contact with said adhesive, said skirt being capable of being turned upwardly exposing said adhesive surface in facing relationship thereby causing sealing engagement when pressed, said bag prior to sealing, during and after filling, being shorter in overall height than after sealing.
