No. 312,955 1 (llaixn. (Cl. 1tl034) The present invention relates to an improved utility box seat fitted for the storage and packaging of old newspapers and similar materials.

It is a principal object of the invention to provide a simple and effective arrangement of a packaging apparatus in a utility box seat by means of which newspapers and similar material stored fiat in said box may be quickly packaged and removed, and the device readily set up for the accumulation of further material.

With the above and other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the several features of the invention will be readily appreciated by one skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the utility box seat with the cover opened to illustrate particularly the packaging devices mounted therein;

FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the utility box seat shown in FIG. 1 in front elevation but with the cover closed, taken on a section line 22 of FIG. 3; and

FIG. 3 is a view of the utility box seat in side elevation taken on a sectional line 33 of KG. 2.

The utility box seat illustrated in the drawing as embodying in a preferred form the several features of the invention comprises a box having a front side panel 12, a rear side panel 14, two end panels 16 and 18 and a bottom panel 20. In the construction shown said panels are of plywood and are mounted on a rectangular frame 22 formed of heavy frame members including corner posts 24 and horizontal top and bottom framing members 26. The box 10 is provided with a cover 28 consisting of a top panel and side pieces 30 which when the cover is closed, overlie the respective end panels of the box. A seat cushion is shown at 32. The inside width and length dimensions of the box seat are such as to accommodate with comfortable margins newspapers folded once across the page so that such material laid into the box are stacked in position for packaging. The cover is hinged along its rear edge to turn about an axis provided by the rear top rail 26, the ends of which are journalled through the end pieces 30 of the cover.

Apparatus is provided for packaging the stacked papers which comprises a twine package supporting rod 34 which is mounted on the under or inner side of the cover 28 to extend lengthwise thereof adjacent the hinged edge. The two ends of the rod 34 are engaged in an aperture 36 and in a slot 38 formed respectively in brackets 40 and 42 formed on the inner faces of end pieces 30 of the cover. The groove .38 is so shaped as to permit the rod to be lifted free of said groove when the cover is open.

Two twine packages 46 and 48 are supported respectively toward the left hand end and at the middle of the rod 34, and any suitable means for confining the packages to these positions, such as pins 49, are provided. A strand from the left hand package 46 is led to a guide consisting of a screw eye 59 secured to the frame member 26 overlying the adjacent end panel at approximately the midpoint. A sufiicient amount of twine is pulled off from the package to extend down the end panel, along the length of the bottom panel and then up the other end panel to a screw eye 52 secured to the top rail overlying the second end panel at its midpoint, to which the end 3,145,646 Patented Aug. 25, 1964 of the strand is temporarily secured. A strand from the centrally disposed twine package 48 is passed through a screw eye 54 attached to the top rail 30 of the adjacent hinge carrying side panel 14 thence downwardly, across the inner face of the bottom panel 29 and upwardly, the end thereof being temporarily attached to a screw eye 56 to top rail 3%) of the front side panel 12 at its midpoint.

The twine laid into the box in the manner described is thus arranged in the desired position for packaging so that when the box is filled with papers it is necessary only to recover the secured ends of the two strands, sever the length of twine extending beneath the stacked papers from the twine package and tie the ends together. A pair of scissors 58 is placed in a holder 6i! on the inner face of the cover 28 for convenience in cutting the twine.

The arrangement shown has the advantage that twine, drawn off from each of the two packages 46, 48 and laid into the box in position for tying around the papers which are subsequently stacked therein, is so positioned that it will not be disturbed as papers are added to the pile in the box. In this connection it will be noted that the strand from the centrally located package passing directly to the guiding screw eye 54 secured to the top of the hinge supporting rear top framing member 26, and the strand passing from the twine package 46 to the guiding screw eye 50 at the adjacent end of the box, are so arranged that they do not pass directly over the box opening. When is is desired to package the papers within the box it is a simple matter to sever the required length of twine from the package to complete the tying operation conveniently and without waste.

What is claimed is:

A utility box seat fitted for the storage and packaging of accumulated papers in flat form comprising a box having side, end and bottom panels providing an oblong interior storage space for papers laid flat in said box, and a cover overlying the top of said box hinged along one side panel thereof, and a packaging device comprising a twine package supporting rod secured to the underside of said cover extending lengthwise thereof adjacent the hinged edge, means confining a twine package to one end of said rod, means confining a second twine package to a central portion of said rod, twine guides centrally lo cated at the upper edge of each end panel to receive a length of twine passing from said end supported package through the twine guide at the upper edge of the adjacent end panel, thence in a U-shaped loop downwardly along the length of the bottom panel and up to the other said end panel supported twine guide, and twine guides centrally located at the upper edge of each said side panel to receive a length of twine passing from said centrally confined twine package through said centrally located twine guide on the upper edge of the side panel carrying said hinge, thence in a U-shaped loop downwardly across said bottom panel and up to the other said side panel supported twine guide.
