' North Riverside, Ill. Filed Nov. 26, 1962, Ser. No. 240,104 2 Claims. (Cl. 1321-186) This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes. More particularly, this invention relates to a condenser unit with a filter element for absorbing or collecting moisture and for accommodating air-intake to cool the passing smoke.
One object of the present invention is to provide a condenser unit with a filter element for absorbing and/ or collecting moisture and products of combustion in the smoke passage, said unit providing an opening for the intake of air through the filter element to cool such element and thus enhance its effectiveness to cool and condense moisture from passing smoke.
The above and other desirable objects of the invention will become apparent from the ensuing description, the appended claims and the annexed drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational View of a pipe equipped with a condenser unit embodying a preferred form of my invention.
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View taken through the stem and mouth piece of the pipe, shown in FIG. 1, and also taken sectionally through the condenser unit.
FIGURE 3 is a view in cross section, taken at the line A-A of FIG. 2.
FIGURE 4 is a View corresponding to FIG. 2, but illustrating a modified form of the invention, wherein the condenser unit is mounted in an adapter capable of installation between the stern and mouth piece of a conventional pipe.
FIGURE 5 is a view in cross section, taken at the line B-B of FIG. 4 about the principle axis of the cylinder formed thereby.
The smoking pipe P shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 embodies a preferred form of this invention. Pipe P comprises the usual bowl B, a tubular stem 1 and a tubular mouth piece 2. A smoke drawing bore in the stem 1 communicates with a bore 17 in the mouth piece 2 which has an end portion 22 of reduced diameter telescoped into the bore 15 to detachably assemble the parts 1 and 2. The bore 15 constitutes a socket at the outer end of stem 1 for receiving the stem portion 22. The lower side wall 18 of stem 1 contains an opening 8 which leads laterally from the bore 15 outwardly through such side wall.
The condenser unit 3 comprises a filter carrier 19 constituting a single body of any solid substance which may be metal but is illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3 as being of hard rubber or Bakelite. This filter carrier body has an exterior portion 21 and an inner end 7 inserted into the side wall opening 8. A screw-thread connection is preferred between the parts 7 and 8. The inner end 7 of the filter carrier 19 contains a recess 9 constituting a holder socket for seating one end of a filter element 4. Said filter element is preferably a porous body of fibrous material (eg, cotton) and is shown as being cylindrical. The fibers of this body may be arranged heterogeneously or in any desired orderly arrangement as is the case when first formed into a sheet and then rolled into spiral convolutions of increasing diameter.
In each species of filter element there are formed myriad channels extending lengthwise thereof to provide communication between the filter element opposite ends and end portions. Channel means 10, shown in the drawing as a single hole, communicates with the stem bore 15 through the recess 9 and side wall opening 8 and through 3,i47,75 Patented Sept. 8, 1964 at least some of the myriad channels in the filter element 4. FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate the use of a filter adapter structure 5 disposed connectively between the pipe stem 1 and the mouth piece 2. The tubular adapter 5 has a reduced diameter end portion 24 insertable into the outer end of the stem bore 15. The large diameter right end portion of the bore 15a in the adapter 5 is the same diameter as the bore 15 of stem 1 wherefore end portion 22 of stem 2 is insertable thereinto as shown in FIG. 4.
Condenser unit 6 corresponds to condenser unit 3. It is formed with a filter-element-receiving recess 13 corresponding to the recess 9 and a channel means 14 corresponding to the channel means 10. A reduced diameter end portion 11 of the condenser unit 6 fits into an opening 12 in the adapter side wall 25.
It is preferred that the condenser unit 6 has a threaded portion 11 to mate with the threading in opening 12 to facilitate attachment and detachment of the condenser unit with respect to the adapter structure 5. The filter element 4 corresponds to that described in connection with the previous embodiment.
The filter carriers I9 and 6 can have any desirable shape, which in these embodiments provide a pipe stand or holder.
The new pipe invention operates as follows:
The hot smoke, passing the filter element 4, as shown by arrow A, will mix with cool air, passing through the filter element 4, indicated by arrow 16. Moisture in the hot smoke gases will condense and will be absorbed by the filter element 4 which is cooled by the air entering at 16. A cooler, cleaner smoke will enter the mouth.
It is easy to replace the filter element 4 after one or more smokes.
The carriers 19 or 6 can be attached to new as well as to old pipes. In old pipes, only a matching hole 8 has to be drilled into the pipe stern 1 and tapped when a threaded connection is employed.
Adapter structures 5 can be used for old pipes, eliminating drilling a hole in pipe stem 1.
The filter elements 4 can be impregnated with a slight amount of mint, menthol or any other desirable flavor to suit the taste of the individual smoker.
While a limited number of embodiments described herein are at present considered to be preferred, it is understood that various modifications and improvements may be made therein, and it is intended to cover in the appended claims all such modifications and improvements as fall Within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What is desired to be claimed and secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A combined pipe stand and filtering structure for a smoking pipe that includes a tubular stem which defines a smoke drawing bore and has an opening extending through the stem and communicating with the smoke drawing bore; which structure comprises a filter carrier; said filter carrier being integrally formed with a first end portion and said carrier having a second enlarged and fiared end portion that is proportioned to provide a supporting base for a smoking pipe provided with said combined structure; said first end portion of said carrier being proportioned to mate with and be removably maintained within the opening provided in the stem of the smoking pipe; said filter carrier having a recessed region and an air circulating hole provided therein; said recessed region extending through said first end portion of said filter carrier so as to communicate with the smoke drawing bore when said first end portion of the filter carrier is positioned within the opening provided in the pipe stern; said air circulating hole communicating with said recessed region and extending through said second end portion of said carrier to thereby provide a passage for cooling air to the smoke drawing bore; and an absorbent myriad channeled proportioned to matingly connect the tubular stern and a 10 tubular mouth-piece of the smoking pipe, said lter adapter being provided with a suitably proportioned hole for receiving said rst end portion of said filter carrier.

Claims (1)

1. A COMBINED PIPE STAND AND FILTERING STRUCTURE FOR A SMOKING PIPE THAT INCLUDES A TUBULAR STEM WHICH DEFINES A SMOKE DRAWING BORE AND HAS AN OPENING EXTENDING THROUGH THE STEM AND COMMUNICATING WITH THE SMOKE DRAWING BORE; WHICH STRUCTURE COMPRISES A FILTER CARRIER; SAID FILTER CARRIER BEING INTEGRALLY FORMED WITH A FIRST END PORTION AND SAID CARRIER HAVING A SECOND ENLARGED AND FLARED END PORTION THAT IS PROPORTIONED TO PROVIDE A SUPPORTING BASE FOR A SMOKING PIPE PROVIDED WITH SAID COMBINED STRUCTURE; SAID FIRST END PORTION OF SAID CARRIER BEING PROPORTIONED TO MATE WITH AND BE REMOVABLY MAINTAINED WITHIN THE OPENING PROVIDED IN THE STEM OF THE SMOKING PIPE; SAID FILTER CARRIER HAVING A RECESSED REGION AND AN AIR CIRCULATING HOLE PROVIDED THEREIN; SAID RECESSED REGION EXTENDING THROUGH SAID FIRST END PORTION OF SAID FILTER CARRIER SO AS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE SMOKE DRAWING BORE WHEN SAID FIRST END PORTION OF THE FILTER CARRIER IS POSITIONED WITHIN THE OPENING PROVIDED IN THE PIPE STEM; SAID AIR CIRCULATING HOLE COMMUNICATING WITH SAID RECESSED REGION AND EXTENDING THROUGH SAID SECOND END PORTION OF SAID CARRIER TO THEREBY PROVIDE A PASSAGE FOR COOLING AIR TO THE SMOKE DRAWING BORE; AND AN ABSORBENT MYRIAD CHANNELED FILTER ELEMENT REMOVABLY POSITIONED WITHIN SAID RECESSED REGION OF SAID FILTER CARRIER; SAID FILTER ELEMENT HAVING A LENGTH SUCH THAT A PORTION THEREOF EXTENDS BEYOND SAID RECESSED REGION AND SO THAT SAID EXTENDING PORTION OF SAID FILTER ELEMENT IS POSITIONED WITHIN THE SMOKE DRAWING BORE WHEN THE FIRST END PORTION OF SAID FILTER CARRIER IS POSITIONED IN THE OPENING PROVIDED IN THE PIPE STEM.
