PACKAGE COMPRESSOR.
No. 315,044. Patented Apr. 7, 1885.
WE/E'ZEEEES. 90 Co.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. LUCE, GEORGE BOOLE, AND BENJAMIN BRYON, 'OF SAN FRAN- OISOO, CALIFORNIA.
PACKAGE-COMPRESSOR.
SPECIPTCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,044, dated April 7 1885 Application filed November 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. LUOE, GEORGE BooLE, and BENJAMIN BRYON, of 1 the city and county of San Francisco, State 5 of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Compressors; and we hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact description thereof.
7 Our. invention relates to an improvement 10 in devices for compressing and binding packages and small parcels; and it has for its ob ject the provision for office or store use of a simple and effective means whereby packages of letters, bills, or memoranda that are to be filed away, or stationery goods and other articles to be transported, may be compressed and done up in packages occupying comparatively little space.
The manner in which we proceed to construct, apply, and use our said invention will fully appear in the following description, reference being hereby made to the accompanying drawings by figures and letters.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A represents the bed, B the head, and G the follower of our device. The follower is operated by the screw D feeding into the nut 0 E, which is rigidly attached to the follower through the guideway in the bed A. This screw is suitably journaled in the boxes d (1, attached on the under side of the bed, and has on its end the hand-wheel H. Attached to 5 the head B of the device is a box, I, for holding the binding-cords. This box is provided with a cover, '6, having the aperturesz", through which the cords c are led to the compressor.
In the bed, head, and follower are cut the 40 corresponding grooves, g, which admit the laying of the binding-cords in proper position for binding without their interfering with the placing of the package or being disturbed by the movement of the follower.
The spiral springs, placed in the grooves 8, holds the cords to their place, the manner of attaching being simply to insert the cord from the outside between the spirals, the reaction of the spring holding sufficiently.
The hooks 15, corresponding with the grooves in the follower and attached to its back, hold the ends of the cords in place. A cutter, T,
is attached to the side in proximity to the U. a. holder, to facilitate cutting the cords.
The nut E is integral with an angle-plate E, to which the follower is bolted, the has: being enlarged to form a bearing upon the bed. to resist pressure in that direction when the follower is in operation.
It is evident that the side B shown in the drawings may be dispensed with, although it adds strength and appearance to our device.
The compressor may be readily attached to a wall or supported on a table, according to convenience.
The operation of the device is as follows: The cordsc are drawn from the box and laid in the grooves so that their ends extend under the hooks t on the follower. The package to be compressed is laid on the bed, and the hand-wheel is revolved until its screw feeding into the nut E has caused the follower to advance sufficiently to compress to the desired degree. Each cord is now taken up, out, and tied, and the follower is released, when the operation is complete.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A package-compressor consisting of the bed A and fixed head B, with grooves 9 extending down the head and over the bed, transverse grooves s s in the head having the cordholders 3 s therein, and the movable follower O, nut E, and screw D, substantially as set forth.
2. A package-compressor consisting of the fixed head B, having the cord-holder I secured upon it, the bed A, the movable follower O therein, said follower being provided with the cord-hooks it on the back thereof, the nut E, secured to the follower C and extending down through the bed A, and the operating-screw D, all constructed, arranged,"and combined substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands.
GEORGE W. LUOE. GEORGE BOOLE. BENJAMIN BRYON.
