Description

Nov. 3, 1964 R. A. COTE 3,
CARTON FOR TISSUES Filed May 51, 1963 INVENTOR. RAYMOND A. COTE ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,155,273 CARTON FOR TISSUES Raymond A. Cote, Metuchen, N.J., assignor to Canadian This invention relates to folding cartons made from paperboard and the like. More particularly, it relates to a novel and highly merchantable carton for and package of facial or cleansing tissues or similar materials.
The objects of the present invention are, principally, to provide a carton or box for facial tissues and comparable products which effectively displays the goods it contains; which is easily openable, but adequately protects the goods from dust, etc., prior to the opening; and, which, preferably, permits the removal-from at least the top wall of the carton-of advertising or other matter when placed in home bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens.
These and other objects obvious to those skilled in the art are achieved by the box of the present invention which is, generally, comprised of top, bottom, side, and end walls and is adapted for end loading. More particularly, the noted desirable results stem from a combination of structural features in the box which include longitudinal tear strip defining means disposed in the top wall. window defining means disposed along each side of the tear strip in the top wall, transparent covering means disposed under the tear strip and windows in the top wall, and tissue or the like withdrawal slot means disposed under the tear strip and in the transparent covering of the windows in the top wall. Preferably, the slot is narrower in width than the tear strip, so that it completely overlies the slot and, thereby, inhibits or prevents the dust or other dirt to be found on store shelves from entering the box through the slot and detracting from the appearance of the tissues the box holds. Again. in a preferred embodiment, all the printed indicia of an instructive nature such as advertising or price marking or directions for opening the box are placed entirely (or entirely insofar as the top wall is concerned) on the tear strip, so that when it is removed in the home, the indicia are as well.
For a better understanding of the present invention, reference should be had to the attached sheet of drawings in which FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a closed package in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an isometric view of the package of FIGURE 1 partially opened; and
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of major portions of the carton interior surface of the blank from which the carton of the package of FIGURE 1 is made.
FIGURES l and 3 depict a carton blank and the carton made therefrom having top wall 10, bottom wall 11, side walls 12, and end walls 13. In FIGURE 1, one side wall is partially broken away to show tissues 14 disposed in the carton. FIGURES 1 and 3 also show a longitudinal tear strip 15, formed and disposed in top wall 10. which is defined at its ends by means of curvilinear ice lines of perforations 16 having, at about their midpoints, arcuate slits or cuts 17 which conveniently implement the eventual removal of tear strip 15.
Next, FIGURES 1 and 3 show windows 18 cut out of top wall 10 and lying on either side of tear strip 15. These windows are covered by a film or layer 19 of cellophane or similar transparent material. As shown, film 19 is comprised of two pieces of the material which are spaced apart to provide a slot 20 under tear strip 15 for use in removing tissues 14 (which can be arranged to pop-up through the slot by the tissue manufacturer) from the box when the tear strip is eliminated, but, of course, a single piece of the material can be similarly adapted. Such slot 20 is also shown, and probably more revealingly, in FIGURE 2 which is included primarily to illustrate how the box of the present invention looks when it is being opened and when, with the removal of tear strip 15, printed indicia 21 thereon-which can include the tissue brand name and other advertising-are being removed from top wall 10, if not from the entire container and package.
What is claimed is:
1. In a carton for facial tissues having top, bottom, side, and end walls, a longitudinal tear strip disposed in the top wall and defined at either end by a line of perforations and at either side by a window cut out of the top wall, transparent covering means disposed under the tear strip and the windows, and a tissue with drawal slot disposed under the tear strip and in the transparent covering means.
2. The carton of claim 1 in which printed indicia of an instructive nature are disposed on the tear strip.
3. The carton of claim 2 in which the printed indicia are disposed only on the tear strip.
4. In a package of facial tissues, a carton having top, bottom, side, and end walls, a longitudinal tear strip disposed in the top wall and defined at either end by a line of perforations and at either side by a window cut out of the top wall, transparent covering means disposed under the tear strip and the windows, a tissue withdrawal slot disposed under the tear strip and in the transparent covering means, and facial tissues disposed in the carton.
5. The package of claim 4 in which printed indicia of instructive nature are disposed on the tear strip.
6. The package of claim 5 in which the printed indicia are disposed only on the tear strip References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 947,517 1/10 Greene 206-4531 XR 1,752,504 4/30 Penrose 206-4531 2,672,233 3/54 Baxter 22l48 2,730,267 1/56 Marcalus 22148 FOREIGN PATENTS 438,057 11/35 Great Britain.
