(Cl. 128--295) This invention is a combination diaper and urinal for use by male paralytics, especially adapted for paraplegia patients, having residual difliculty in the genito-urinary system and lower bowel. Due to lack of satisfactory prosthesis, control of urinary bowel functions is rendered diflicult. After several years of experiments with all known types of diapers and urinals for male paralytics, I have worked out a combination which has been found to be practical, and which by actual use over a period of time, has proven to eliminate many of the drawbacks of combinations heretofore used.

An object of this invention is to provide a combination for the intended purpose, winch will eliminate secondary conditions, so distressing to patients who find it necessary to wear diapers and urinals twenty-four hours a day, particularly irritations of the skin, so difiicult to heal because of the notoriously poor blood circulation of paralytics.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a cornbinatilon diaper and urinal entity comprising a bodyencircling belt for supporting a relatively light-weight blank or panel made of a suitable, durable fabric of sufficient strength to support the urinal entity in the front, and removable or disposable diaper pads in the back of the blank or panel, when in position on the body of the user; to provide a combination including a diaper panel which will positively hold the diaper pad, in contiguity to the rectum, contact of the diaper or pad with the sides of the buttocks and legs being avoided, to obviate pressure areas found where straps and fasteners of various miscellany are employed to engage the diaper with the body of the user; and to provide a combination of this kind, which may be expeditiously removed from and re-engaged with the body of the user, as an entity, without disengaging fasteners, buttons, pins, etc.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combination diaper and urinal unit in which a receptacle, forming a part of the urinal unit, may be disengaged and replaced without removing the diaper entity from the body.

Prior art: 919,875, Johnson, April 27, 1909; 2,506,558, Kennette, August 12, 1952.

The expired patent to Johnson is a suspensory including a receptacle for the male organ, which receptacle affords means for the introduction and discharge of liquid medicaments for the treatment of diseases, including social diseases. The patent to Kennette shows baby pants with means for detachably securing a diaper to the pants. Neither the patent to Johnson nor the patent to Kennette, or the combination thereof could be utilized by male paralytics, in accordance with the teaching of this invention.

Other objects will be apparent from the following description of the present preferred form of the invention, taken with the annexed drawing, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a diaper entity and urinal unit constructed in accordance with this invention, illustrating its application;

FIG. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same;

FIG. 3 is a detailed fragmentary front elevational view of the diaper entity and urinal unit, a part of the diaper panel being broken away to disclose to advantage the manner of securing the lower end of a diaper pad to the inner wall of the diaper panel;

FIG. 4 is also a fragmentary view of the diaper entity illustrating the sub panel in open position, with the urinal unit partly removed therefrom to disclose details;

FIG. 5 is an end elevational view of the diaper entity and urinal unit, wherein the sub panel is shown both in full lines and dotted lines, in order to illustrate the position of the sub panel when it is disengaged from the panel of the diaper entity, dotted lines being used to show the diaper pad disengaged from the diaper entity panel;

FIG. 6 is an elevational view of the panel of the diaper entity, showing the manner of mounting the diaper pad on the diaper panel;

To illustrate the application of this invention, there is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a fragment of a human body, including the waist 20, buttocks 21, and legs 22.

The combination of this invention includes a body-encircling belt 23, which supports a diaper entity 24. The entity embodies a blank or panel 25, one end of which is attached to the front of belt 23, as indicated at 26. The opposite end of the blank or panel is attached to the back of the belt, as shown at 27. The entity 24 further embodies a sub panel 28 and a urinal unit 29. The urinal unit is accessible through an opening 30, formed in the lower fore part of panel 25, as advantageously illustrated in FIG. 7. A diaper pad, such as shown at 31, is adapted for detachable engagement with the inner wall of the panel 25, located, as shown in FIGS. 3, 5 and 7. The pads may be disposable or reusable and of a size to cover a substantial area of the panel, from a point near the locus of engagement of the panel with the back of the belt 23, to a point adjacent the lower end of the opening 30, as also shown to advantage in FIGS. 3, 5 and 7. Any suitable means may be used for securing the pad to the panel, such as the stud and socket fasteners shown in the drawings. In this way the pad is held in the desired proximity to the rectum, without undue tightness or binding on the flesh of the user. The sub panel 23, in the form of invention here shown, has one margin sewn or otherwise secured to the panel 25, at point 32, just below access opening 30. The inner side of sub panel 28 is equipped with studs 33 along its upper margin and along a part of each side of the panel. The studs 33 complement, and are adapted for engagement with sockets 34, secured to the panel 25 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. An opening 35 is formed centrally in the sub panel 28 for registry with the access opening 30 of the panel 25, when the sub panel is in a closed position, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 7. A ring 36 is secured to the sub panel around the opening 35, the exposed face of the ring having sockets 37 mounted thereon.

The urinal unit 29 of the diaper assembly, as shown to advantage in FIGS. 4 and 7, comprises an annular assembly, generally designated 38, embodying a clamping ring a portion of the washer, which protrudesbeyond said ring.

Studs 43 project from the front face of ring 39. The receptacle portion of the urinal receptacle, designated 44, is made of layerspof soft,*flexible rubber or thelike, and has concentrically mounted in its inner end, a tapering truncated cone-shaped sheath 44, through which the male organextends. While I have herein described: the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that various changes may be made therein, without depanting from the spirit and scope of the claims hereto appended.

the entity also including a removable pad secured to the panel, in position to span the interstice between the buttocks, said entity further including a urinal unit, accessible through an opening in the front of the panel, the unit embodying a sub panel, the lower margin of which is anchored-to the main panel, in'close proximity to the bothaving an opening adapted to register with the access opening when the urinal unit is in use, a reinforcing ring with stud sockets, secured to the sub panel, around the opening in the latter, the urinal unit also including an apertured ring assembly embodying a flexible bag-like receptacle, with aconcent-ric sheath to embrace the male organ, studs carried by the secondmentioned ring complementing the sockets ofthe sub panel ring, to permit independent removal of the second-mcntioned'ring and receptacle. Claims

1. A COMBINATION DIAPER AND URINAL, FOR USE BY MALE PARALYTICS, INCLUDING A BODY-ENCIRCLING BELT ENGAGEABLE AROUND THE WAIST OF THE USER, A DIAPER ENTITY INCLUDING A PANEL, THE ENDS OF WHICH ARE SECURED TO THE BELT, THE INTERMEDIATE PART OF THE PANEL ENGAGING THE CROTCH OF THE USER, THE ENTITY ALSO INCLUDING A REMOVABLE PAD SECURED TO THE PANEL, IN POSITION TO SPAN THE INTERSTICE BETWEEN THE BUTTOCKS, SAID ENTITY FURTHER INCLUDING A URINAL UNIT, ACCESSIBLE THROUGH AN OPENING IN THE FRONT OF THE PANEL, THE UNIT EMBODYING A SUB PANEL, THE LOWER MARGIN OF WHICH IS ANCHORED TO THE MAIN PANEL, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE BOTTOM OF SAID ACCESS OPENING, THE CENTER OF THE SUB PANEL HAVING AN OPENING ADAPTED TO REGISTER WITH THE ACCESS OPENING WHEN THE URINAL UNIT IS IN USE, A REINFORCING RING WITH STUD SOCKETS, SECURED TO THE SUB PANEL, AROUND THE OPENING IN THE LATTER, THE URINAL UNIT ALSO INCLUDING AN APERTURED RING ASSEMBLY EMBODYING A FLEXIBLE BAG-LIKE RECEPTACLE, WITH A CONCENTRIC SHEATH TO EMBRACE THE MALE ORGAN, STUDS CARRIED BY THE SECOND-MENTIONED RING COMPLEMENTING THE SOCKETS OF THE SUB PANEL RING, TO PERMIT INDEPENDENT REMOVAL OF THE SECOND-MENTIONED RING AND RECEPTACLE.
