Description

F 1965 B. A. HUNTER 3,169,679
' CLOSURE FOR TOP PERFORATED CANS 'Filed Dec. 6, 1963 flew/70rd ,4. flu/ne/ INVENTOR.
3,159,679 Patented Febt 16, 1965 3,169,679 CLOSURE FUR TOP PERFORATED CANS Bernard A. Hunter, 12749 E. Market St. Road,
Houston, Tex. Filed Dec. 6, 1963, Ser. No. 328,744 4 Claims. (Cl. 222-484) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a closure for top perforated cans. It is an object of this invention to provide a closure for liquid containers, such as cans containing motor oil, fruit juices and the like, where the. top of the can is peri conduit over the one opening and the smaller opening forated to gain access to the contents and where the confor liquid containers having means for sealing said con-' tainers after once being opened, and for retaining the sealing means on the closure when in sealing and nonsealing position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts more particularly defined in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of the device shown attached to a container, the container being shown in dotted lines.
FIGURE 2 is a top view taken on the line 2-4 of FIG- URE 1, and
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational View, in cross section, taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a container, such as a can containing lubricating oil, fruit juice or the like, having a peripheral ridgeor bead 2. The flat cap 3 of the closure has a depending peripheral flange 4 internally grooved to receive the ridge 2. Integral with said top 3 and extending upwardly therefrom are the conduits 5, 6 having the external flanges 7, 8 and in transverse axial. relation with said top is the upstanding post 9 having the external flange 10.
A sealing means is provided for the conduits 5, 6 consisting of the strap 11, the center portion of the strap 11 being downwardly directed and provided with lug receiving opening 12 formed to receive the post. 9 and flange 10, the post 9 extending through the opening 12 and the flange 10 bearing against the upper surface of the strap 11. Adjacent the outwardly extended ends of the strap 11 are the sockets 13, 14 formed to receive the extended ends of the conduits 5, 6 and the flanges 7, 8.
The top and strap are formed of pliable material, such as a polyethylene plastic, and lips 15, 16 are formed adjacent each end of the strap 11 to aid in removing the respective ends of the strap 11 from the conduits 5, 6.
In use the cap 3 is mounted on the container 1 in which a pair of openings have been formed, with the larger 6 over the other opening and the internal groove in the peripheral flange 4 receiving the external marginal head or ridge 2 of the can 1. When it is desired to pour the contents or the can, the ends of the strap 11 are removed from the conduits 5, 6 as by means of the lips 15, 16 and the strap rotated on the post 9 to clear the conduits 5, 6
and when the amount desired has been poured from the can 1, the ends of the strap'll are again snapped on to the ends of the conduits 5, 6 for sealed storage of the can.
While the foregoing is considered a preferred form of the invention, it is by way of illustration only, the broad principle of the invention being defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a closure for containers, a cap having a depending marginal flange adapted to be mounted on the top of the container, a pair of upstanding conduits in opposed relation, an axial post extending upwardly from said cap, a strap rotatably mounted on said post and sockets formed in said strap adjacent each end thereof adapted to be mounted on the extended end of each of said conduits.
2. In a closure, a cap, a marginal. depending flange on said cap, upstanding conduits on said cap in opposed relation, an axial post extending upwardly from said cap, an elongated strap having sockets formed in the'adjacent each end adapted to receive the extended ends of said conduits and having a downwardly inclined central portion and an axial opening in said central portion adapted to be received by the extended end of said post.
3. In a closure, a cap, a marginal depending flange on said cap, upstanding conduits on said cap in opposed relation, an axial post extending upwardly from said cap, an elongated strap having sockets formed therein adjacent each end adapted to receive the extended ends of said conduits and having a downwardly'inclined central portion and an axial opening in said central portion adapted to be received by the extended end of said post and an internal groove in said marginal flange adapted toreceive the marginal head of a container.
4. In a closure, a cap, a marginal depending flange on said cap, upstanding conduits on said cap in opposed relation, the extended end of each of said conduits having an external. flange, an axial post extending upwardlytrom said cap, said post having an external flange on the'extended end thereof, an elongated strap having sockets formed therein adjacent each end thereof adapted to receive the extended ends of said conduits and having means for rotatably securing said strap to said axial post.
