Filed Apr. 26, 196.3,Ser. No. 275,825 2 Claims. (Cl. 128-488) This invention relates to childrens garments and more particularly concerns a novel construction for a childs pajama pants.

According to the invention there is provided a pajama garment made of cotton flannel or other soft fabric. The garment is intended to cover the lower portion of a childs body, crotch and legs. The garment may be characterized as pajama pants. Inside the pajama pants is an insert or lining of moistureproof plastic sheet material defining a complete panty. For a very young child, this plastic panty may cover a diaper worn by the child. In order to assure warmth and a sung fit of the pajama pants, elastic bands are provided at ankles and waist of the garment. In addition, leg holes of the panty are ringed with elastic strips. The panty is secured at its upper Open end to the upper open seamed end of the pajama pants. The lower end or crotch piece of the panty is free from the crotch of the pajama pants so that the child has freedom of movement of the legs and body.

It is therefore one object of the invention to provide a childs pajama pants lined with a moistureproof plastic panty.

It is another object of theinvention to provide a childs pajama pants in which a plastic panty is secured at'its open top to the pajama pants but is free therefrom at the bottom of the panty.

A further object is to provide a childs pajama pants as described with means for adjusting the width and length of the panty inside the pajama pants.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring first to FIGS. 1-5, there is shown a pajama garment 20 including a childs pajama pants 21. The pants have legs 22 and a waist portion 24. The garment includes four fabric panels 25 -25 The two

Elastic bands '34 are provided near the open bottoms of the legs 22 to insure that the garment fits snugly at the ankles of a child wearing the garment. Another elastic band 35 is secured within a rolled and stitched seam 36 at the top of the garment to insure snug fit at the waist of the child.

Inside the pajama pants 21 and serving as a liner for the body portion is a panty 40 shown to best advantage in FIGS. 8 and 9. This panty is formed from a single piece of flexible, waterproof plastic sheet material shown as a blank 40 in FIG. 7. This blank has a general hourglass form with lateral arcuate indentations 42, outwardly flaringlateral edges 44, and straight opposite and edges 46.

In forming the panty 40, the blank 40" is folded in half across its narrow central portion C. This central portion C then defines the crotch of the panty between leg holes; see FIGS. 5, 8-. and 9. The indentations 42 define the leg holes to which are sewn elastic bands 48 for securing the panty snugly at the thighs of the child. The straight end edges 46 of the blank lll' are secured within the rolled seam 35 at the top of the garment so that the panty is held at its open top in registration with the open top of the pa ama pants. The lateral edges 44 of the panty are secured in respective lateral outer seams 33 33 of the pajama pants. The crotch C of the panty is vertically spaced from the crotch 28 of the pajama pants. This construction provides freedom of movement of the childs legs and body.

The pajama pants are loosely fitted to the childs body and legs at all points except at the ankle band and waistband. The panty is fitted loosely to the childs body at all points except at the waistband and leg holes. If the child wears a diaper as will usually be the case, the panty which is fully cut, provides ampleroom for-the diaper. The moistureproof construction of the panty insures that the pajama pants will not be soiled while the child is sleeping. The pajama pants will be worn with a pajama top or jacket of conventional construction, not shown herein.

In FIGS. 10-12 is shown another pajama garment 2A which is similar to garment 20 except that the pajama pants 21 are formed by two generally rectangular fabric panels 25' and 25" which are identical in form as 'of four-piece construction for garment 20A, cutting and The front panel is similar to both 3 seaming operations are omitted which lowers the cost of fabrication, The panty 40 of the garment A has the same construction and disposition as in garment 20 and similar parts of both garments are identically numbered.

In FIGS. 14 and 15, pajama garment 29B is identical in construction to garment 20A except that the lateral edges 44 of the panty 40A are secured together to form lateral seams which are free from the outer seams 33', 33" joining the outer edges of the two panels 25 together. This construction gives the child greater freedom of movement inside the pajama pants since the panty is not joined at its sides to the sides of the pajama pants. In FIGS. 16-19 is shown another panty construction. The panty 4013 has parallel seams formed by lines of stitching 50 50 extending across the crotch C and defining loops 4% 49 By opening the stitching it is possible to lengthen the panty at the crotch. Stitching 50 can be opened for partial lengthening and stitching 50* will be open for full lengthening. The lateral edges of the panty have seams formed by parallel lines of stitching 51 51 defining loops 47. By opening stitching 51 the width or circumferential length of the panty can be adjusted.

FIG. 19 shows the sheet plastic blank 40 from which the panty 46B is formed. It will be noted that the center section C is longer than center section C of blank 40 of FIG. 7. This permits the loops 49, 4? to be formed by transverse stitching applied along the dotted lines L1 and L2. The corners or wings 52 of the blank are extended laterally so that lateral loops 47 can be defined by stitching 51, 51* applied along lines L3, L4. It will be apparent that there has been provided a pajama garment which is utilitarian, practical and comfortable to wear. It is easily laundered. The garment is inexpensive to manufacture, durable in construction and attractive in appearance.

While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A pajama garment for a child, comprising pants having a pair of legs and integral body portion with open top and closed crotch, elastic bands near ends of the legs to engage ankles of the child, an elastic band at the open top of the body portion to engage the waist of the child, and a panty inside the body portion of the pants, said panty being fabricated of sheet plastic material with an upper edge engaged at the open top of the body portion, and with leg holes in the panty aligned with the legs of the pants, said leg holes having other elastic bands thereat to engage thighs of the child, said pants being formed by a plurality of similar fabric panels having edges secured together to define lateral outer seams of the legs and body portion of the pants, and inner seams of the legs, said legs and body portion defining the crotch of the pants, said panty having a crotch piece between the leg holes spaced from the crotch of the pants, said panty having lateral seams respectively secured to the lateral outer seams of the body portion of the pants, said panty having relatively broad front and rear portions with lateral indentations defining parts of said leg holes and with outwardly flaring edges defining parts of lateral seams of the panty, the crotch piece of the panty having reverted portions forming loops extending transversely thereacross defined by parallel lines of stitching, said lines of stitching being selectively removable for adjustably lengthening the crotch piece of the panty.

2. A pajama garment for a child, comprising pants having a pair of legs and integral body portion with open top and closed crotch, elastic bands near ends of the legs to engage ankles of the child, an elastic band at the open top of the body portion to engage the waist of the child, and a panty inside the body portion of the pants, said panty being fabricated of sheet plastic material with an upper edge engaged at the open top of the body portion, and with leg holes in the panty aligned with the legs of the pants, said leg holes having other elastic bands thereat to engage thighs of the child, said pants being formed by a plurality of similar fabric panels having edges secured together to define lateral outer seams of the legs and body portion of the pants, and inner seams of the legs, said legs and body portion defining the crotch of the pants, said panty having a crotch piece between the leg holes spaced from the crotch of the pants, said panty having lateral seams respectively secured to the lateral outer seams of the body portion of the pants, said panty having relatively broad front and rear portions with lateral indentations defining parts of said leg holes and with outwardly flaring edges defining parts of lateral seams of the panty, the crotch piece of the panty having reverted portions forming loops extending transversely thereacross defined by parallel lines of stitching, said lines of stitching being selectively removable for adjustably lengthening the crotch piece of the panty, said lateral seams of the panty having other loops defined by other lines of stitching parallel to the lateral seams of the panty, whereby the circumferential length of the panty may be adjusted by opening said other lines of stitching.

Claims

1. A PAJAMA GARMENT FOR A CHILD, COMPRISING PANTS HAVING A PAIR OF LEGS AND INTEGRAL BODY PORTION WITH OPEN TOP AND CLOSED CROTCH, ELASTIC BANDS NEAR ENDS OF THE LEGS TO ENGAGE ANKLES OF THE CHILD, AN ELASTIC BAND AT THE OPEN TOP OF THE BODY PORTION TO ENGAGE THE WAIST OF THE CHILD, AND A PANTY INSIDE THE BODY PORTION OF THE PANTS, SAID PANTY BEING FABRICATED OF SHEET PLASTIC MATERIAL WITH AN UPPER EDGE ENGAGED AT THE OPEN TOP OF THE BODY PORTION, AND WITH LEG HOLES IN THE PANTY ALIGNED WITH THE LEGS OF THE PANTS, SAID LEG HOLES HAVING OTHER ELASTIC BANDS THEREAT TO ENGAGE THIGHS OF THE CHILD, SAID PANTS BEING FORMED BY A PLURALITY OF SIMILAR FABRIC PANELS HAVING EDGES SECURED TOGETHER TO DEFINE LATERAL OUTER SEAMS OF THE LEGS AND BODY PORTION OF THE PANTS, AND INNER SEAMS OF THE LEGS, SAID LEGS AND BODY PORTION DEFINING THE CROTCH OF THE PANTS, SAID PANTY HAVING A CROTCH PIECE BETWEEN THE LEG HOLES SPACED FROM THE CROTCH OF THE PANTS, SAID PANTY HAVING LATERAL SEAMS RESPECTIVELY SECURED TO THE LATERAL OUTER SEAMS OF THE BODY PORTION OF THE PANTS, SAID PANTY HAVING RELATIVELY BROAD FRONT AND REAR PORTIONS WITH LATERAL INDENTATIONS DEFINING PARTS OF SAID LEG HOLES AND WITH OUTWARDLY FLARING EDGES DEFINING PARTS OF LATERAL SEAMS OF THE PANTY, THE CROTCH PIECE OF THE PANTY HAVING REVERTED PORTIONS FORMING LOOPS EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY THEREACROSS DEFINED BY PARALLEL LINES OF STITCHING, SAID LINES OF STITCHING BEING SELECTIVELY REMOVABLE FOR ADJUSTABLY LENGHTENING THE CROTCH PIECE OF THE PANTY.
