BED CLOTHES CLAMP.

BENJAMIN KIAM, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
BED-CLOTHES CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,914, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed May 15, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN KIAM, acitizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Clothes Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding bed-clothes over sleeping children or invalids; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a side rail of a bedstcad, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line a: 00 of Fig. 1, showing a leg and part of the head-board of a bedstead; and Fig. 3 is an end View of one of the clamps.
A indicates the side rail of a bedstead, and Bis a clamp secured thereto, consisting of a threaded rod, to, having an arm, b, provided with abend, c, fitting over the top of the rail, and an internally-threaded arm, d, screwing on the rod a and bearing against the bottom of the rail.
Instead of the bond 0, which prevents the clamp from being moved laterally out of engagement with the rail, any equivalent construction adapted 'to secure the same result may be employed. The arm b is to extend towardthe bed, and it is provided with a perforation, e, in its end, in which is inserted an elastic cord, 0, having attached thereto the clamp D. The clamp D consists of a strip of sheet metal made broader at the ends f than at the intermediate port-ion, g, and doubled upon itself and provided with a loop, h, by which the jaws i j are to be held together. The jaws are bent at right angles to the planes of the ends, and are adapted to overlap each other. The inner jaw,i, is serrated, as shown,
to give it a firm hold upon the bed-clothes.
The advantage of the elastic connection 0,
between the clamps B and D, is that the bedclothes are held. yieldingly thereby, so that they will not uncomfortably restrain the movements of the occupant of the bed in turning or getting out of bed.
In order to adaptthe rod B to take afirmer hold on the rail A, a washer, is, may be used in connection with the arm or nut d. The Washer is formed with a flange, Z, which engages with the inner surface of the rail, as shown.
I am aware of the fact that clamps for fastening bed-clothes to the bedstead have here tofore been employed, and I therefore only claim my particular means for attaching the clasp to the bed-rail, which is capable of universal application and adjustability to any part of the bed-rail without alteration of or injury to the same.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with a suitable clasp for holding the bed-clothes and its link 0, of the means for adjustably securing it to the bed-rail, consisting of a rod, B, having itslowor end screw-threaded and provided with a nut, d, and washer 7c, and having on its upper end a hook shaped projection that is adapted to pass over and around the upper edgeof the bed-rail, and is provided with an eye at e for connection with the clamp, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a suitable clasp for holding the bed-clothes, and an elastic connection, 0, of the rod 13, screw-threaded at its lower end, and provided with a nut, 01, and washer k, and having at its upper end a hook-shaped projection, 0, adapted to pass over and around the upper edge of the bedrail, and formed with an eye at e for the connection with the clasp, as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN KIAM.
