At the same time the frusto-conical portion Zd leaves the surface 32 on the body member 18, and the halves of the forward end of the actuator at opposite sides of the slot 26 move apart into the position of FIGURE 4, so that the forward head 61 is locked within the chamber 54- forwardly of the flange 53. The cosmetic l7 and its cup 51 are thereby interlocked with the actuator 24, so that the cosmetic stick cannot be removed from the actuator when it is in its extended position. Also, retraction of the actuator 24 by reverse rotation thereof engages the head 61 with the forward surface of the flange 53, as shown in FIGURE 4a, and pulls the cup 51 and cosmetic 17 rearwardly to return the cosmetic into the holder 16.

(Cl. 2tl6=-56) This invention relates generally to devices for storing and dispensing cosmetics, such as lipstick or other potted wax and oil base materials, and more particularly to an improved cosmetic stick dispensing device having unique means for supporting a replaceable cartridge and dispensing the cosmetic therefrom.
More specifically, this invention relates to improve ments in refill type cosmetic dispensers wherein an elongated holder for a stick cosmetic is fitted into an actuator housing, and in which an elongated screw member or actuator is extendable and retractable to move the cosmetic out of and retract it back within the holder.
Generally the screw actuator and an element in which it is threaded are relatively rotatable to move the actuator longitudinally and extend and retract the cosmetic stick therewith. After the cosmetic supply is used up, the holder therefor is preferably bodily removed and replaced, and interlocking means is provided, according to the present invention, whereby the cosmetic and its holder are interlocked with the device to prevent such removal and replacement, except when the actuator is substantially in its fully retracted position. More specifically, the actuator member is releasably interlocked with the cosmetic stick, and the cosmetic holder is releasably interlocked with the body of the device, and release of the holder from the device and of the cosmetic from the actuator can be effected only when the actuator is substantially in its fully retracted position.
Preferably, all of the operating mechanism, including the screw actuator, is located within the permanent part of the device and none in the refill cartridge, so that the refill cartridge is simpler and less expensive.
it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved, reliable and economical cosmetic storing and dispensing device.
Another object of this invention proved cosmetic dispensing device use with the substitution of simple metic refill cartridges.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved cosmetic storing and dispensing device employing readily substitutable cosmetic refill cartridges and having an actuator for extending the cosmetic from a holder therefor in which the refill holder is interlocked with the device, except when the actuator is substantially fully retracted.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved cosmetic dispensing device having an actuator capable of repeated use with replaceable refill cartridges including an elongated holder having a cosmetic movably stored therein, in which the actuator is interlocked with the cosmetic to effect movement thereof in opposite directions within the holder as the actuator is extended and retracted, and in which the actuator-cosmetic interlock prevents replacement of the refill cartridge except when the actuator is substantially fully retracted.

Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved cosmetic storing and dispensing device having an improved actuator mechanism capable of repeated use with cosmetic refill cartridges and in which substantially the entire mechanism of the actuator forms a permanent part of the device.
Yet another object of this invention is the provision of an improved, simple and economical cosmetic refill cartridge for a dispensing device.
These and other objects and features of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following specification and the appended drawings, in which:

Referring first to that embodiment of the invention specifically illustrated in FIGURES 1 through 6, the cosmetic storing and dispensing device according to the present invention is indicated generally at 11 as including a three-part metallic enclosing shell including a central exterior cylindrical sleeve 12 and a rear deep cup-shaped shell 13 cooperating with the central cylindrical sleeve 12 to enclose the operating mechanism for the device. A forward deep cup-shaped shell 14 encloses the refill cartridge, indicated generally at 15 and including a cylindrical holder 16 having a cosmetic stick l7 enclosed therein in the form of lip pomade, eye shadow, or other potted material.
The central outer metallic sleeve 12 has a tight press fit over an interior cylindrical body member 18 which may be formed of any desirable material, preferably a light-weight plastic. The body member 18 has reduced diameter end portions, 19 at its rear end and 21 at its forward end. A forward facing abutment surface 22 defines the boundary between the main diameter of the body member 13 and its reduced diameter forward portion 21. The member 18 is provided with a central bore 23 extending therethrough and internally threaded over the major and rear portion of its length, as at 25, and an elongated screw actuator 24 is threaded therein.
The forward end of the screw actuator 24 has an' axially-extending transverse slot 26 and a head 27 joined by a frusto-conical portion 28 to a reduced diameter portion 2? located forwardly of the screw threaded portion of the. actuator. The back surface of the head 27 on the actuator engages the forward surface 31 on the body member 18 to limit the retracted position of the actuator, and in this position, shown in FIGURE 2, the frusto-conical portion 28 engages the surface 32 on the forward end of the member 18. Where the screw actuator 2 4 is formed of metal, the halves thereof on opposite sides of the slot are spread apart so that they are biased by theirinherent resilience to spread into the position of FIGURES 4 and 4a, and are pressed toward each other in the actuator-retracted position of FXGURE 2 by the engagement between the surface 32 and the surface of the frusto-conical portion Where the screw actuator 24 is formed of plastic or other material which does not have an inherent resilient nature, a spring may be placed within the slot 26 to bias the forward port-ions of the actuator apart. 7
Spring latching members 33 are provided in the body member'id to latch the holder of the refill cartridge to the device. These latching members may be mounted in any desired manner, but preferably, as shown, within one or more slots 34 ex ending radially and longitudinally of the member 18 from the outer periphery to the bore 23 therein. The latching members 33 have main spring arms 35 disposed in the slots 34, and radially-extending end portions 36 received in complementary radial holes in the member 18. The latching members are then held in place by the outer shell sleeve 12. The spring arms 35 have spiral latching elements 37 on their free end which are biased outwardly by the resilience of the spring arms 35 into the locking position of FIGURE 2.
Upon the rear end of the-actuator 24 is mounted a cap 41 in any desired manner, being shown with the actuator threaded into an opening in the cap and cemented thereto at 42. The cap 41 is provided with opposite ears 43 which are slidably received within slots 44- in a split sleeve 4-5. The split sleeve 45 has rear end walls 45 which give the assembled sleeve an elongated cup shape, and the halves of the sleeve are provided with interior flanged ends 47 which interlock with an annular groove 4-3 in the reduced diameter rear port-ion19 of the body member 18. The outer rear shell 13 holds the halves of the split sleeve 45 together with a tight frictional fit thereto, and the flanged ends 47 and groove 4-8 are dimensioned so that the sleeve &5 is free to rotate about its engagement with the reduced diameter portion 19 of the member 13. Thus, in normal operation, the central cylindrical shell portion 12 and the body member 18 are held together by their tight pressed fit and the shell 13 and split sleeve 45 rorate relative thereto as a unit by their tight frictional fit to effect rotation of the screw acuator 24 within the threaded porion 25 of the bore 23 of the body member 18. The shell 13 and the split sleeve 45 normally remain together in assembly on the body member 13, since the shell 13, once it is slid onto the split sleeve 45, need'not be removed therefrom in the operation of the device nor in the substitution of a cosmetic cartridge refill.
The holder 16 of the cosmetic cartridge refill is preferably formed of lightweight, inexpensive plastic material andpreferably has the cosmetic pomade 17 potted or cast therein in situ. Within the bore of the cylindrical holder 16 is an end cup or cap 51 for the cosmetic stick which may be formed of metal or plastic material and is freely lidable longitudinally of the holder bore. The cup 51 has a rear end portion 52 terminating in an inwardly-directed, circular flange 53 defining, with the end' portion 52, an open chamber 54. Where the cup 51 is formed of. metal, a forwardly facing shoulder 55 may be provided to receive a disc 56 to close the end of the cup 51 forwardly of the chamber 54 to retain the cast or potted cosmetic within the cup. Where the cup 51 is molded of plastic material, the end wall represented by vented from rotating relative to the holder, while being freely slidable longitudinally thereof.
in manufacturing the cosmetic cartridge refill, the cup 51 is placed within the holder 16 and moved rearwardly therein to its extreme position, and the cosmetic 17 is heated to a liquid condition and poured into the bore of the holder 16, filling the bore andthe cup 51. When the V cosmetic solidifies into a stick, it will be interlocked with the cup 51, so that the two will move axially as a unit relative to the holder 16. The holder 16, the cup 51 and the cosmetic stick 17 constitute the entire cartridge refill for the device. The holder 16 of the cosmetic cartridge refill has an internal flange at 63 which defines the rearmost position of the cup 51 relative to the holder.
A second, smaller diameter head 61 is spaced forwardly of the head 27 on the actuator 24 by a reduced neck 62.
The head 61 and neck 62 are also divided into two halves by the transverse slot 26. When the halves of the forward end of the actuator are disposed in their adjacent positions, as shown in FIGURE 2, the head 61 will clear the circular opening through the flange 53.
The rearward portion of the holder 16 provides a skirt 6d which is received between the inner surface of the central shell sleeve 12 and the reduced diameter portion 21 of the body member 18 when the cosmetic holder is assembled on the device.- The skirt 64 is provided with holes 65 therethrough into which extend the latching spirals 37 on the ends of the spring arms 55 when the cosmetic holder is assembled on the device. To insure that the cosmetic holder 16 and the body member 18 are properly indexed so that the latching spirals 37 and holes "65 will mate, the skirt 64 of the holder 16 is provided with a longitudinally extending internal key 66 receivable within one or two diametrically opposite notches 67 in the reduced diameter portion 21 of the body meinber 18.
The operation of the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIGURES 1 through 6 will now be described.
The forward shell 14. has a freely slidable mounting on the cosmetic holder 16, so that the holder 16 will remain mounted on the device, as in FTGURE 2, by the frictional engagement of the skirt 64 of the holder with the body member 13 and the shell sleeve 12, and also by the engagement of the latching spirals 37 in the holes 65. However, with the actuator 2- in its fully retracted position as in FIGURE 2, the refill cartridge can be removed from the device by a strong pull on the holder 16 by which the skirt 64 is disengaged from the device by moving forwardly therefrom. In this movement the latching ends 37 of the spring arms 35 are moved inwardly into the dotted line positions of FIGURE 2, this movement being permitted by the reduced neck portion 29 on the actuator 24. i
In the position of FIGURE 2, the actuator'24 is free to separate from the end cup 51 on the cosmetic stick since the forward halves of the actuator are held together by the engagement of the frusto-conical portions 28 with the surface 37 at the forward edge of the body member 18. In this adjacent position, the halves of the head 61 have a maximum diameter less than the circular diameter of the flange 53. Therefore, in the actuator-retracted po sition of FIGURE 2, the cosmetic cartridge may be bodily removed from the device and a new refill cartridge, including a new holder 16, cosmetic stick 17 and cup 51, assembled with the device for actuation thereby and dispensing of the refill cosmetic.
With a cosmetic cartridge in place on the device, the cosmetic is dispensed by removing the shell 14 and rotating the rear shell 13 relative to the central shell 12. This rotates the split sleeve 45 relative to the body member 1%, and through the engagement of the cars 43 in slots 44, the cap 41 rotates with the split sleeve to rotate the actuator 24 therewith. The actuator 24, being threaded in the body member 18, moves forwardly thereof as an incident to its rotation, into an extended position, as shown in FIGURE 4.
With the forward movement of the actuator 24, the forward head 61 thereon moves into the chamber 5 forwardly of the flange 53 on the cosmetic cup 51. At the same time the frusto-conical portion Zd leaves the surface 32 on the body member 18, and the halves of the forward end of the actuator at opposite sides of the slot 26 move apart into the position of FIGURE 4, so that the forward head 61 is locked within the chamber 54- forwardly of the flange 53. The cosmetic l7 and its cup 51 are thereby interlocked with the actuator 24, so that the cosmetic stick cannot be removed from the actuator when it is in its extended position. Also, retraction of the actuator 24 by reverse rotation thereof engages the head 61 with the forward surface of the flange 53, as shown in FIGURE 4a, and pulls the cup 51 and cosmetic 17 rearwardly to return the cosmetic into the holder 16.
When the actuator 24 is extended, as in FIGURE 4, the threaded portion 25 of the actuator 24 is disposed opposite the latching ends 37 of the spring latches 33. The latches are thereby positively held in latching position, since they may not move radially inwardly, and the holder 1-5 is thereby interlocked with the main body of the device through the engagement of the latching ends 37 in the holes 65 in the skirt 64 of the holder 16.
It is therefore seen that with the actuator 24 extended, the cosmetic 17 is interlocked through its cup 51 with the actuator 24, so that it is not removable therefrom, and at the same time, the cosmetic holder 1."? is interlocked with the main body of the device and may not be removed therefrom. There is, therefore, a double interlock provided, both to the cosmetic holder and to the cosmetic stick itself. Movement of the actuator 2e forwardly causes movement forwardly of the cosmetic 17 out of its ,holder'ld by engagement of the forward surface of the head 27 with the rear surface of the flange 53; movement of the actuator rearwardly returns the cosmetic into the holder by engagement of the rear surface on the head 61 with the forward surface on the flange 53, as in FIGURE 4a. The cosmetic 17 is thereby freely moved outwardly and inwardly of its holder 16 by extension and retraction of the actuator 24 through rotation of the rear shell 13 in opposite directions relative to the center shell sleeve 12.
To remove a used cosmetic cartridge, including the holder and the cup 51, from the dispensing device, the actuator 24 must be retracted substantially into its rearmost position, as shown in FIGURE 2, by suitable rotation of the rear shell 13. In the final movement of the actuator into this position, the frusto-conical portion 28 engages the surface 37 on the body member 13 to move the spread-apart forward portions of the actuator toward each other to thereby move the head 61 to an exterior diameter smaller than the diameter of the opening in the flange 53, so that the head 61 will pass freely through this opening. At the same time, the lower diameter portion 29 on the actuator 24 is placed opposite the latching ends 37 on spring latches 33 so that these ends are free to move radially inwardly into the dotted-line positions of FIGURE 2. Forward movement of the holder 16 thereafter will readily disengage its skirt 64 from the main body of the device, and the cup 51 will be removed therewith. Thereafter a new cosmetic refill cartridge, including a new holder and cosmetic stick, may be assembled with the device, this assembly being permissible only while the actuator 24 is substantially fully retracted, in the position of FIGURE 2. With a new cartridge in place, subsequent extension of the actuator 24 will interlock the head 61 of the actuator with the cup 51 as previously described, and will also hold the latching ends 37 on the spring latches 33 in their latching positions to interlock the holder 16 with the main body of the device.
In the modification of this invention shown in FIG- URES 7 and 8, the parts having the same reference nu metals are the same as those described for the preferred embodiment of FIGURES 1 through 6. The embodiment of FIGURES 7 and 8 utilizes a different arrangement for mounting the holder for the cosmetic on the device and for interlocking it with the body thereof. The holder for the cosmetic is designated 16, but now has a skirt 71 threaded at "72 on its interior wall to be mounted on the body member 13 by screwing onto a reduced dial. eter threaded portion 73 on the body member. The body member 18 has the same diametrically opposite slots 34, but disposed therein are spring members 74 having spiral latching ends 75 and mounted similarly to the spring latches 33, but inherently biased in the opposite direction. The latching ends 75 are thereby biased radially inwardly into the position shown in FIGURE 7, within the space provided by the reduced diameter portion 29 of the actuator 24. The skirt 71 of the holder 16 is provided with diametrically opposite openings 76 receiving the latching ends 75 on the spring members v74. The indexing slots 67 and key 66 are omitted in the construction of FIGURES 7 and 8.
To mount the cosmetic refill cartridge of this embodiment of the invention to the main body of the device, the skirt 71 must be screwed onto the threaded portion 73 by relative rotation, and after the skirt is in its rearward position, as in FEGURE 7, such relative rotation is stopped when the holes 76 are opposite the latching ends 75. Projection of the actuator 24 forwardly thereafter will interlock the head 61. thereon with the flange 53 on the cup 51, as in the preferred embodiment of the invention, but now the threaded portion 25 of the actuator 24 forces the latching ends 75 of the spring members 74 radially outwardly against their inherent bias, into the latching position of FIGURE 8.
Therefore, in the embodiment of FIGURES 7 and 8, extension of the actuator after assembly of the cosmetic cartridge interlocks both the holder 16 with the main body of the device and the actuator 24- with the cosmetic cup as previously described. However, the holder of the cartridge is assembled with the main body of the device by a screw thread rotation, and the latches are normally biased open and positively moved to latching position by the extension of the actuator. Again, the actuator must be moved back into its substantially fully retracted position for the removal of the cartridge and substitution of another refill therefor.
in the modification of FEGURES 9 and 10, the split sleeve 45 is shortened and its slot 44 and the cap 41 omitted. In this modification the split sleeve is indicated at 81 and the actuator, which is now given the numeral 82, is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending, diametrically opposite slots 83 therein. Adjacent its rearward end, the split sleeve 81 is provided with a pair of radially-directed inward keys ti l which engage in the slots $3 to effect rotation of the actuator 82 upon rotation of the split sleeve 81 by the rear shell 13. By the engagement of the keys 3% in the slots 83, the actuator 82 is free to move axially of the split sleeve 31 as it threads through the ody member 13. By using the'spl-it sleeve 81 of the embodiment of FIGURES 9 and 10, there is a savings of material an weight over the split sleeve 45 and cap of the preferred embodiment. The other parts of the embodiment of FIGURES 9 and 10 may take the form of either the preferred embodiment of FIGURES 1 through 6, or the modification of FIG- URES 7 and 8. V

1. A dispensing device comprisin an elongated main vent its removal therefrom except when the actuator is substantially in fully retracted position.
2. A dispensing device comprising: elongated main body; an elongated actuator disposed in said body; rotatable means for effecting extension and retraction movements of the actuator relative to the main body; an elongated material cartridge removably mounted at its rear portion on said main body, the material in said cartridge being movable longitudinally thereof upon movement of said actuator; and latch means between said main body and cartridge movable to unlatching position when said actuator is in its substantially fully retracted position, said actuator obstructing movement of said latch means to unlatching position when it is forward of its fully retracted position, whereby said cartridge and main body are interlocked except when said actuator is in substan-tially'fully retracted position.
3. A dispensing device comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated actuator disposed in said body; rotatable means for effecting extension and retraction movements of the actuator'relative to themain body; an elongated material cartridge removably mounted at its rear portion on said main body, the material in said cartridge being movable longitudinally thereof upon movement of said actuator; interlock means operable when the.
actuator is forward of its fully retracted position for interlocking the material cartridge to the main body to prevent its removal therefrom except when the actuator is in substantially fully retracted position; and means interlocking the forward end of said actuator with said material when the actuator is forwardly of its fully retracted position whereby the material will be retracted into the cartridge upon retraction movement of the actuator into the main body and the material can be disconnected from the actuator only when the actuator is sub stantially in its fully retracted position. 1

A dispensing device comprising: an elongated main body; an actuator in said main body; means for manually manipulating said actuator to effect extension and retraction movement thereof with respect to said mainbody', an elongated material cartridge removably mounted with said main body to be normally associatedtherewith but to be readily removable therefrom when the material is consumed and a fresh cartridge is to be substituted therefor; means in said cartridge rearwardly of the material therein and interlocked with said material; means on the forward end of said actuator interlocking with said means in said cartridge when the actuator is out of its fully retracted position to prevent disengagement of the actuator and said means in said cartridge and providing for retraction movement of the material within the cartridge upon retraction movement of the actuator into the main body; means cooperating with said actuator when it is in its substantially fully retracted position to release said interlocking means on the forward end of the actuator to permit separation of said means in said cartridge, from the actuator; and means interlocking said cartridge with said main body when the actuator is forward of its fully retracted position so as to prevent removal of the cartridge from the main body except when the actuator is in its substantially fully retracted position.

A dispensing device for a cosmetic stick comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated actuator in said body; rotatable means for effecting extension and retraction movements of the actuator relative to the main body; an elongated cosmetic cartridge comprising an outer holder and a cosmetic material therein; means mounting said holder on said main body to assemble the cartridge therewith; means interlockingthe forward end of said actuator with the cosmetic material in said holder so as to elfect'movernent thereof in both directions relative to the holder upon extension and retraction movements of the actuator, said interlock means preventing release of said cosmetic material from the actuator when the actuator is forward of its fully retracted position; and means in the substantially fully retracted position of said actuator for releasing said interlock whereby said actuator must be returned to its fully retracted position before the cosmetic material can be separated therefrom.

A dispensing device for a cosmetic stick comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated screw actuator threaded in said main body; rotatable means cooperating with said screw actuator to effect extension and retraction movements thereof relative to said main body; an elongated cosmetic cartridge including a tubular holder, a cup member mounted in said tubular holder and a cosmetic'stick interlocked with the member so as to be movable longitudinally of the holder therewith in opposite directions; means between said holder, member and cosmetic stick preventing rotation of the member and stick relative to the holder; a skirt portion at the rear of said holder engaged with said main body to mount the holder thereon, the forward end of said actuator being longitudinally slotted and the parts on opposite sides of said slot being biased toward separated positions; means on said main body engaging said separated parts in the re tracted position of said actuator to move the parts toward each other; and means at the rear of said member freely passing the forward end of said actuator when its parts are together but positively preventing separation from said actuator when said parts are separated and thereby in interlocking relation with said member, whereby said memher and actuator can be separated only when said actuator is substantially in its fully retracted position.

A dispensing device for a cosmetic stick comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated screw actuator threaded in said main body; rotatable means cooperating with said screw actuator to effect extension and retraction movements thereof relative to said main body; an elongated cosmetic cartridge including a tubular holder, a cup member mounted in said tubular holder and 2. cosmetic stick interlocked with the member so as to be movable longitudinally of the holder therewith in opposite directions; means between said holder, member and cosmetic stick preventing rotation of the member and stick relative to the holder; a skirt portion at the rear of said holder'engaged withisaid main body to mount the holder thereon, the forward end of said actuator being longitudinally slotted and the parts on opposite sides of said slot being biased toward separated positions; means on said main body engaging said separated parts in the retracted position of said actuator to move the parts toward each other; means at the rear of said member freely passing the forward end of said actuator when its parts are together but positively preventing separation from said actuator when said parts are separated and thereby in interlocking relation with said member, whereby said member and actuator can be separated only when said actuator is substantially in its fully retracted position; and interlock means operable when said actuator is forward of its retracted position for interlocking said holder skirt and main body together to prevent separation there- 9 of except when the actuator is in substantially fully retracted position.
8. A dispensing device for a cosmetic stick comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated screw actuator threaded in said main body; rotatable means cooperating with said screw actuator to effect extension and retraction movements thereof relative to said main body; an elongated cosmetic cartridge including a tubular holder, 2. cup member mounted in said tubular holder and a cosmetic stick interlocked with the member so as to be movable longitudinally of the holder therewith in opposite directions; means between said holder, member and cosmetic stick preventing rotation of the stick relative to the holder; a skirt portion at the rear of said holder engaged with said main body to mount the holder thereon; and interlock means operable when said actuator is forwardly of its retracted position for interlocking the holder skirt and main body against separation to prevent removal of the cosmetic cartridge except when the actuator is in substantially fully retracted position.
9. A dispensing device for a cosmetic stick comprising: an elongated main body; an elongated screw actuator threaded in said main body; rotatable means cooperating with said screw actuator to efiect extension and retraction movements thereof relative to said main body; an elongated cosmetic cartridge including a tubular holder, a cup member mounted in said tubular holder and a cosmetic stick interlocked with the member so as to be movable longitudinally of the holder therewith in opposite directions; means between said holder, member and cosmetic stick preventing rotation of the stick relative to the holder; a skirt portion at the rear of said holder engaged with said main body to mount the holder thereon; and spring latch means on said main body engageable with the skirt on said holder in latching relation, said latch means being movable into latching and unlatching positions and said actuator engaging said latch means when the actuator is forward of its retracted position to prevent said latch means occupying their unlatching position, whereby said cartridge holder cannot be removed from the main body except when said actuator has been moved to its substantially fully retracted position.

The dispensing device defined in claim 9 in which said spring latch means is biased toward latching position and moved into unlatching position by the separation of said holder skirt from the main body, and in which the actuator moves into a position to positively prevent such movement into unlatching position.
11. The dispensing device defined in claim 9 in which said spring latch means is biased toward unlatching position and is positively moved into latching position by extension movement of the actuator.
12. The dispensing device defined in claim 9 in which said spring latch means is biased toward unlatching position, said holder skirt is threadedly engaged with said main body to mount it thereon, and said spring latch means is positively moved into latching position by extension movement of the actuator to prevent unthreading of the holder skirt from the main body.
13. A cosmetic stick dispensing device comprising: a main body portion having a threaded bore therein; a screw actuator threaded in said bore; a split sleeve about said actuator and rotatably interlocked with said main body portion; an outer shell engaging said split sleeve to main ain the parts thereof together and for rotation thereof with said outer shell; means interconnecting said split sleeve and actuator to efiect rotation of the actuator upon rotation of said split sleeve and outer shell, rotation of said actuator thereby effecting extension and retraction movements thereof by its threaded mounting in said main body portion; a cosmetic cartridge including an elongated holder and a cosmetic stick therein movable longitudinally relative thereto; means for mounting said holder on said main bodyportion; and means engaging said actuator with said cosmetic stick for movement thereof by said actuator.

A cosmetic stick dispensing device comprising: a main body portion having a threaded bore therein; a screw actuator threaded in said bore; a split sleeve about said actuator and rotatably interlocked with said main body portion; an outer shell engaging said split sleeve to maintain the parts thereof together and for rotation thereof with said outer shell; means interconnecting said split sleeve and actuator to elfect rotation of the actuator upon rotation of said split sleeve and outer shell, rotation of said actuator thereby efiecting extension and retraction movements thereof by its threaded mounting in said main body portion; a cosmetic cartridge including an elongated holder and a cosmetic stick therein movable longitudinally relative thereto; means for mounting said holder on said main body portion; means interlocking said holder with said main body portion to prevent removal of the cosmetic cartridge except when said actuator is substantialiy in fully retracted position; and means engaging said actuator with said cosmetic stick for movement there of by said actuator in opposite directions.

A cosmetic stick dispensing device comprising: a main body portion having a threaded bore therein; a screw actuator threaded in said bore; a split sleeve about said actuator and rotatably interlocked with said main body portion; an outer shell engaging said split sleeve to maintain the parts thereof together and for rotation thereof with said outer shell; means interconnecting said split sleeve and actuator to effect rotation of the actuator upon rotation of said split sleeve and outer shell, rotation of said actuator thereby effecting extension and retraction movements thereof by its threaded mounting in said main body portion; a cosmetic cartridge including an elongated holder and a cosmetic stick therein movable longitudinally relative thereto; means for mounting said holder on said main body portion; means interlocking said holder to said main body portion to prevent separation thereof except when said actuator is in substantially fully retracted position; and means interlocking said actuator with said cosmetic stick when it is out of its fully retracted position to provide for movement of the cosmetic stick in opposite directions with said actuator and preventing removal of the cosmetic stick from the actuator except when the actuator is in its substantially fully retracted position.

A cosmetic refill cartridge comprising: an elongated hollow holder; a cup member in said holder; means interlocking said member with the holder to positively prevent relative rotation therebetween while permitting movement of the member axially of the holder; a cosmetic stick mounted in said member so as to be movable therewith in opposite directions am'ally of said holder, said member having a rearwardly projecting skirt; and means on said skirt for engagement by actuating means for retracting the member and stick inwardly of the holder.
17. A cosmetic refill cartridge comprising: an elongated hollow holder; 21 cup member in said holder and interlocked therewith to prevent relative rotation therebetween while permitting movement of the member axially of the holder; and a cosmetic stick mounted in said member so as to be movable therewith in opposite directions axially of said holder, said member having a earwardly projecting skirt adapted for engagement by actuating means for moving the member and stick, said skirt including an inwardly directed flange forming a chamber between itself and said cosmetic stick within which the actuating means is disposable.
18. A cosmetic refill cartridge comprising: an elongated hollow holder; a cup member in said holder; means interlocking said member with the holder to positively prevent relative rotation therebetwen while permitting movement of the member axially of the holder; a cos- 2 l metic stick mounted in said member so as to be movable therewith in opposite directions axially of said holder, said member having a rearwardly projecting skirt; means on said skirt for engagement by actuating means for retracting the member and stick inwardly of the holder, said member having an opening therethrough; and a disc forwardly of said skirt for closing said opening whereby said stick may be directly potted in said holder and member.

Claims (1)

1. A DISPENSING DEVICE COMPRISING: AN ELONGATED MAIN BODY; AN ELONGATED ACTUATOR DISPOSED IN SAID BODY; ROTATABLE MEANS FOR EFFECTING EXTENSDION AND RETRACTION MOVEMENTS OF THE ACTUATOR RELATIVE TO THE MAIN BODY; AN ELONGATED MATERIAL CARTRIDGE REMOVABLY MOUNTED AT ITS REAR PORTION ON SAID MAIN BODY, THE MATERIAL IN SAID CARTRIDGE BEING MOVABLE LONGITUDINALLY THEREOF UPON MOVEMENT OF SAID ACTUATOR; AND INTERLOCK MEANS OPERABLE WHEN THE ACTUATOR IS FORWARD OF ITS FULLY RETRACTED POSITION FOR INTERLOCKING THE MATERIAL CARTRIDGE TO THE MAIN BODY TO PREVENT ITS REMOVAL THEREFROM EXCEPT WHEN THE ACTUATOR IS SUBSTANTIALLY IN FULLY RETRACTED POSITION.
