Application filed April 11, 1884. (No model.) V 9 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hnnrrnnn A. SCHIR- MER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails and Screws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to means for securing strips of wood or other material to suitable backing or foundation; and it consists in adevice that will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of my device, and Figs. 2 and 8 are elevations of modifications of the same.
My device combines in an integer a nail and screw. For instance, in Fig. l, I show a screw, a, and nail 1), combined with an intersecting central collar or bearing, 0, to receive a suitable driving-instrument, by means of which the screw is forced into the backing. Fig. 3 shows the nail part b provided with barbs or serrations. Fig. 2 shows a double-pronged nail and screw combined, the central part, 0, being slitted, as at (Z, to take a screw-driver.
As before stated, my device is to be used where strips are to be attached to backing, and it is especially useful where the securing medium would otherwise have to project through the strips, so as to mar the appearance of the work. \Vhere long strips are to be secured at several points it is only necessary to drive the screws into the backing by a wrench or screw-driver,according to the form used, and then to drive the strips onto the nails with a hammer.
I am aware of the German Patent, No. 21,114, of 1882, wherein is shown a combined nail and screw analogous to that form of my device represented in Fig. l of my drawings, the difference consisting in the fact that in said German patent a portion only of the screw part is threaded, while in my device in each and every form thereof the screw-threads extend the entire length of the screw part from the point to the collar or central bearing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A double fastening device consisting of a nail pointing in one direction and a screw pointing in the opposite direction, having threads its entire length from point to collar, together with a central hearing or hold for the driving-instrument, the nail, screw, and bearing composing an integer, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of-lVis cousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
