CONTROLLABLY ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING MEANS Filed Oct. 18, 1963 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG. IO
INVENTOR. FRANCIS FREDA United States Patent 3,222,052 CONTRGLLABLY ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING MEANS Francis Freda, 1522 N. Boylston St, Los Angeles, Calif. Filed Oct. 18, 1963, Ser. No. 317,267 12 Claims. (Cl. 26969) Generally speaking, the present invention relates to a controllably adjustable mounting means (which, in one exemplary form, may comprise a platform type of mounting means, although not specifically so limited in all forms of the invention) which is provided with means for attaching same with respect to an auxiliary support member (which, in one exemplary form, may comprise the conventional platform of a drill press, although not specifically so limited in all forms of the invention) and which is also provided with means for mounting an object (such as a work-piece which is to be drilled by a drill press or the like, although not specifically so limited in all forms of the invention) in a selected relationship with respect to said auxiliary support member (or conventional drill press platform in that form of the invention where the apparatus is cooperable with respect to a conventional drill press).
It should be noted that the mounting means of the present invention is adjustable in a translatory manner in two mutually perpendicular directions which would normally be front-to-back and vice versa and side-to-side, both in a horizontal plane, when the apparatus cooperates with respect to a conventional drill press, as mentioned above. This would, of course, make it possible to mount a work-piece which is to be drilled (usually by way of a vice or other clamping means carried by the mounting means and controllably adjustably clamped onto said work-piece) so that the conventional power-rotated drill bit of the drill press can be moved downwardly into drilling relationship with respect to any portion of said Work-piece and in virtually any position or orientation thereof, whereby to bring about exactly a particular desired type of drilling operation with respect to said workpiece.
I am aware of the fact that some measure of adjustment of the position of a work-piece can be effected by adjustment thereof with respect to the conventional auxiliary supporting platform of a conventional drill press. However, such adjustment is of limited extent and requires the use of multipositioned attachment means for a vise or a clamp and is not capable of the major extent and type of positional adjustment of the work-piece which can be achieved through the use of the present invention.
Furthermore, the novel apparatus of the present invention is provided with two different extension and retraction actuator means for quickly and easily adjusting the position of the portion of the apparatus of the present invention adapted to mount a vise or other clamping means, and a workpiece carried thereby, in either of two mutually perpendicular translatory directions (usually front-to-back and vice versa and side-to-side, both in a horizontal plane, although not specifically so limited in all forms of the invention). This makes it possible to mount a work-piece in a vise carried on an upper mounting panel member of the apparatus of the present invention and to then, by merely operating either of the two mutually perpendicular extension and retraction actuator means, move the work-piece with respect to the downwardly directed drill bit of the conventional drill preSs until it is in exactly the desired relationship. Thus, a great variety of drilling jobs can be done rapidly and multiple repositioning operations can be done with a minimum of time and effort being involved. In addition,
the two mutually perpendicular extension and retraction actuator means are each of a type which positively holds said upper mounting panel member and the vise or other clamping means attached thereto in any adjusted position without any play, instability, or wobble."
Also, it should be noted that, if desired, said two mutually perpendicular extension and retraction actuator means may be provided with scale and index means for indicating precisely what extent of translatory adjusting movement of said upper mounting panel member has been effected, thus making it possible to repeat a positioning adjustment of said upper mounting panel member at any time when desired by merely noting the scale and index readings of each of the two different extension and retraction actuator means and then subsequently operating them until said scale and index means have the same readings again. In other words, this provides for repeatability in the positioning operation as many times as desired and operated after intervals as long as desired.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the novel controllably adjustable mounting apparatus of the present invention in no way interferes with conventional and normal operation of the conventional drill press and, therefore, need not be removed therefrom when not in use, but may be left in place at all times, if desired.
With the above points in mind, it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel adjustable mounting means embodying any or all of the features referred to hereinbefore, either generically or specifically, individually or in combination, and which is of relatively simple, inexpensive, easy-to-install, easy-to-operate, construction capable of mass manufacture at relatively low cost whereby to be conducive to widespread use thereof.
Further objects are implicit in the detailed description which follows hereinafter (which is to be considered as exemplary of, but not specifically limiting, the present invention) and said objects will be apparent to persons skilled in the art after a careful study of the detailed description which follows hereinafter.
For the purpose of clarifying the nature of the present invention, one exemplary embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the hereinbelow-described figures of the accompanying two sheets of drawings and is described in detail hereinafter.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one exemplary embodiment of the present invention wherein it is cooperable with respect to a conventional drill press (although it is to be specifically understood that this exemplary only and that the invention is not specifically so limited in all forms thereof). This view shows the controllably adjustable mounting means of the present invention in mounted, fastened or attached relationship with respect to an auxiliary support member comprising the conventional support platform of the conventional drill press whereby to place the upper mounting panel member of the novel apparatus of the present invention under the downwardly directed drill bit of said conventional drill press.
FIG. 2 is a top View taken in the direction of the arrows 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary top view, generally similar to a portion of FIG. 2, but illustrating the clamping vise in a different attached, mounted, or positioned relationship with respect to the upper mounting panel member of the controllably adjustable mounting means of the present invention.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, taken in the direction of the arrows 4-4 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view comprising a cross-section, taken in the direction of the arrows 5-5 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 6 is a view generally similar to FIG. 2 but comprises a bottom view rather than a top view.
FIG. 7 is an enlarged view, partly in section and partly in elevation, taken in the direction of the arrows 77 of FIG. 6.
FIG. 8 is an enlarged staggered plane view, partly in elevation and partly in section, taken in the direction of the arrows 8-8 of FIG. 7.
FIG. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, taken in the direction of the arrows 99 of FIG. 7, and illustrates the details of the lateral or transverse extension and retraction actuator, means, showing same fragmentarily.
FIG. 10 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken in the direction of th arrows 1010 of FIG. 8 and illustrates the details of the longitudinal extension and retraction actuator means, showing same fragmentarily.
FIG. 11 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken in the direction of the arrows 1111 of FIG. 7 and illustrates a representative detail of the attachment of the upper mounting panel member at the sides thereof with respect to a pair of laterally spaced longitudinal attachment members which have front and rear portions con nected to the outer rectangular telescopic framework means for horizontal adjustment in either of two mutually perpendicular translatory ways, shown as comprising front-to-back adjustment (and vice versa) and side-toside adjustment in either direction.
Generally speaking, the controllably adjusting mounting means of the present invention comprises telescopic framework means and a mounting panel member mounted with respect to portions of said telescopic framework means for adjustment in two mutually perpendicular directions, said mounting panel member being provided with means for mounting cooperation with respect to work-piece clamping means (such as a vise or C-clamp) for clamping a work-piece thereto, and said telescopic framework means being effectively provided with attachment means for fixed attachment thereof with respect to an auxiliary support member (such as a conventional platform of a conventional drill press or the like, although not specifically so limited).
For exemplary purposes, invention is illustrated in the drawings and will be described specifically hereinafter in a particular form wherein it is adapted for attachment with respect to a conventional platform means of a conventional drill press with the mounting panel member of the invention lying in a substantially horizontal plane for adjustment in either a front-to-rear direction (or vice versa) or a side-to-side direction whereby to correspondingly move with respect to an overlying drill bit of the drill press. However, it should be clearly understood that this is for exemplary purposes, and the invention is not to be construed as specifically limited to this arrangement in all forms of the invention.
In the exemplary form illustrated, a conventional drill press is generally designated by the reference numeral 21 in FIG. 1 and includes a conventional base 22 adapted to rest upon a horizontal surface, a conventional upstanding cylindrical mounting post 23, a conventional drill press platform 24 vertically adjustably and controllably lockably mounted on the upstanding cylindrical mounting post 23, a motor 25, a drill bit holder assembly 26 (which is adapted to adjustably receive and mount any of a plurality of downwardly directed drill bits such as the one shown at 27), power transmission means (not shown) coupling the motor 25 with respect to the drill bit holder assembly 26, a cover, housing or shroud 28 overlying said power transmission means, and a manually operated rotary handle means 29 which is adapted to vertically move the drill bit holder assembly 26 and drill bit 27 for lowering same for drilling a work-piece when desired and for raising same away therefrom when desired. All of this is conventional and, therefore, will not be described in detail.
The novel controllably adjustable mounting means of the present invention is generally designated by the reference numeral 31 in FIG. 1, which indicates its cooperative relationship with respect to the drill press 21 wherein it is effectively attached with respect to the drill press platform 24 in a manner such as to controllably adjustably underlie the drill bit holder assembly 26 and drill bit 27 so that the vise 32 (which is removably adjustably carried by the mounting apparatus 31 of the present invention) may hold a work-piece (not shown) in a desired relationship with respect to the drill bit holding assembly 26 and drill bit 27 for drilling said work-piece in virtually any desired manner and at virtually any desired location.
In the exemplary form of the invention illustrated, the mounting means 31 of the present invention includes the above-mentioned telescopic framework means, which is generally designated by the reference numeral 33 and which is shown as being of substantially rectangular configuration mounted in a substantially horizontal plane and which includes two longitudinal, laterally spaced, substantially parallel, outer tubular sleeve elements 34, two longitudinally spaced, laterally directed, substantially parallel, outer tubular sleeve elements 35, two longitudinally directed, laterally spaced, substantially parallel inner slide elements 37 longitudinally slidably received within said two longitudinally outer tubular sleeve elements 34 for longitudinal sliding movement relative thereto, and two longitudinally spaced, laterally directed, inner slide elements 38 laterally slidably received within the corresponding two longitudinally spaced, laterally directed, outer tubular sleeve elements 35 for lateral sliding movement with respect thereto.
In the exemplary form of the invention illustrated, each of said inner slide elements 37 and 38 is effectively connected together and comprises a substantially rectangular inner member carrying on each of the four legs thereof the corresponding ones of said four outer sleeve members as indicated at 34 and 35 whereby to provide for relative longitudinal movement and relative lateral movement between said inner slide members and said outer sleeve members.
In the exemplary form the invention illustrated, the hereinbefore-mentioned mounting panel member of the adjustable mounting means 31 of the present invention is indicated by the reference numeral 39 and is of substantially rectangular configuration having a flat upper surface 41 and is rigidly firmly attached with respect to said laterally spaced, longitudinally directed, outer sleeve elements 34 for longitudinal sliding movement therewith. In the specific example illustrated, said rigid attachment is provided by the welding indicated at 42. However, various other attachment means of either a controllably disengageable type or a non-disengageable type may be employed in lieu thereof.
It should also be noted that said horizontally directed flat planar mounting panel member 39 has side edge portions 39E which extend substantially laterally beyond the underlying telescopic framework means 33 for cooperation with edgemounting clamp means when sheet material is to be fastened in immediately superimposed relationship with respect to said flat top surface 41 of said mounting panel member 39. This is usually when such sheet material is to be drilled and is too large to be held by a vise, such as is indicated at 32 which is, of course, removed when such edge-clamping of said sheet material is accomplished by the use of C-clamp means, or the like, fastened to said sheet material and either or both of the edges 3915, as desired. Such C-clamp means is not shown since such structures, and substantial equivalents thereof, are well known in the art.
The mounting means 31 also includes a pair of laterally spaced, longitudinal attachment members 43 having front and rear portions 43F and 43R, respectively, controllably laterally adjustably connected to said longitudinally spaced, laterally directed, outer sleeve elements 35 for lateral sliding movement therewith, and being additionally provided with a plurality of side fastening means, one of which is indicated at 40 in FIG. 7, for fastening each of said longitudinal attachment members 43 to a different one of the two sides of said conventional auxiliary drill press platform 24 by direct attachment to the edge flanges 24E thereof. This acts to firmly mount the entire controllably adjustable mounting means 31 of the present invention with respect to said conventional drill press platform 24 and immediately above, and in symmetrical horizontally disposed relationship with respect thereto.
Incidentally, it should be noted that each of said front and rear portions 43F and 43R which connect to the front and rear outer tubular sleeve members 35 are controllably laterally adjustable by means of four lateral adjustment means, generally designated by the reference numeral 44A and best shown in FIG. 5 wherein an end portion 43R of one of said longitudinal attachment members 43 is shown laterally slidably mounted in a rectangular receiving tube 44T and is adapted to be locked in any desired laterally adjusted position by means of the locking set screw 445. Of course, the showing of FIG. 5 with respect to a single one of said adjustment means is representative of all four and no further detailed showing of the other three is necessary. This allows the lateral spacing between the two longitudinal attachment members 43 to be adjusted for effective cooperation with the two side fianges 24E of different sizes of conventional drill press platforms 24.
The apparatus of the present invention also includes two different manually operable mutually perpendicular extension and retraction actuator means, one of which comprises a longitudinal extension and retraction actuator means, as indicated generally at 45, and the other of which comprises a lateral extension and retraction actuator means, as indicated generally at 46.
The longitudinal actuator means 45 includes two relatively movable portions, one of which comprises the rotary lead screw 47 which is rotatively mounted by hearing means 48 so as to be relatively rotatable with respect to, but longitudinally immovable with respect to, coupling means 49 which is rigidly connected with respect to said rectangular inner framework comprising the four inner slide members 37 and 38, adjacent to the front end thereof. The other of said longitudinally movable portions of said longitudinal actuator 45 comprises the interiorly threaded follower member 51 which is threadedly mounted on the exteriorly threaded lead screw 7 and which is connected by another coupling structure 52 to the laterally spaced longitudinally directed outer tubular sleeve members 34. It will be understood that manual rotation of the lead screw 47 by rotating the crank handle 53 will cause the interiorly threaded follower member 51 to move longitudinally relative to the rectangular inner framework comprising the four inner slide members 37 and 38, whereby to cause the upper mounting panel member 39 (which is carried by said outer longitudinal sleeve members 34) to be longitudinally moved either forwardly or rearwardly, as desired, with respect to the drill press 21 and the drill bit holding assembly 26 and drill bit 27 thereof.
The above-mentioned lateral extension and retraction actuator means 46 also includes two relatively movable portions, one of which comprises the rotary lead screw 54 which is rotatively mounted by hearing means 55 for rotation but not for longitudinal movement and with said bearing means 55 being coupled by a coupling member 56 to one of the side-positioned inner slide members 37 by way of a longitudinal slot 57 in the bottom side of the corresponding outer tubular sleeve member 34. This is best shown in FIG. 6. The other one of said relatively movable portions of said lateral extension and retraction actuator means 46 comprises the interiorly threaded follower element 58 which is threadedly mounted on, and in engagement with, the exteriorly threaded lead screw 54, and which is coupled by another coupling member 59 to one of the longitudinal attachment members 43 connected to the conventional drill press platform 24. This provides an arrangement such that rotation of the lateral lead screw 54 by manually rotating the crank handle 61, will cause the threaded member 58 to be laterally reciprocated whereby to move the entire rectangular structure (comprising the four inner slide members 37 and 38) in a lateral direction relative to the longitudinal attachment members 43 and the conventional drill press platform 24 attached thereto. This, of course, causes the upper mounting panel member 39 (which is carried by the outer sleeve members 34) to correspondingly be laterally shifted whereby to move the vise 32 (or an edge-mounted C-clamp carried by either of the edges 39E as previously described laterally with respect to the drill bit holding assembly 26 and the drill bit 27 whereby to correspondingly shift a work-piece (not shown) adapted to be held by said vise or C-clamp so as to make it possible to drill said work-piece at an exact laterally selected location.
It should be noted that, in one preferred form of the invention, the longitudinal lead screw 47 and threaded follower means 51 and the lateral lead screw 54 and threaded follower means 58 may be provided with thread means of a positively engaging type such as Acme threads, square threads, or various other types of threads characterized by a minimum of looseness and play therehetween whereby to positively and firmly position and maintain the upper mounting panel means 39 in a selected position into which it has been adjusted, with an absolute minimum of looseness or wobble being present in the mounting thereof.
It should be noted that, in the exemplary form of the invention illustrated, the mounting panel means 39 may be provided with mounting means for mounting cooperation with respect to the fastening elements of some type of clamping structure which is adapted to be fastened thereto for the holding of a work-piece in a selected position with respect to the drill bit 27. In the exemplary form illustrated said mounting means may comprise mounting aperture means, taking the form of a plurality of apertures such as indicated at 62, extending downwardly from the flat top surface 41 of the upper mounting panel 39 and adapted to receive corresponding positioning pins 63 carried by the bottom of the vise 32. Certain of said apertures may be threaded, as indicated at 62T, may be adapted to receive and threadedly engage threaded fastening screws 64 carried by the apertured ear portions 65 of the vise 32 and adapted for quick attachment and detachment of the vise 32 with respect to the mounting panel 39. This is facilitated by the enlar-ged finger-engageable portions 66 of said screws 64 which greatly speed up the fastening and detachment thereof. Incidentally, it should be noted that there are a number of the mounting apertures 62 which make it possible to position the device in any of several different positions, two different representative ones of which are illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3. Furthermore, it should be noted that the fastening screws 64 may be used alone, without positioning pins 63, or vice versa, in certain forms of the invention.
It should be understood that the figures and the specific description thereof set forth in this application are for the purpose of illustrating the present invention and are not to be construed as limiting the present invention to the precise and detailed specific structure shown in the figures and specifically described hereinbefore. Rather, the real invention is intended to include substantially equivalent constructions embodying the basic teachings and inventive concept of the present invention.
