An object of this invention is to provide a stapling machine of the character described formed with an arcuate slot through which extends a pin assembling various parts of the machine housing and acting to stop upward swinging motion of a handle pivoted to the housing prior to depressing the handle to drive a staple. The housing, in accordance with the present invention, includes a member made of plastic formed with a stop bump or lug to stop the downward depressing movement of the handle for raising the plunger and loading a drive spring, when the plunger has been raised to a position where the spring is fully loaded and the plunger released for a staple driving operation, said pin also serving to stop depressing movement of the handle, should said stop lug be broken or worn or otherwise fail to stop depression of said handle.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described, a latch for releasably raising the plunger slidably and substantially nonpivotally mounted on the actuating handle by means of a pair of pin and slot connections, one of which comprises a pin on the housing, and on which the handle is pivoted, and said latch being connected to the handle by spring means which biases the latch toward engagement with the plunger, the construction being such that after the handle is depressed and the plunger is raised and released for a drive operation by a loaded spring, said handle may be released, to also lower the latch and said latch will be pushed back against the tension of the spring which connects the latch with the handle to permit the latch to be snapped beneath a shoulder on the plunger, so as to be ready to again raise the plunger the next time the handle is depressed.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described, a housing comprising a pair of steel side plates on opposite sides of a plastic piece sandwiched therebetween and assembled therewith by transverse pins, and said plastic piece having a means whereby said plastic piece aids in preventing said side plates from becoming offset one from the other.
Still another object of this invention is to provide in a stapling machine of the character described, a common means to space the side plates of the housing and act as an abutment for the upper end of the plunger driving spring.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described an improved plunger comprising a plunger blade having wings slidable in slots in the housing and attached to a plunger blade holder by a pair of rivets, said blade having a hole between the rivets and said holder having an outwardly pressed portion projecting into said opening whereby to facilitate accurate assembly of the blade and holder.
A still further object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described, a housing having a hand hole so arranged that the upper side of the staple magazine is exposed, and said upper side of the staple magazine having a top longitudinal slot so located that one can see how much of the staple strip is left in the magazine and also to facilitate cleaning the magazine.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a staple device of the character described provided with improved releasable clip means to hold the staple pusher inplace.
A still further object of this invention is to provide in a stapler of the character described a housing having an operating handle pivoted thereto, a stop on the housing and a bail pivoted to the housing and engageable with the handle to hold it on the stop, in the down or depressed position of the handle to compact the stapler for shipment and to hold the handle against movement; improved means for causing the bail to snap into an unused position against the housing when pushed toward such position to ensure against the bail projecting out from the housing when the stapler is being operated.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable stapling device of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, easy to assemble, positive in action and practical and eflicient to a high degree in use.-
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a hand operated staple tacker embodying the invention. The same comprises a housing 11 provided with a pair of similar symmetrically disposed metal side plate members 12. Each side plate member 12 has a fiat vertical wall portion 13 provided with a hand hole 14, and having a lower straight horizontal edge 15 from the rear end relation. Said fingers 18 have upper edges 20, and are formed with registering notches 21 forming a slot 22 below said edges 20 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The lower edges 20a of fingers 18 have registering inner corner notches 23 forming a groove or slot 24.
Each flat wall portion 13 is also formed with an upwardly and forwardly inclined edge 25 extending from said portion 17 thereof, merging into a top horizontal edge 26 extending forwardly to an upwardly and forwardly curved edge 27. V
The hand hole 14 in flat wall portion 13, forms a lower horizontal edge 28 from the ends of which extend upwardly, front and rear edges 29, 30 merging with an upper horizontal edge 31. The four corners of the hand hole are curved as shown in the drawing.
At the front end of each fiat wall portion 13 is an outwardly extending shoulder 32 from which extends forwardly, a flat vertical front end wall portion 33. Wall portion 33 has a pair of rearwardly extending ears 34, 35. Flat wall portion 33 has a front vertical edge 36 formed with a rearwardly recessed vertical groove 37 in the upper portion thereof, for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Extending inwardly from the upper ends of fiat portions 33 are top horizontal flanges 39 having inner substantially abutting edges 40 formed with registering notches forming a hole 41.
Each fiat wall portion 13 is formed with a hole 45 just forwardly of the lower edge of portion 17; with a hole 46 above the hand hole 14 and rearwardly thereof, and with a hole 47 above the hand hole and rearwardly of the front end thereof.
Said flat wall portion 13 is also formed with a small hole 49 disposed above hole 46. It is also formed with a hole 50 rearwardly of shoulder 32 and below car 35.
Ears 34, 35 are formed with holes 51, 52 respectively.
Flat wall portion 33 is also formed, near the upper end thereof, with a horizontal slot 53 and further down with a slot 54 having an upper portion 55 and a lower portion 56.
Said flat wall portion 33 also has a lower horizontal edge 58 at the level of lower edge 15 of fiat wall portion 13.
Interposed between the side plate members 12 is a member 60, preferably made of molded plastic. Member 60 may be made of a pair of hollow ribbed and pinned together halves 61, 62 having mutually contacting surfaces 63 at a vertical longitudinal central plane. Of course, if desired, member 60 may be made as a single piece and of any desired suitable material.
Member 60 comprises a portion 60a disposed between the portions of plate members 12 which lie above the hand hole 14, and it has a forwardly and downwardly curved front end 60b at the upper end of edges 29, and a rear downwardly extending portion 600 at the upper end of edge 30 and between the plate members 12. Said member 60 projects beyond edges 29, 31, 30 having outwardly extending beads 60d overlapping said edges. Said member 60 also has an outer bead 60:? extending beyond the inner edges of plate members 12, at the top and partially around the rear thereof. Said member 60 also has an upwardly extending lug 62 near its rear end for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Plates 12 are formed with inwardly extending lips or beads 12b at their outer edges, disposed below beads 60d, and received in correspondingly formed grooves in members 61 and 62.
Plate members 12 are attached to member 60 by a pair of cross rivets 63, 64 passing through openings 46, 47 respectively, on the plate members, and through registering openings in member 60.
Member 60 together with the strap portions 12a of plate members 12 above the hand hole constitute a handle for the device. The upper edges 20 of fingers 18 engage lower edges 60 of the rear portion of member 60. Thus,
member 60 aids in preventing the plate members 12 from being offset one with respect to the other.
Plate members 12 are also interconnected by a cross bolt 65 passing through openings 45. A transverse rivet 66 passes through openings 50 in plate members 12 to interconnect the latter.
Fitted over the front end of the plate members 12 is a nose piece 70. The same comprises a front wall 71 from which extends rearwardly side walls 72 contacting the outer surfaces of fiat portions 33 of the plate members 12. The front vertical edges 36 of side wall portions 33 contact the inner surface of front wall 71 of nose piece 70. Front wall 71 has a forwardly recessed vertical cen-. tral portion 74 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Said side walls 72 have lower edges 75 at level of edges 58 of side plates 12. Said side walls 72 have rearwardly extending lower cars 76 overlapping ears 34 and upper ears 77 overlapping ears 35. Bars 76, 77 have holes registering with holes 51, 52 respectively, of plate members 12 and receiving cross bolts 76a, 77a. Spacer sleeves 76b, 77b may be carried by said bolts.
The top flanges 39 of plate members 12 are disposed at a somewhat higher level than the upper edges of front wall 71 and side walls 72 of the nose piece. Side walls 72 of the nose piece are cut around the underside of slot 54 in fiat portions 33 of side plate members 12. Front wall 71 of the nose piece is formed with a pair of vertical slots 80 for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
A lower transverse horizontal stop member 81 111218 wings 81a projecting into slot portions 56. A cushioning plate 82 on said stop plate has wings 83 projecting into slot portions 55. A second cushion plate 84 may be mounted on cushion plate 82. On the stop 81, and cushions 82, 84 is a plunger 85 comprising a plunger holder 86 to which is fixed a plunger blade 87.
The plunger holder 86 is cup shaped and comprises a bottom wall 86a, a front wall 86b, side walls 861': and a rear wall 86d. Side walls 860 are formed with rearwardly extending hooks 88 having lower upwardly and rearwardly inclined edges 88a and upper reawardly and downwardly curved edges 88b. The front wall 86b of the plunger holder 86 is formed with a central, outwardly recessed circular lug 89 and with rivet holes 90, 91 above and belowv said lug. Fixed to the front side of front wall 86b is the plunger blade 87. Said blade 87 has at its upper end, wings 87a received in grooves 37 at the front ends of plate members 12. Plunger blade 87 is slidably mounted to move up and down with the plunger holder 86, and contacts the inner surface of front wall 71 of nose piece 70. Rivets 90a, 91a serve to fix the plunger blade 87 to the plunger holder 86. The front heads 90b, 91b of the rivets project into the groove 74a formed by the forwardly recessed portion 74 of the front wall of the nose piece. When the plunger holder 86 is resting on the bottom stops, the lower edge of the plunger blade 87 is at the lower end of front wall 71 of the nose piece and between the slots 80.
A top horizontal cross stop plate 92 has side Wings 92a projecting into slots 53 in portions 33 of side plates 12.
A central guide pin 92b riveted to stop plate 92 projects downwardly therefrom. The opening 40 is located directly above the guide pin 92b. A coil compressionv spring 95 is interposed between the plunger holder 86 and the stop plate 92. The lower end of the spring presses down on the bottom of the plunger holder 86. The guide pin 92b projects into the upper end of the spring.
In the lower end of the machine 10 is a staple magazine 100. Said magazine may comprise a magazine body 101 having a bottom wall 102, the undersurface of which is at the level of edges 15. Extending upwardly from bottom wall 102 are vertical side walls 103 spaced inwardly of side plates 12 and having inwardly extending horizontal top flanges 104 forming a longitudinal slot therebetween. Side walls 103 have lugs 103a at their front ends projecting into slots 80. Said side walls also have rear upstanding ears 103]) formed with holes through which bolt 65 passes.
Fixed to the inside surface of bottom wall 102 is a staple guide channel 105 having a bottom wall 106 and upstanding side walls 107 spaced inwardly from side walls 103 and having upper edges 108 on which the staple strip slides with the legs of the staples between side walls 103 and 107.
The front edges of side walls 107 are spaced from front wall 71 of the nose piece 70 by the thickness of the plunger blade so that when the blade descends, it will drive the foremost staple in the staple strip.
The flanges 104 are above the lower edges 28 at the hand hole, so that the top of the staple magazine is exposed whereby the operator can see through the slot between flanges 104 to determine how much of the staple strip is left, and to facilitate cleaning of the staple magazine.
A staple strip pusher 110 for pushing a staple strip 111 in the magazine, comprises a rod 112 extending longitudinally with the channel. On the channel 105 is slidably mounted a slider 113 adapted to engage the rear end of the staple strip. Said slider 113 has depending ears 114 having holes through which the rod 112 passes. A coil tension spring 115 on the rod 112 presses against the rear ear. Fixed to the rear end of rod 112 is a vertical back plate 116 having forwardly extending side flanges 117 straddling the side plate members 12 at their rear ends. Plate 116 has an upwardly extending hook 118 extending around the portions of fingers 18 between slot 22 and groove 24. The coil spring presses against the inner surface of back plate 116 and normally keeps said plate spaced from the rear edges 16 of plates 12. Thus spring 115 also biases the slider 113 forwardly against the staple strip. Said spring also keeps plate 116 in the plane of fingers 18, with the hook 118 engaged with the fingers 18.
The plate 116 may be pushed forwardly to disengage the hook 118. Said plate may then be pressed down to clear fingers 18 and then pulled forward to pull out the pusher 110.
Improved means is provided to actuate the plunger 85. To this end, there is rotatably mounted on pin 66, an actuating member 120. Said member 120 comprises side walls 121 interconnected by a top wall 122. The forward end of member 120 is located between the side plate members 12, and the side walls 121 are formed with suitable bearing openings 123 registering with openings 50 in side plates 12, and through which pin 66 passes. Said side walls 121 are also formed with arcuate slots 125 through which pin or bolt 77a and sleeve 77b pass. The actuating member 120 comprises a rearwardly extending handle 127 forming an extension of top wall 122 and side flanges 121. On the sleeve 77b is a coil torsion spring 130 having one radial end 131 engaging beneath handle 127. The opposite radial end 132 of spring 130 engages in a longitudinal slot or groove 133 formed in member 60 at its upper side, between portion 600 and lug 62 and at the split 63. The bottom of groove 133 is inclined upwardly and rearwardly as shown in FIG. 2. When the handle is up (under the influence of spring 130) sleeve 77b is at the upper rear end of slot 125 (the centerline of the curvature of the slots is at the axis of pin 77a). The pin 77a and its sleeve 77b thus act as a stop for the upward or released position of the actuating member 120. When the handle 127 is pressed down its underside will strike the top of bump or lug 62 to stop rotation of member 120 before sleeve 77x is at the lower front end of the slots 125. However, if the top end of lug 62 should wear away or break, downward movement of the handle will be stopped by said pin 77a and its sleeve 77b bottoming at the lower front end of the slots 125.
Extending forwardly from the top wall 122 is a downwardly and forwardly curved tongue 135 which moves under top flanges 39 when the handle 1.27 is raised, and covers the space between the top wall and said flanges when the handle is raised, so that nothing can get caught in such space.
The side flanges 121 of the actuating member have lower edges 136 which are inclined upwardly and forwardly when the handle is fully depressed. The lower end portions 137 of said flanges 121 are preferably oifset inwardly from the upper portions of said flanges as shown in FIG. 4. Said portions 137 carry a cross pin 138 having outer ends projecting beyond said portions. Pin 138 is located near the front end of portions 137.
Straddling the underside of said portions 137 is a latch 140 having a bottom web 141 from which extend upwardly, parallel flanges 142 disposed at the outer sides of said portions. Flanges 142 are formed with front slots 143 parallel to web 141, receiving the outward extensions of pin 138. Said flanges 142 are also formed with rear slots 144 also parallel to web 141 and through which passes the pin or bolt 66. Thus, the latch 140 is slidable on the actuating member 120. A coil tension spring 145 interconnects pin 138 with the rear end of web 141 and tends to project the latch 140 forwardly. Said latch has at its front end, a pair of fingers 147, oflset outwardly from flanges 142 and adapted to engage edges 88a of hooks 88 when the handle is depressed. When the handle is up, and the plunger 85 is up, fingers 147 are disposed below hooks 88, as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing.
However, as the handle is depressed, fingers 147 will engage beneath hooks 88 and raise the plunger to compress spring 95 and hence load the plunger, as the plunger blade is pulled up sufliciently to clear the staple strip and allow the foremost staple to be moved by the pusher against the front wall of the nose piece.
Just before the handle 127 contacts bump 62, the fingers 147 clear or move past hooks 88 and the loaded spring quickly moves the plunger down for a stapling operation. When the handle is then released, the curved or cammed underedges 14711 of fingers 147 contact cammed or curved edges 88b of hooks 88 and said latch 140 is moved backwards, tensioning spring 145. When the fingers 147 are beneath the hooks 88, said tensioned spring will project said latch forwardly.
Means is provided to hold the handle down when the stapler is not in use. To this end, halves 61, 62 are formed with horizontally aligned holes 61a, 62a located somewhat at a higher level than openings 49 in plates 12, and directly above such openings. A bail 150 of metal wire, comprises a transverse intermediate portion 151 from which extend side arms 152 formed with inwardly extending inclined pintles or fingers 153 extending through openings 49 and 61a, 62a. When the handle 127 is up and the bail 150 is swung down and back, in the position of FIGS. 2 and 5, the fingers 153 are inclined upwardly and inwardly, their outer lowered ends being located in the lower openings 49 in plate members 12, and their inner higher ends being located in the higher openings 61a, 62a. The bail 150 may be swung up to engage with the outer end of the handle to hold it down and retain the actuating member 120 in inoperative position, as shown in FIG. 1 with the handle 127 somewhat above lug or bump 62. When it is desired to release the actuating member for operation, the handle is pushed all the way down to contact lug or bump 62, and the bail is swung back and down. As the bail passes below the horizontal position thereof, it will snap down so that portion 151 thereof contacts fingers 18. This snap down action is caused by the fact that the openings 61a, 62a are above the openings 49 and the fingers 153 being inclined are under tension and tend to move to an intermediate condition. Hence the bail moves to the down position where the fingers are not under tension.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In a stapling device, a housing comprising a pair of opposed side plates formed with hand holes, a member interposed between said plates, above said hand holes, means interconnecting said plates to attach said side plates and member together, said member comprising a pair of similar hollow halves symmetrical about a central longitudinal vertical plane between said plates, said halves being formed with outwardly extending bead portions overlying the adjacent edges of said plates, said plates being formed with inwardly extending lips, and said halves being formed with grooves inwardly of said beads, to receive said lips, a nose piece at the front end of the housing and having a front wall and side flanges straddling said plates, means to attach said nose piece to said plates, an actuating member projecting into said housing and being pivoted to said plates, said actuating member having a handle and stop means on said first mentioned member to limit downward movement of said handle, a plunger in said nose piece and means on the actuating member to move said plunger.
2. In a stapling device, a housing comprising a pair of opposed side plates formed with hand holes, a member interposed between said plates, above said hand holes, means to attach said side plates and member together, a nose piece at the front end of the housing and having a front wall and side flanges straddling said plates, means to attach said nose piece to said plates, an actuating member projecting into said housing and being pivoted to said plates, said actuating member having a handle and stop means on said first mentioned member to limit downward movement of said handle, a plunger in said nose piece and means on the actuating member to move said plunger, said plates having fingers at their rear ends, extending inwardly toward each other and said first mentioned member having shoulder means engaging said fingers to aid in preventing offsetting of said plates relative to one another.
3. In a stapling device, a housing comprising a pair of opposed side plates formed with hand holes, a member interposed between said plates, above said hand holes, means to attach said side plates and member together, a nose piece at the front end of the housing and having a front wall and side flanges straddling said plates, means to attach said nose piece to said plates, an actuating member projecting into said housing and being pivoted to said plates, said actuating member having a handle and stop means on said first mentioned member to limit downward movement of said handle, a plunger in said nose piece and means on theactuating member to move said plunger, and a bail having means engaging openings in said plates and interposed member and hence being pivoted to said plates and interposed member, and said bail having means to engage said handle to keep the handle on said stop, means associated with said plates, interposed member and bail to bias the bail member to rotate in a direction to snap the bail down against said housing to the inoperative position of said bail, and said bail having inwardly extending pintles, inclined upwardly when the bail is in swung down, inoperative position, and said openings in said interposed member receiving said pintles and being disposed at a level somewhat higher than the openings in said plates.
4. In a stapler machine, a housing comprising side plates having front edges formed with vertical grooves, a nose piece attached to the housing and having a front wall contacting said front edges, a plunger cup in the housing, a plunger blade having wings slidably received in said grooves, said blade being riveted to said plunger cup by a pair of vertically spaced rivets, said blade having an opening between said rivets and said cup having an outwardly recessed portion received in said opening.
5. In a stapling machine, a pair of metal side plates formed with hand holes, a member made of plastic interposed between said side plates and above said hand holes, transverse pins passing through aligned holes in said plates and member to attach said plates to opposite sides of said member, and said side plates having integral portions extending inwardly of said side plates, and said interposed member having transverse shoulder means engaging said inwardly extending portions to aid in preventing said side plates from becoming offset one from the other.
6. The combination of claim 5, said interposed member having portions extending beyond edges of portions of said side plates between which the said member is interposed.
7. The combination of claim 6, said interposed member having bead portions overlying said edges.
8. In a stapling device, a housing comprising a pair of opposed side plates formed with hand holes, a member interposed between said plates, above said hand holes, means interconnecting said plates to attach said side plates and member together, said member comprising a pair of similar hollow halves symmetrical about a central longitudinal vertical plane between said plates, said halves being formed with outwardly extending bead portions overlying the adjacent edges of said plates, a nose piece at the front end of the housing and having a front wall and side flanges straddling said plates, means to attach said nose piece to said plates, an actuating member, projecting into said housing and being pivoted to said plates, said actuating member having a handle and stop means on said first mentioned member to limit downward movement of said handle, a plunger in said nose piece and means on the actuating member to move said plunger, said side plates having at their rear ends, fingers extending inwardly toward each other and formed with a slot, a staple pusher in said magazine having a hook portion engaging portions of said fingers and projecting into said slot.

Claims (1)

1. IN A STAPLING DEVICE, A HOUSING COMPRISING A PAIR OF OPPOSED SIDE PLATES FORMED WITH HAND HOLES, A MEMBER INTERPOSED BETWEEN SAID PLATES, ABOVE SAID HAND HOLE, MEANS INTERCONNECTING SAID PLATES TO ATTACH SAID SIDE PLATES AND MEMBER TOGETHER, SAID MEMBERS COMPRISING A PAIR OF SIMLAR HOLLOW HALVES SYMMETRICAL ABOUT A CENTRAL LONGITUDINAL VERTICAL PLANE BETWEEN SAID PLATES, SAID HALVES BEING FORMED WITH OUTWARDLY EXTENDING BEAD PORTIONS OVERLYING THE ADJACENT EDGES OF SAID PLATES, SAID PLATES BEING FORMED WITH INWARDLY EXTENDING LIPS, AND SAID HALVES BEING FORMED WITH GROOVES INWARDLY OF SAID BEADS, TO RECEIVE SAID LIPS, A NOSE PIECE AT THE FRONT END OF THE HOUSING AND HAVING A FRONT WALL AND SIDE FLANGES STRADDLING SAID PLATES, MEANS TO ATTACH SAID NOSE PIECE TO SAID PLATES, AN ACTUATING MEMBER PROJECTING INTO SAID HOUSING AND BEING PIVOTED TO SAID PLATES, SAID ACTUATING MEMBER HAVING A HANDLE AND STOP MEANS ON SAID FIRST MENTIONED MEMBER TO LIMIT DOWNWARD MOVEMENT OF SAID HANDLE, A PLUNGER IN SAID NOSE PIECE AND MEANS ON THE ACTUATING MEMBER TO MOVE SAID PLUNGER.
