UNITED strnTEs PATENT OFFICE.
WM. 0. HICKS, 'OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLIND-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,365, dated May 21, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM CLEVELAND I-IIoKs, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Blind-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of window shutters, with my improved fastening attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with one of the shutters opened.
The object of my present invention is to produce a cheap durable and efficient fastening for window blinds and shutters, which will serve to hold them in position, either when shut or opened; and my invention consists in a spring so attached to the tops of the blinds or shutters that its power will be applied to hold one or both of a pair of blinds or shutters either open or shut.
That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried out the same.
In the said drawings A. A represent a pair of outside window shutters, which are attached to the building by hinges a in the ordinary manner.
To the top ofeach shutter is fastened a plate B from which projects a lug b. A. spiral spring G is connected by a wire 0 with each of these lugs b. As the lugs project beyond the outer face of the shutters the force of the spring 0 tends to hold the shutters closed when they are shut to as in Fig. 1;
but when both shutters or either one of them is opened as in Fig. 2 the spring tends to jointof the hinge, so that the spring will draw with equal force in either position of the shutter.
I will here state some of the advantages of my improved fastening. It is cheap and durable and easy of application to any win dow blind or shutter, hung with any kind of hinges, and may be applied to either new buildings, or to replace those fastenings now in use; it does not require the window sill or the face of the building-t0 be cut or marred; it is not liable to get out of order, and does not permit the blinds or shutters to get loose and slam in a high wind-it prevents the blinds or shutters from sagging, as it holds up the top of them, and takes off the strain of their weight from the top hinges. The blinds or shutters are easily opened or closed.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The within described blind fastening consisting of the spring C united to the two halves of the blind as set forth for the purpose specified.
