MOLDED PLASTIC BOX Filed July 2, 1962 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 INVENTOR. .Sfl/W/EL B2 U/V United States Patent 3,240,324 MOLDED PLASTIC BOX Samuel Braun, Rye, N.Y., assignor to B.C.N. Design Products Inc., Middle Village, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed July 2, 1962, Ser. No. 206,918 22 Claims. (Cl. 206-16) The present invention relates to a molded plastic box, and it particularly relates to a molded plastic box having a shaver construction.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a molded plastic box having a shaver construction in which the box when closed will form a convenient container for shipment, storage and merchandising of the shaver and which when opened will provide convenient display of the shaver for sales and merchandising purposes.
Another object is to provide a display 'box for an electric shaver which may be readily utilized for the ultimate consumer or user thereof to receive and carry said shaver as well as to render it available for ready usage.
A further object is to provide a container for a cordless shaver which will permit ready charging of the shaver without the necessity of opening the box.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory according to the present invention to provide a box or container structure in which the top or cover portion and the bottom or container portion are provided with a hinge transverse of the bottom wall of the container with the cover portoin including both the top and bottom as well as the sides of the rear portion of the box which will serve as a leg or stand.
Desirably, the hinge construction consists of coil or circular strip metal spring elements which extend across the hinge and are of semi-circular or partial circular shape engaging in slots or notches at each side of the hinge construction.
These springs are so biased as to hold the box either in fully closed position or in fully open position, and they will act as stops to limit the opening movement of the box so that the box when in opened displayed position will have its back cover portion standing substantially upright upon a horizontal support.
The interior of the box and particularly the cover portion which stands upright will normally be lined with a satin cover setting forth the name or trademark of the shaver enclosed while the lower forward section of the base of the box will have a tray with receptacles one of which receives the mirror for shaving purposes and the other of which may receive a transformer to be used in connection with the charging of the cordless shaver.
Desirably these elements are positioned side by side in readily available position, and the mirror receptacle may have a removable upper tray to receive and lock the shaver itself with suitable recesses to prevent loosening or vibration of the device and to hold it firmly in position.
The tray itself may have a forward opening which will coincide with an opening in the front of the box positioned at the location of the plug-in connections so that the shaver may be readily charged by inserting a plug through the front opening without opening the box or container.
The box is provided with a forward latch consisting of a spring leaf member which will press forward an angular 3,240,324 Patented Mar. 15, 1966 catch member to engage the cover with a button projecting to enable convenient unlatching when pressed inward- 1y.
Desirably, the entire box may be molded of polystyrene or other suitable plastic including both the base and cover as well as the tray structures.
The plastic of the external base and cover of the box may be molded so as to have an external grain simulating a cloth or leather structure while the interior tray structure may be molded of white or other light colored plastic materials.

On the interior of the wall in FIG. there will be an inwardly extending ledge 26 for engaging the latch Q as shown in FIG. 11.
The rear portion of the box has the oblique rear walls 27 and 28 on the upper section and 29 on the lower section (see FIG. 3) which terminate in the rearwardly and downwardly projecting contacting ledge 30 which tends to support the box in open position as shown in FIG. 7.
The rear receptacle portion E of the cover of the box 20 has a base wall 31 which extends forwardly to the hinge structure D.
The receptacle portion B will have a straight bottom 32 which extends forwardly to the edge 33 which acts as the forward support when the boX is open as indicated in FIG. 7.
The forward portion of the receptacle B will have the downwardly convergent sides 35 and 36.
The forward portion of the base or container B will have the upwardly inclined wall 34 which terminates in the straight edge portion 37 which carries the latch structure Q.
The latch structure is best shown in detail in FIG. 11 and it consists of two inwardly directed angular members 50 which may be molded with and extend inwardly from the interior face 51 of the front wall 37 of the base and container section B.
The removable latch member 52 itself may be molded of plastic, and it consists of a lower angular member 53 having a rearwardly projecting edge 54 with an upwardly extending portion 55 having a forwardly extending claw 56 (see FIG. 11).
The rearwardly projecting portion 54 will fit over the upper edge 57 of the central portion 58 of the leaf spring having the forwardly inclined ends 59 which lodge in back of and will be held in position by the interior ends 60 of the angular member 50.
The central spring portion 58 will contact and press against the face 61 of the angular member 53 and will tend to force the claw 56 forwardly to engage the ridge or projection 26 (see FIG. 8) which lodges under the central portion 58 to keep the box in closed position.
In this latch arrangement, the only metal elements is the metal leaf spring 58, and it may be replaced by a plastic element lodged inside the angular element 50 on the inside of the base B as shown in FIG. 11.
The hinge structure is best shown in FIG. and consists of two plate elements 75 and 76 having spaced openings 78 and 79 with slots 80 and 81 which receive the C-shaped springs 82.
These C-shaped springs 82 having their inturned ends 83 and 84 turned under the plates 75 and 76, and they will limit the opening of the box as shown in FIGS. 5 and 7 to an angle of 100 to 105.
The inturned ends 83 and 84 are received in the recessed portions 85 and 86 in the interior of the bottom walls 31 and 32 of the plastic structure (see FIG. 10a).
The tray structure is best shown in FIGS. 5, 6, 8 and 9.
The tray structure desirably consists of a thin molded plastic unit with a flat top Wall having the main back wall 96 which extends down to the hinge structure D as shown in FIG. 8.
The tray also has the down-turned side flanges 97 which fit inside of the side walls 35 and the forward flange 98 which fits inside of the front wall 37 to hold the lower tray in position.
The tray G in its lower recessed position will hold the mirror L, and it is provided with side recesses 99 and the curved sides 100 which will support the auxiliary tray M and hold the bottom 101 above the mirror L as indicated in FIG. 8.
The upper tray M will have an outwardly projecting ledge 102 which will fit around the top peripheral portion 103 of the receptacle portion K.
The forward portion of the upper tray M will have a passageway 104 therethrough matching the passageway 105 in the lower tray (see FIG. 5).
These passageways 104 and 105 will match the opening P so that the electrical connection will be made directly through the box when closed in the position shown in FIG. 4 to the shaver N positioned there inside to charge the same.
The upper tray M will receive the shaver body with its curved side walls 106 as shown in FIG. 9 conforming to the curved sides of the shaver and with its rear curved wall 107 and its forward wall 108 also conforming to the base of the shaver so that the shaver will be closely held in position in the tray M against movement or rattling.
The notches 109 will hold projections on the sides of the shaver body so as to aid in procuring it in position.
These recesses 109 as shown in FIGS. 5 .and 8 will also position the top tray M in respect to the bottom tray N by engaging the recess 99 of FIG. 6.
The shaver may be conveniently lifted out of its box by means of the tray M giving access to the mirror L and permitting opening of the box in the position shown in FIGS. 5 and 7 so that it will enable the user to observe his face during the shaving operation.
The other receptacle H has the prong opening 102 (see FIG. 5) which enables the transformer to be located in position as shown in FIG. 5.
The recess 121 as shown in FIG. 6 in the back of the lower tray G enables, the upper tray M to be readily grasped and lifted from its position in the lower tray lifting the shaver body N with it.
The open space 122 as shown in FIG. 9 will protect the mirror L from marring or being scratched by the bottom 101 of the upper tray M.
The interior of the cover as indicated at 123 may be lined with satin or velvet carrying the trademark as a back-drop to the open box as indicated in FIGS. 5 and 7, and the enclosure F may be of cardboard or plastic with the end tabs 124 and 125 (see FIG. 8) to enclose the space E which may contain any desirable accessories out of sight.
The opening 126 in the edge of said structure 125 will enable ready removal thereof from the enclosure B so as to permit access thereto.
It will be particularly noted that the access opening P as shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 will extend upwardly at into the cover A and at 136 into the containerB and will have forwardly projecting walls so as to form a guide for insertion into an electrical conduit connection.
The edges 137 and 138 of the lower portion of the rear of the cover will contact the edges 139 and 140 of the container when the box is closed as indicated at R in FIG. 3.
It is thus apparent that the present applicant has provided a novel mounted plastic box construction for a cordless electrical shaver which will conveniently hold a transformer and the shaver unit itself in removable trays permitting the box to be used both for display and merchandising purposes as well as a carrier and container to be used by the ultimate user or consumer.
The box has a transversely extending hinge across the base thereof so that the cover will include a rear container section to hold the electric cord and other accessories.
This rear container portion will also serve as a leg to support the forward portion of the base in elevated inclined position for display and for usage.
The front of the box will have a through passage or inlet so that the shaver may be charged by the cord without opening the box or removing the shaver body.
The mirror positioned in a recess in the lower tray permits ready use by the purchaser of the shaver without the necessity of going to a washroom or using a mirror apart from the unit.
The through front opening permits charging of the shaver directly in position without removal from the plastic box or without opening of the box.
The C-s-haped springs on the hinge structure is shown in FIG. and will limit the opening of the box to the position shown in FIGS. 5 and 7 for either display or use.
The trays will permit ready handling of the shaver unit and permit it to be elevated from the assembly and removed, and at the same time will hold it firmly when the box is closed. 7
The lining on the interior of the cover is designed to press down on the top faces of the shaver N and the transformer J and also to hold them in position when the plastic box is closed.
The latch arrangement in the front of the box will assure that the box will be kept closed and the fact the front walls and 37 are inclined inwardly will prevent the latch from inadvertently being opened since it will be positioned in the recess between the inwardly directed walls 25 and 37.
The transformer J in its receptacle H will be readily available when needed and may be positioned against looseness by insertion of its prongs.
As many changes could be made in the above molding plastic box, and many widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
