Description

June 28, 1966 WARD 3,258,065
HEAT 0R COLD EMITTING PACK Filed Dec. 9, 1963 I NVEN TOR.
DAVID J. WARD United States Patent 3,258,065 HEAT OR CUlLD EMITTING PACK David .1. Ward, 6109 Waverly St., La Jolla, Calif. Filed Dec. 9, 1963, Ser. No. 328,845 1 Claim. ((31. 165-46) My invention generally relates to a flexible pack for emitting heat or cold to the human body for therapeutic purposes and more particularly to a flexible pack with an electric thermal means on one side and a cold emitting means on the other side.
An object of my invention is to provide a singular device that may be applied to any area of the human body for therapeutic purposes by emitting heat and cold alternately that is of similar low cost design.
These together with other objects and advantages will become apparent as the details of construction and operation is more fully described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a cross sectional view of my invention taken at 11 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective of my device.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the cold producing compartment.
FIGURE 4 shows the closure means sealing the cold producing compartment.
Referring to the drawing there is provided a complete device having an outer container designated by the numeral 111, FIGURE 2.
The electric energy source is represented by cord 11, through control 12, to thermal element 13, cross section FIGURE 1.
Adequate layers of heat or cold insulation material 14, as, for example, plastic foam, asbestos, etc., are provided to separate the cooling material 15, which can be chipped ice or Dry Ice (carbon dioxide crystals) from the heating element 13, so as to provide for simultaneous heating and cooling for alternate application.
The chipped ice, Dry Ice, or other suitable cooling means fill the container in the water proof enclosed cold pack 16, illustrated FIGURE 3, with fastener means 17, FIGURE 4.
The cold pack 16 is inserted into the compartment 18,
FIGURE 1, and is contained therein by the end enclosure means 19 and fastener 20.
It will be apparent that any desired sequence of heat or cold may be applied to any part of the body by inverting the device from one side to the other.
Of course, if only heating or cooling separately is desired, the unneeded side would not be used in the interest of efficiency.
It will be clear that the embodiment of the invention may be used in various ways as well as changed. Such changes will not affect the essence of the invention as described in the annexed claim.
What I claim as new is as follows:
A heat and cold emitting pack comprising:
a first side made from a pliable material for emitting heat therefrom;
heat producing means in physical contact with said first side;
a second side made from a pliable material;
a separable waterproof ice compartment made from a. pliable material adjacent said second side said ice compartment substantially filled with a cooling means; and
insulation means made from a pliable material separating said first and second sides.
