Description

July 5, 1966 E. BANKS FITTED BED SHEET Filed Feb. 12, 1964 INVENTOR Lerho E. Bo n ks ATTORNEY United States Patent O 3,258,789 FITTEI) BED SIRET Letha E. Banks, P20. Box 36, Gainesville, Tex. Filed Feb. 12, 1964, Ser. No. 344,483 1 Claim. (Cl. 5-334) This invention relates to a fitted bed sheet, and it concerns rn-ore particularly a fitted top sheet or spread for application to a bed.
The invention differs from the usual fitted sheet which has shaped corner portions adapted to be draped over corresponding corner portions of a mattress and which may or may not have their extreme peripheral edge portions tucked under the mattress. In p-ractice such a fitted sheet is not suitable for use as the top sheet.
An object of the invention is to provide a fitted top sheet or spread which, when app-lied to a bed, is adapted to secure the covers in place once the bed has been made and to prevent patients and infants alike from pushing the bed clothes off on the floor.
The invention contemplates a fitted top sheet for application to a bed which comprises, in combination with a regular, standard size sheet, the combination of a short, shaped slip cover conformable to an end portion of a mattress which is stitched to the underside of the sheet whereby the sheet is adapted to be secured in place and in use has the appearance of a fitted sheet, while at the same time the adjacent end as well as the sides of the sheet may hang loosely and the opposite end thereof may be turned down in the usual manner in making the bed.
The fitted top sheet of the invention advantageously may be a fancy bedspread, as desired.
The arrangement described not only keeps the top sheet or spread in place, but also keeps in place any other sheets, blankets, quilts, and the like which may be applied to the bed below said top sheet or spread.
The invention will be readily understood by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing a bed having a tted top sheet embodying the invention applied thereto, the sheet being partly broken away to illustrate the manner in which the shaped Slipcover, which is stitched to the underside of the sheet, is receivable on an end portion of a mattress on said bed;
FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional perspective view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2 2 of FIG. 1, showing the underside of the sheet and showing the shaped slip cover which is stitched thereto; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional elevational view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 3 3 of FIG. 1, showing fragmentarily an end portion of the sheet and showing the shaped Slipcover stitched to its underside.
Referring to FIG. 1 of the drawing, the numeral 1 designates generally a bed having a headpiece 2, and having a mattress 3 thereon.
ICC
The numeral 4 indicates generally a tted top sheet embodying the invention, as hereinafter described, which is applied to the bed 1.
The fitted top sheet 4 includes a regular, plain sheet 5 4of standard size corresponding to the dimensions of the mattress 3, and a box-shaped slip cover 6, open at one end, which is Ireceivable on an end portion of the mattress 3.
The slip cover 6 has width and depth dimensions corresponding substantially to those of the mattress 3, and is comparatively short relative t-o its width.
The slip cover 6 has its top portion 7 and its two opposite side portions 8 stitched to the underside of the sheet 5, along the lines 9, 10, respectively, as shown best in FIGS. 2 and 3, whereby the sheet 5 is adapted to be secured in place and in use has the appearance of a fitted sheet, while at the same time the adjacent end 11 as well as the sides 12 of the sheet 5 may hang loosely and the opposite end 13 thereof may be turned down in the usual manner in making the bed, as shown in FIG. l.
The invention may be modified in Various ways without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
I claim:
In a fitted top sheet for application to a bed, the combination of a regular, plain sheet of standard size, corresponding to the dimensions of a mattress with which it is intended to be used, having a box-shaped slip cover, open at one end, secured by stitching t-o its underside, said cover being receivable on an end portion of said mattress and having width and depth dimensions corresponding substantially to those of said mattress, and being comparatively short relative to its width, and said oover having its top portion and its two opposite side portions stitched to the underside of said sheet by a first line of stitching extending across said top portion, immediately adjacent the corresponding end of said mattress, in the applied position of said sheet, and by two other lines of stitching extending horizontally, in parallel relationto each other, across said two opposite side portions of said cover, longitudinally of said mattress and below its top surface, in the applied position of said sheet, whereby said sheet is adapted to be secured in place by engagement of said cover with said end portion of said mattress and in use has the appearance of a fitted sheet, while at the same time the end of said sheet adjacent said cover, as well as the sides thereof, may hang loosely and the opposite end of the sheet may be turned down in the usual manner in making the bed.
